Jens Munk: The Story Of A Sailor Who Embraced His Fate, Inga W. Wiehl Jan 1985

Jens Munk: The Story Of A Sailor Who Embraced His Fate, Inga W. Wiehl

The Bridge

"Jens Munk was one of the intrepid sixteenth-century explorers who navigated the Arctic seas with inadequate ships, faulty charts and primitive instruments. He was also one of the few who survived the arduous search for the Northwest Passage, who reached Hudson Bay in 1619, wintered there, buried most of his crew, and by a supreme effort of will and skill made the voyage home with the two crewmen left to him. "

The Jens Nyholm Papers, William K. Beatty Jan 1985

The Jens Nyholm Papers, William K. Beatty

The Bridge

The Chicago area has benefited from the careers of two Danes who had the same first name but completely different occupations: the one indoors and the other out. Both men were alike in having achieved national reputations in their chosen fields. Jens Nyholm served for 24 years as a university librarian; Jens Jensen devoted many years to working with nature in the designing of private and public landscapes in the Midwest. Northwestern University has enjoyed, and still enjoys, the fruits of the labors of both these men for it was at this institution that Nyholm devoted over two decades of …

The Plow, The Cow And The Pastor, Karl Marg Jan 1985

The Plow, The Cow And The Pastor, Karl Marg

The Bridge

That was not so bad, and then, Dagmar was even a queen. I have done that which is worse. I once stole, on a late winter night in Chicago, a pioneer cow with all accessories from Christian Bay. Then I sold the stolen goods to a newspaper in Denmark and got c. 60 kroner out of it. How my conscience has fared since then I will not here relate. I am a Danish Lutheran and I do not confess in a catholic confession booth, and much less would I confess in the modern protestant manner, publicly to Mrs. Somebody in …

Ii. My Life, Maurice E. Perret

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

In a high valley of the Jura Mountains, La Chaux-de-Fonds, Canton of Neuchatel, is the center of watchmaking. It is the city where I was born, 19 May 1911. My passion for travel, geography, history, railroads, maps, is inherited. Among the family papers on my father's side I found a little yellow book titled "Expenses during the travel in Italy" and dated 1799. It contains the schedule of the stagecoaches between cities in Italy and among the expenses are purchases of one map of the Cisalpine Republic, another map and the History of Rome by the Latin historian Polybius. My …

Iv. Maurice E. Perret's Les Colonies Tessinoises: A Summary View, H. F. Raup

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

Recently a major contribution to the field of knowledge of California's diverse population was published in Switzerland by Dr. Maurice-Edmond Perret, with the title Les Colonies Tessinoises en Californie.1 Unlike most studies of a similar nature, Perret had access to source materials in the Swiss archives as well as to those in California libraries.2 But he went further: he conducted his study by means of actual field investigation both in Switzerland and in California, and it is this which gives his work particular interest to historical geographers.

I.G. Farben's Petro-Chemical Plant And Concentration Camp At Auschwitz, Robert Simon Yavner Jul 1984

I.G. Farben's Petro-Chemical Plant And Concentration Camp At Auschwitz, Robert Simon Yavner

History Theses & Dissertations

This study examines the history of the petrochemical plant and concentration camp run by I.G. Farbenindustrie (the dominant German chemical company during World War II) at Auschwitz to decide upon the degree of Farben’s involvement with Hitler and the Holocaust. The study traces the construction of the plant to determine Farben's participation at Auschwitz. The main sources consulted were the transcripts of the postwar Farben trial at Nuremberg along with eyewitness accounts of members of the prosecution staff. Based on the court's verdict, one might conclude that I.G. Farben operated in a state of coercion during the war and could …

Nineteenth Century English Choral Music, Ann Boley Parker Jul 1984

Nineteenth Century English Choral Music, Ann Boley Parker

Institute for the Humanities Theses

English music history in the nineteenth century illuminates the larger society of which it was part. Music had lost nearly all of its importance to the English people in the early nineteenth century. This was drastically changed when the sight-singing movement took hold in the early 184Os. It spread rapidly and became a social influence as well as a musical one. People gathered together to learn to read music and then formed choirs in order to perform. Singing societies were organized to serve a variety of purposes, from providing religious outlets to convivial evenings. The societies often bridged wide gaps …

The Puritans' Use Of Scripture In The Development Of An Apocalyptic Hermeneutic, Edward Hindson Apr 1984

The Puritans' Use Of Scripture In The Development Of An Apocalyptic Hermeneutic, Edward Hindson

Faculty Dissertations

The study of the apocalyptical phenomenon in biblical prophecy is an area of current investigation in biblical studies. The present dissertation utilizes the sociology of knowledge to investigate the socio-economic-religio-political milieu of the English Puritans in their development of an apocalyptical hermeneutic.

Medieval and Reformation backgrounds to the Puritan apocalyptic are traced from Wycliffe through Luther, Calvin, Knox, Bale, Bullinger and Foxe. The historic Protestant apocalyptic tradition was then adopted by the Marian exiles at Geneva and popularized through the extensive annotations of the various editions of the Geneva Bible. To these were added the speculations of such scholars as …

Iv. Intelligence Operations In Switzerland During The Second World War, Heinz K. Meier

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

The topic of my paper is involved and multifaceted. It deals with well-known organizations and names such as the Rote Kapelle, Dulles and the OSS, Schellenberg, and the Abwehr, but it concentrates on the role that Switzerland played in the field of intelligence during World War II. Due to the volume of materials on almost every aspect of my topic it will not be possible to present more than an overview of the main themes and a glimpse at the issues that have challenged historians over the last forty years.

Iii. Swiss Industrialization: Its Social Dimensions, Jürg K. Siegenthaler

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

Under this heading I would like to bring together two different emphases in the study of industrialization that too often have remained separate: (a) the historical measurement of economic growth, undertaken by economic historians who have looked at industrial output and similar indicators in order to gauge a country's economic performance; and (b) the study of social policy measures such as workers' protection and social insurance, to which social and political historians have paid major attention in assessing a nation's reaction to the ups and downs of economic growth in the course of industrialization.

In the past year, the SAHS has carried out a number of activities. The constant, and a mainstay, is the Newsletter edited by Professors Leo Schelbert and Heinz K. Meier. I would like to thank both of them for all their painstaking work they devote to this publication that is the vital link for the members of our society.
