Ii. The Meeting Of The Swiss American Historical Society In Bern, Lukas Burckhardt

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

On June 18, 1983, more than forty persons from the United States and Switzerland met for the whole day at the Restaurant zur Aeusseren Enge in Bern. The friendly atmosphere of that cosy establishment in the homely style of the Swiss National Exhibition of 1914, which had taken place in its neighbourhood, was greatly enhanced by a good lunch. The meeting was well attended, even though many members had sent their regrets. Among those present, we may mention Professor Max Silberschmidt, the former SAHS presidents Heinz K. Meier and Augustin Maissen, the director of the Foundation Pro Helvetia, Luc Boissonnas, …

Sylva Brunner, a well-known member of the Swiss colony of New York, is the author of a book (written in German) which was published in September of this year by the Peter Meili Verlag in Schaffhausen, Switzerland. "Pionier für eine menschlichere Zukunft" is a documentary presentation of the life of Dr. med. Wilhelm Joos (1821-1900) who represented his native Schaffhausen in the Swiss National Council (Nationalrat) from 1863 to 1900, and who was one of the most colorful and controversial members of that body. Joos was the champion of the "little man," and his name is above all connected with …

Although not a recent publication, this rare and little known work deserves to be featured. Some time ago the Arthur H. Clark Company offered Number 18 of the 200 printed copies for sale; the little book is beautifully crafted, signed by the printer J. Wilson McKenney, and reproduces on the front cover a letter in facsimile that was written by Borel on Tuesday, April 24, 1906, right after the devastating earthquake. The work contains a photograph of Antoine Borel, Jr. (1879-1958), an elevenpage, carefully annotated introduction, six letters of Borel to his parents who were at that time in Europe, …

Iii. Strangers Settling A Wild Land: Mari Sandoz' Writings About Swiss Settlers In Nebraska, Marianne Burkhard

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

On my first trip West, from the corn plains of Illinois to California and back, Nebraska was the first state with a physiognomy really distinct from the green fields I had come to know. Although there were many spectacular landscapes to be admired during the trip, the grassy hills of Western Nebraska, round and treeless, stayed in my memory. So did the sunflowers, lining the roads and swaying gently in the grass. Little did I know then that, years later, this rather bare, monotonous country would hold my imagination through literary works of women, Willa Cather and Mari Sandoz. With …

This edition of the religio-political writings of Johann Joachim Zublin (1724-1781) is a valuable and welcome addition to Swiss Americana. John J. Zubly, as he came to be known in the American colonies, had grown up in St. Gallen, Switzerland, where he studied for the ministry. He was ordained in the German Reformed Church of London in 1744 and then moved to South Carolina. His writings which were published after 1760 touch upon vital questions of the years 1760 to 1780, years that saw the transformation of the thirteen continental North American British colonies into a nascent league of states …

What were the social mechanisms of emigration to the United States? What made people leave or remain behind? What did they encounter en route and upon their arrival? What effects did their exodus and the money they were able to send back have at home? What was the fabric of traditional artisan and peasant life? What was the interplay between it and the far from homogeneous culture of the United States? What were the effects of the Ticino on California and vice versa? This collection of letters written by and to Italian-Swiss emigrants from the Ticino presents us with the …

In the November 1982 issue of the SAHS Newsletter {XVIII, 3, 26-29) Professor Leo Schelbert wrote a detailed review of my book Hawai'i und die deutschsprachigen Völker (Bern: Peter Lang 1982). While I found myself in agreement with him on most issues, there are two points in his critique which merit a closer look, however.

Research Note: Toleration And Persecution: The Jewish Community Of Medieval Regensburg, Donald L. Keay Oct 1983

Research Note: Toleration And Persecution: The Jewish Community Of Medieval Regensburg, Donald L. Keay

Bridgewater Review

It is often assumed that European Jews of the Middle Ages were a small minority constantly harassed and persecuted by a bigoted Christian population determined to annihilate them. Had such a situation existed, the Christians surely would have succeeded. A truer picture, however, is one of long periods of peace and prosperity as Jews lived side by side with their Christian neighbors, both benefiting from social and economic relations.

General Karl N. Haushofer And Geopolitik, David P. Benorden

Department of Geography: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The purpose of this research is to trace the mainstream of German and related geopolitical philosophy and the various aspects that influenced the philosophy from 1800 to 1945. Two themes evolved: Political Geography and Nationalism. Along with economic considerations, these themes were fused into Geopolitik by Karl Haushofer and his followers in Germany following the end of World War I.

The goal of this work is to trace Geopolitik to discover the significance of its implications, what was behind it, and what were its real objectives. Geopolitik is a German-developed "science'' based on doctrines and practices with its origins in …

The Rhetorical Factors Applied To The Reorientation Of American Public Opinion Toward The Soviet Union Immediately After June 22, 1941, Stanley Paul Berry

History Theses & Dissertations

This thesis asks the question: what rhetorical factors were applied to the reorientation of American public opinion toward the Soviet Union immediately after June 22, 1941. A brief review of American diplomatic trends leading to June 22, 1941 is provided. The term rhetoric is operationally defined and the limits establishing causation between persuasion and opinion are delineated. The national communication process is explained and a national opinion profile, as it existed in the spring of 1941, is described. Initial persuasive responses to the Russo-German war are addressed and analyzed. The primary persuasive goals are identified as improving the public's image …

A Prelude To Conflict: The German Ethnic Group In Brazilian Society, 1890-1917, Frederick C. Luebke

Department of History: Faculty Publications

The anti-German riots in Brazil in 1917 are better understood within a larger context of ethnic history: the behavior of the dominant Luso-Brazilians (persons of Portuguese language and culture) and the minority TeutoBrazilians (as the Germans were often called) may be best interpreted if examined historically in terms of ethnic group relations, perceptions, and images.

Because of the accidents of time and place, the Germans in Brazil had been allowed to develop their own society without much interference. By the 1880s, the last years of the Brazilian Empire, they had become a society within a society - a large, diverse, …
