The Heritage Of Niels Bohr, Russell J. Donnelly Jan 1986

The Heritage Of Niels Bohr, Russell J. Donnelly

The Bridge

Danish Americans, as publications in The Bridge attest, look back on their ancestral home with a wide variety of feelings. For a professional physicist Denmark is a legendary name, for in Copenhagen in the early twentieth century, there emerged in a remarkable way one of the greatest revolutions in human thought, the invention of quantum mechanics. Quantum mechanics has had an enormous influence in physics and on the world, for in that brief period of time things were understood which had always evaded explanation: such as the structure and radiation of atoms and molecules, the behavior of metals, and the …

Book Review: Conflict And Compromise In Multilingual Societies, Heinz K. Meier Nov 1985

Book Review: Conflict And Compromise In Multilingual Societies, Heinz K. Meier

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

Kenneth D. McRae, professor of political science at Carleton University, Ottawa, Canada, has spent much of his academic career studying Swiss multilingualism and multiculturalism. In the course of his endeavors he has become an expert on the topic, as is reflected in the books and articles he has published on it, best known among them Switzerland: Example of Cultural Coexistence (1964). Since Canada is itself a linguistically and culturally divided country, Dr. McRae's work on Switzerland assumed a wider significance, inasmuch as it lent itself as a basis for comparison and, perhaps, instruction, especially in his function as a research …

Prefatory Note, Leo Schelbert, Heinz K. Meier

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

"Grandmother Joss consented, one evening in 1943, to tell me the story of her earlier years," explains her granddaughter Ruth Harbecke Jewett in the Preface to The Swiss Connection, The Lives and Times of Frederick Joss and Emily Bigler Joss and Their Descendants. (Chicago: Privately printed, 1983), 116 pp. Over forty years ago Ms. Jewett had taken copious notes of those conversations, but then forgotten them; when she rediscovered her notes some years ago, Ms. Jewett decided to use them as the core for a loving portrait of six generations of the Joss-Bigler family. Ms. Jewett has given gracious permission …

French History Textbooks As A Tool For Teaching Civilization, Thomas M. Carr Jr. Oct 1985

French History Textbooks As A Tool For Teaching Civilization, Thomas M. Carr Jr.

French Language and Literature Papers

The recent controversy in France over the new history textbooks based on the reforms promulgated under René Haby in the middle 1970s can serve as a reminder of the many uses such textbooks can have in our civilization classes. In the past ten years the Haby programs have become the symbol for what many observers in France take to be a serious weakening of the teaching of history since the late 1960s. At the primary level, history was joined to geography and the sciences as an activité d'éveil; no longer was it the privileged instrument for fostering national identity as …

Portrait Of The Scientific Journals In Germany: 1930-1936, Paul Eugene Gesling Jr. Oct 1985

Portrait Of The Scientific Journals In Germany: 1930-1936, Paul Eugene Gesling Jr.

Institute for the Humanities Theses

The focus of this .study is to note and measure any discernible changes within the character of scientific publications in Germany after the elevation of the National Socialists to power. To detect any such changes, a classification scheme was established to categorize formal papers appearing in six journals between 1930-1936. The results are subject to variance as the journals examined did not fare identically. Certain journals declined in output while others prospered. Suggestion~ of ideological tampering remain largely absent. Indeed, the wide latitude of interests expressed by these papers suggest a preference on the part of German scientists and editors …

The American-British Alliance Of World War Ii And The Debate Over European Strategy, Emory Allen Burton Jul 1985

The American-British Alliance Of World War Ii And The Debate Over European Strategy, Emory Allen Burton

History Theses & Dissertations

The American-British Alliance of World Mar II did not evolve by chance but was the result of deliberate steps wh1ch can be traced back to 1938 when naval coordination talks were conducted in London. These talks emerged from an American evaluation of defense commitments in the Pacific and recognition that British cooperation would be valued in a future war.

The theme of this study is the development of the alliance and how that process was influenced by the debate over the strategy for the war in Europe. The most important decision in this process was the Europe first policy. Roosevelt …

Tradition And Individualism: Hans Banziger's Books On Swiss And German Literature, Marianne Burkhard

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

Over the years, I have seen Hans Banziger here and there, on both sides of the Atlantic. His slender figure would appear in the midst of people crowding lecture rooms at meetings of the Modern Language Association in New York or Chicago, his smile would suddenly greet me, in the summer, at the library in Zurich, and whenever possible he would attend the annual meeting of the Swiss American Historical Society, an intent listener often adding thoughtful comments or questions. Rather short in stature, his grey hair closely cropped, he has always been, for me, an example of the "Swiss" …

My Life, Hans Banziger

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

One of my very young students having gotten once the task to write on his short lifetime introduced his witty essay with the remark that curricula vitae reminded him always of necrologies. He went on, using the fiction of a minister's sermon, to describe his career: "A promising young life came abruptly to an end; Karl X had wanted to become a teacher, but his grades were not good enough ... ". Thus, you might understand, why I myself hesitated a little when Marianne Burkhard asked me to write about my life. Memoirs always sound a little bit sad. But …

Here And There - Remarks On Daily Life, Hans Banziger, Marianne Burkhard

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

Banziger's book College-Erinnerungen is a collection of short pieces written between 1967 and 1979 and published first in the periodical Schweizer Monatshefte. Here he describes and comments on a wide variety of phenomena he encountered in his daily life at Bryn Mawr. There are notes about nature and academic procedures, about political events and difficulties with language, about schools and churches. The thread connecting all these details of the old and the new country is a keen interest in human behavior and its inherent attitudes as well as the attempt to show that reality will always surpass our images and …

Curtain Of Silence Japanese In Soviet Custody, 1945-1956, William F. Nimmo May 1985

Curtain Of Silence Japanese In Soviet Custody, 1945-1956, William F. Nimmo

Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations

The Soviet Union attacked- and defeated Japanese forces in Northeast Asia in the final days of the Second World War, and 2,100,000 Japanese soldiers and civilians suddenly fell into the hands of the Red Army. This thesis examines the experiences of Japanese in Soviet custody, efforts to obtain their release, and their eventual return to Japan. Repatriation of civilians from Soviet-controlled areas was slow, and military personnel were taken to the USSR for use as forced labor for several years. The Soviets conducted an intensive Marxist-Leninist indoctrination program for prisoners of war, and a professed acceptance of communism was a …

The First Wandering Preachers, Laura Mellinger Feb 1985

The First Wandering Preachers, Laura Mellinger

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis attempts to trace the origins of the wandering preachers who appeared around 1100 in Europe. These were men who took it upon themselves to wander through towns am countryside, preaching a variety of messages wherever they from an audience. They are of interest in prefiguring St Francis' style, and in exemplifying the ramification of voluntary poverty styles which formed their context. They are also important for their central role in various movements of popular piety.

Book Review: The Essence Of Swissness: A Special Issue Of The Times Literary Supplement, Leo Schelbert

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

The Friday, December 7, 1984, issue of the London Times Literary Supplement was devoted in good part to works about Switzerland and its unique literary and historical traditions. It opens with a challenging essay by George Steiner who raises the question "What is Swiss?" "The Writer may speak against the grain," he cautions, "even when he bears close witness. Ten years are, as I have found, too short a time in which to get to know the palimpsest of Genevan society, let alone those of Switzerland." Yet he offers courageously and with much insight his "impressions as to the nature …

Book Review: Des Suisses Pas Comme Les Autres Et Au Bout De La Terre, Marianne Burkhard Feb 1985

Book Review: Des Suisses Pas Comme Les Autres Et Au Bout De La Terre, Marianne Burkhard

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

For several months, five French-Swiss journalists travelled in other continents to meet and interview Swiss emigrants, to see how they lived and to explore their views on Switzerland and their emigration. Deliberately, the reporters chose countries far away from Europe, i.e. the United States, the Republic of South Africa, Singapore, Brazil, Argentina, and Australia. As their enterprise was not designed to be either scholarly or encyclopedic, the authors interweave impressions and information, historical facts and personal anecdotes. The result is a book that is fascinating to read as it offers vivid descriptions of places "au bout de la terre" and …

Swiss Mercenaries In The Service Of The British Crown: The War Of 1812, Ivor C.E. Luethy Feb 1985

Swiss Mercenaries In The Service Of The British Crown: The War Of 1812, Ivor C.E. Luethy

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

During the War of 1812, Swiss mercenaries were part of the British army which fought against the American forces. The most important figure among these soldiers in the service of the British Crown was undoubtedly Sir George Prevost, Governor-General and military commander of British North America from 1811-1815. He was a descendant of a prominent Geneva family, several members of which had attained high ranks in the British forces; Augustin Prevost, for example, Sir George's father became Major-General under General Wolfe. Augustin Prevost had also been a friend of Frederick Haldimand, Governor-General of Canada during the American Revolution.

Book Review: One Small Lifetime, Leo Schelbert Feb 1985

Book Review: One Small Lifetime, Leo Schelbert

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

To do justice to this moving memoir is less than easy. It presents the story of two intertwined lives, that of Amalia Thurkauf-Braun who was born in the 1880s and that of her son Ernst Albert, born in 1907 at Liestal, the capital of Canton Basel-Land, in Switzerland. The lives of Ernst's father Emil Thurkauf, in contrast, and of Ernst 's three siblings come only occasionally into view from the perspective of Amalia Thurkauf's reports or of her son's autobiographical reminiscences. Both records are touching documents that tell of unusual endurance, of sincere faith, and of incredible capacity for work. …
