Swiss American Historical Society Review

The idea of identity with Europe is central to the studies of the cities in the two volumes under review. As Carl Schorske suggests in his introduction to Geneva, Zurich, Basel: while Switzerland voted against European unity, these three cities, despite diverse but strong local identities, endorsed the unity concept when a referendum was undertaken in 1992. In a similar vein, James Cracraft, in an essay which surveys the historical background of Peter the Great' s rationale for the building of St. Petersburg in the eighteenth century, is hopeful that the city, reclaiming its original name after the demise of …

On January 12, 1996, Hans Rudolf Guggisberg, professor emeritus of the University of Basel, died unexpectedly of a heart attack. On December 15, 1995, he had given his farewell lecture at the University in which he defined himself as a "student of history," as someone for whom personal as well as professional life was as much a process of continued learning as it was of teaching. He had specialized in the history of tolerance in the sixteenth century, especially as promoted by the theologian Sebastian Castellio (1515-1563) who had joined John Calvin at Strasbourg and Geneva; after theological disagreements with …

Throughout the period between the two world wars, Great Britain and the United States were embroiled in an imperialistic rivalry focused heavily in East Asia. The strong sense of competition and mistrust between the navies of the two nations hindered the development of close cooperation as war became imminent in the late 1930s. This state of affairs encompassed every aspect of naval operations, including signal intelligence whose officials sought to forge a working relationship beneficial to both countries in the opening days of the Second world War. The first part of .this Review commemorates the founding of New Glarus one hundred and fifty years ago. The farewell address of Caspar Jenny (1812- 1860), a leading Glarnese citizen, speaks to us today as it did to the parting emigrants. The diary entry of Nildaus Durst (1797-1874), one of the two scouts who, after an extended journey through the Midwest, selected the land for the Glarnese emigrants, conveys some of the quiet excitement he felt during New Glarus' very first days. New Glarus had a good foundation for colonization. It had financial support from the sending society via the Emigration Society of Glarus. It was settled in a pleasant location with the resources necessary to gain a good start. Also, the surrounding communities were supportive of colonization. Many people from these communities were of German or Swiss origin and could speak the language fluently. This helped the newcomers to feel some connection with their new environment. The founders came in nuclear family units. This benefitted them in several ways. First, there was the emotional support family members gave to each other. …

This work, part novel, part chronicle, part historical reconstruction, pursues the thesis: "All involved with Andersonville were in the main pushed, manipulated, cheated" (189). This tale of misfortune has no heroes: Its central character is Henry Wirz, who for some months towards the end of his life was commander of Andersonville, one of the most notorious Confederate prisons for captured soldiers of the North.
