Overgaard, Arizona - How Come?, Ole Overgaard Jan 1981

Overgaard, Arizona - How Come?, Ole Overgaard

The Bridge

Have you ever heard about a little town in Arizona by the name of Overgaard? Probably not. I hadn't, until I suddenly saw the name on a map. I, a Danish journalist from the city of Aalborg, and family were planning a trip to the USA, and we decided to find out how our family name got to Arizona. After seeing the beautiful Grand Canyon, we went along Highway 40 to the city of Holbrook. From there it is only 50 miles to Overgaard. It is a very small town, but with a lot of vacation homes in the big …

Book Review, Egon Bodtker

The Bridge

This short book tells the reader what life was like for one young man in a small village in Denmark in the first two decades of this century. As the author writes in the Foreword: " it is a collection of reminiscences, a mosaic of people and places seen from a long distance, both geographically and chronologically." This sensitive sketch of a childhood and adolescence in the first two decades of the twentieth century will make all readers aware of the monumental changes in the world from then until now. While many of the individual behaviors can be related to …

Civil Pageantry In The Reigns Of Elizabeth I And James I Of England, 1558-1625, Marjorie Ann Watkins Oct 1980

Civil Pageantry In The Reigns Of Elizabeth I And James I Of England, 1558-1625, Marjorie Ann Watkins

History Theses & Dissertations

Spectacle and pageantry played an important role in the monarchies of Elizabeth I and James I of England. Generally pageants served reciprocal purposes. It provided a way to let the realm view the state of the monarch's health and allowed the monarch to impress his subjects with royal grandeur. Additionally, it served as a vehicle for the manifestation of the public's desires concerning the direction which the country might move with the accession of a new monarch. Also, civic pageants provide the historian with an indication of popular like or dislike of a sovereign. In this thesis, a considerable amount …

Urs Schwarz, The Eye Of The Hurricane: Switzerland In World War Two, Heinz K. Meier

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

"Switzerland in World War II" has become a favorite object of investigation and subject of treatment by Swiss journalists, publicists, political scientists and historians. The flood of articles and monographs on every conceivable aspect of that topic has become so overwhelming as to make it almost impossible for one person to keep track of it, let alone read and digest it. And yet, according to Urs Schwarz, ther is a gap in this outpouring of hsitorical literature: There are no English language accounts on the role of neutral Switzerland in World War II. His Book The eye of the Hurricane …

Jacob Burckhardt, The Historian, As Analyst Of His Age, Walter L. Mullen

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

Often the historian is faced with the question of how the study of the past relates to the present. Even when Leopold von Ranke's admonition is followed, and we try to tell history "as it essentially was" and eliminate subjectivity, purely personal opinions are difficult to keep out of formal academic work. Even when objectivity is attempted, the historian will have personal convictions about the object of his study in relation to his own existence.

The Irish Land Question 1848-1870, Sara A. Coski Oct 1980

The Irish Land Question 1848-1870, Sara A. Coski

History Theses & Dissertations

This is a study of the Irish Land Question and the evolution of British policy aimed at solving it. In 1848 Parliament proposed legislation strictly in keeping with current ideas of laissez-faire, yet by 1870 they passed an act which totally reversed this policy.

This change in British policy was due to the combination of two forces. First the progressive ideas of Liberal Prime Minister, William E. Gladstone, and second, the violent Fenian atrocities that made the British more receptive to radical ideas. The Irish Land Act of 1870 represented a turning point in British policy toward Ireland as …

Tracing Your Swiss Roots. By Maralyn A. Wellauer., Sandra H. Luebking

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

These three works offer a pleasantly optimistic view of Swiss research. The disadvantages of not one, but four, national languages, (German, French, Italian , and Romansh), and a lack of federal census schedules or military pension files are more than offset by the availability of records relatively untouched by war, political instability, or extensive civil boundary changes. Particularly reassuring is Mr. Nielson's observation that, with few exceptions, one can trace his lineage in Switzerland to about the time of the Reformation. However, success is not synonymous with simplicity. All three authors stress the inability of one publica tion to deal …

Purrysburg, An Archaeological Survey, Larry Lepionka

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

An archaeological reconnaissance of the colonial site of Purrysburg, on the Savannah River in Jasper County, South Carolina, has been conducted intermittently through the year 1979, with the goal of locating structural or other artifactual remains of the original Swiss settlement established here in 1733. Work was restricted to a surface search with only limited subsurface testing. Brick outcroppings occurred at various locations but their date could not be ascertained without extensive excavation. Artifact scatters including datable ceramics were common and suggest a peak in occupation between 1790 and 1820, well after the initial Swiss settlement. Early and middle 18th …

Swiss Food And Foodways In Early Pennsylvania, William Woys Weaver

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

When the immigrants from Basel composed this song about corning to Pennsylvania in 1803, I do not think they realized --in spite of their enthusiasrn--what a very strange mixture of things they would find there a century and a half ago. Certainly, this was a major area of Swiss settlernent and in spite of the pressures of acculturation, there were many foods that the 1803 settlers would recognize from their homeland.

Karl Luond, Schweizer In Amerika., Bruno Gujer

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

As a Swiss in America one is particularly sensitive about what is written in Switzerland about America and Swiss immigrants here. Karl Luond's Schweizer in Amerika is a welcome though flawed introduction to thegreat saga of Swiss immigration to this country. Welcome, because Luond covers the most important names and places, and gives insight into the great diversity among the men and women who attempted a new beginning across the Atlantic. One marvels at the achievement of a Gallatin, Ammann or Zwick, at the wealth of a Guggenheim or Frick, at the hardships of the pioneer settlers.

Robert H. Billigmeier, A Crisis In Swiss Pluralism, Leo Schelbert

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

The author, Professor of Sociology at the University of California at Santa Barbara, presents a study that is clearly a labor of love, an analytical tour de force, and a toughminded professional diagnosis. It is devoted to the Swiss segment of the once large community of Romansh speakers who resided in the Alpine regions between Italy and Northern Europe. The remnant occupies today a similar position as the Basques in Spain and France, the Flemish in Belgium, or the Lapps in the northern borderlands who are also encircled by more numerous and powerful linguistic groups. Professor Billigmeier views the Romansh, …

Ethnicity On The Great Plains: Preface & Introduction, Frederick C. Luebke Jan 1980

Ethnicity On The Great Plains: Preface & Introduction, Frederick C. Luebke

Department of History: Faculty Publications

Immigrants from Europe formed a major element in the population that settled the Great Plains in the nineteenth century; their descendants constitute the majority of persons in many parts of the region today. A century ago, as the agricultural frontier moved across central Nebraska onto what is considered the Great Plains, foreignborn persons consistently formed a much larger proportion of the inhabitants on the western edge of settlement than they did in the state as a whole. Some years later the census of 1890 revealed that in North Dakota, for example, 42.7 percent of the population of that newly admitted …

American Diplomats And The Franco-Prussian War: Perceptions From Paris And Berlin, M. Patricia Dougherty

Faculty Authored Books and Book Contributions

In July 1870, war between Prussia and France erupted over the candida ture of a German prince to the Spanish throne, with far-reaching con sequences for the balance of power in Europe. Six weeks later, the German army decisively defeated the French at Sedan and captured the French emperor. Napoleon III. Although this victory precipitated the collapse of the Second French Empire, it did not end the war. Only after a four-month siege of Paris did the French surrender to the Germans on January 28, 1871. Between this date and the signing of the peace treaty at Frankfurt on May …

British Reaction To German Foreign Policy, January 1933 To June 1936, Nigel J. Cox

Masters Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to discuss the foreign policy inter-action between Britain and Germany from January, 1933 to June, 1936, and to analyse British action, reaction and aims in foreign policy during that time.

In Chapter I, I deal with three broad ideas by way of introduction. First, there is an analysis of those groups which are acting and reacting in the sphere of foreign policy. There are four groups enumerated: the governmental or official group; the parliamentary group; the press; and, finally, public opinion. The make-up of these groups, the sources for discovering their reactions, and the …

Early Christmas At Emmanual Church, Bertha Louise Goetsch

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

I am of Swiss ancestry on both sides of the family. My paternal Grandfather Andreas Schifferly, b. 1811, was from Kt. Aargau. My mother was a Stalder from Lutzelfluh, b. 1851, and baptized by the eminent Jeremias Gotthelf, who was also a dear fried of the Stalder family, as well as their pastor. His novels were so much enjoyed by this family, and they carried them to the USA when they left Switzerland for Ohio, in 1853.
