The American Indian Museum Of The City Of Zurich, Or: From The Everyday Life Of Two Museum Curators, Hans Lang Nov 1986

The American Indian Museum Of The City Of Zurich, Or: From The Everyday Life Of Two Museum Curators, Hans Lang

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

Since his retirement from the Ethnological Museum of the University of Zurich in 1984, Hans Lang has devoted all his time to the American Indian Museum of the City of Zurich, the only such institution in Western Europe. It grew out of the initiative and the tireless collecting efforts of Gottfried and Martha Hotz. Already in his early youth, reading had awakened in G. Hotz a lively interest in the indigenous peoples of North America. When he was only sixteen, he purchased the first item, a simple knife, for his today widely known collection. Later he invested every penny he …

On The Trail Of Swiss Painters Among American Indians, Hans Lang

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

The discovery of America by Europeans opened a new field of interest for numerous European artists occupying themselves with the new continent and its native population. Some even set out with pencil and paint brush to portray on the spot that queer and picturesque world, not the least outstanding of them being Swiss.

Der Lndianer In Der Europaischen Musik - Ausgewahlte Beispiele, Hans Lang

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

The great event of the discovery of the New World with its strange, exotic peoples was reflected not only in European literature and art, but also in all areas of music. Especially in the field of music, there are still a number of unexplained phenomena in this context, such as the chaconne, which appeared in Spain soon after the discovery of America. In 1517, the Spanish poet Torres Naharro first mentioned the "chacona" as a peasant dance song. We still don't know how this dance developed or where it came from, but even then, its possible American (Mexican) origins were …

The Unusual American Career Of The Swiss Politician Emily Frey (1838-1922), Hans R. Guggisberg Jun 1986

The Unusual American Career Of The Swiss Politician Emily Frey (1838-1922), Hans R. Guggisberg

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

The title of this paper may arouse the expectation that we will concern ourselves mainly with a number of adventurous anecdotes from the biography of a prominent Swiss politician of the late 19th and early 20th century. I do not want to disappoint such expectations altogether. I shall indeed relate several episodes from Emil Frey's life which appear to be worth relating because they are not only quite unusual but - at least to my knowledge - also very little known. Frey's biography is linked to the history of Switzerland and Basel on the one hand, and quite particularly to …

Shakespeare's Henry V And The Alexandrian Allusion, Winona Howe Jun 1986

Shakespeare's Henry V And The Alexandrian Allusion, Winona Howe

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The character of Henry V (in Shakespeare's play of the same name) has been a matter of debate among critics, some of whom accept the historical view of Henry as an extraordinarily able and heroic king, while others view him as an extremely unattractive personality, a spiritual hypocrite, and a conqueror of unmitigated cruelty. Cited as supporting evidence for this unflattering portrait is a passage in Act IV which consists of a conversation between two characters, Gower and Fluellen. In this conversation, Henry is compared to Alexander the Great or "the Pig" as Fluellen terms him.

Two critics, Ronald Berman …

Letter From The Editors, Leo Schelbert, Heinz Meier

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

The second newsletter of this year consists of a substantial scholarly article on the American career of the Basel politician Emil Frey by our esteemed advisory board member Hans R. Guggisberg, professor of history at the University of Basel. The article was originally presented as a paper at the 1984 annual meeting of our society in Philadelphia. Professor Guggisberg revised the paper for publication here and in Switzerland. A somewhat shorter version will appear as a commentary in the forthcoming publication of our society with the translation of the letters which Frey wrote when he lived in this country during …

Book Review: Robert Walser Rediscovered: Stories, Fairy-Tale Plays, And Critical Responses, Marianne Burkhard

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

Swiss author Robert Walser (1878-1956) was almost forgotten when he died on a Christmas day after having spent over 20 years in the asylum of Herisau refusing all invitations to continue writing. Yet at the beginning of the century he was well known for his poems (1909), his novels (Geschwister Tanner 1906; Der Gehiilfe 1907; Jakob von Gunten 1908), and his numerous short prose pieces published first in newspapers and magazines, then as collections (Fritz Kochers Aufsatze 1904; Kleine Dichtungen 1914; Poetenleben 1917; Die Rose 1925). In the 1960's and 1970's he was rediscovered in Switzerland and Germany; two editions …

Book Review: Konflikte Der Industrialisierung: Industrie, Raum Und Gesellschaft In Glarus Und Scranton 1840-1914, Heinz K. Meier

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

The process of the industrialization of a previously agrarian region is not easy to analyze and evaluate since it is made up of and touches upon qualitative as well as quantitative factors of a considerable variety and complexity. Jurg K. Siegenthaler in his monograph Konflikte der Industrialisierung attempts to provide such an analysis on the basis of a historical-comparative study of two distinct cases of 19th century industrialization, Glarus, a small mountain canton of Switzerland, and Scranton, a city in the Lackawanna valley of northeastern Pennsylvania. The issues raised are significant inasmuch as industrialization is still the prefered precept for …

The Polish Resistance Movement In Second World War, Chester M. Nowak Apr 1986

The Polish Resistance Movement In Second World War, Chester M. Nowak

Bridgewater Review

The European Resistance Movement provides us with one of the more engaging and captivating stories of the Second World War, and the Polish Resistance Movement has a central place in that story. Yet, the history and the struggles of the Polish Resistance are not well known. Few people are aware, therefore, of the Polish Underground’s reports about the German extermination of Jews and about German preparations for the invasion of the Soviet Union; the penetration of the German rocket center at Peenemunde by Polish agents, or the fact that Poles delivered into Allied hands the plans and actual parts of …

The Troubadour Poets: Their Influence On Their Times, Georgia M. Jarrell Apr 1986

The Troubadour Poets: Their Influence On Their Times, Georgia M. Jarrell

Institute for the Humanities Theses

Troubadour poetry was a phenomenon which occurred in the South of France during the eleventh through the thirteenth centuries. The style was one of political and social invectives and panegyrics, as well as a sophisticated love poetry. The tradition flourished and then died with direct relations to the political and religious events of the era. Through this poetry, the modern reader can not only understand the feelings of the individual poets but also gain insights on the lifestyles of the period and the events which had a bearing on the history of the period. The troubadours were truly mirrors of …

Swiss Related Place Names In The Usa, Erdmann Schmocker, Kim-Chau Nguyen

The following pages are excerpts of an extensive project in progress . It all started many years ago when I first became aware of the existence of a few locations in the USA named Bern (Bern, Idaho; Berne, Indiana; New Bern, North Carolina) . This quickly awakened a chauvinistic interest in me asking: "I wonder how many really exist?" (My hometown is Bern, Switzerland) . A cursory look in an atlas produced 17. With the addition of more detailed atlas information, bits and pieces of cross information, chance remarks, etc. (i.e from a collector of postal cancels) the list rather …

President's Report, Marianne Burkhard

The past year was marked by a steady continuance of activities started earlier. Perhaps the most significant step was the signing of a contract with Peter Lang Publishers in New York, a subsidiary of the well-known publishing house in Bern, for the volume of the Emil Frey Letters. This book is now in print and should be on the market early next year. As in earlier, similar ventures, SAHS members will receive a free copy; Lang will market the book, especially to libraries and people interested in Swiss-American history. The second installment of our PRO HELVETIA publication subsidy will cover …

Berniana Americana - Oder Heimatsammlung Einmal Anders, Erdmann Schmocker Feb 1986

Berniana Americana - Oder Heimatsammlung Einmal Anders, Erdmann Schmocker

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

In 1710, approximately 250 emigrants from the state of Bern, under the leadership of Junker Christoph von Graffenried, settled in North Carolina. They called their settlement Neubern, and thus the name of the state of Bern was probably first brought to the New World. This first Bernese settlement did not develop favorably; many of the immigrants died, and the rest were largely resettled more or less forcibly. Only a few former Swiss people still live in the area today. Nevertheless, the name of the town remained unchanged until the present day.
