Pvt. George Skomsky (1925-), U.S. Army, 133^rd AAA Gun Battalion, the son of Ukrainian immigrants, grew up and came of age during the defining moments of the 20^th century: the Great Depression and World War II, respectively. The following examines his experiences in the context of these events, through his letters written home during World War II, recollections and reflections.

This thesis examines the intersection of imperialism, humanism and gender to argue that the Elizabethan period enabled imperial humanists to develop an identity for England as an empire of liberation rather than conquest. A subset of the imperial faction at Court, imperial humanists sought to reconcile activist and pragmatist agendas by marrying civic humanism with chivalry. Imperial humanists deployed this humanist chivalry--with an emphasis on temperance, wisdom, and justice--to elaborate a national mythos of pious restraint that denied avarice and oppression were inherent to extending English dominion overseas and envisioned empire as a virtuous pursuit for gentlemen. Italian-Jewish chemist and Holocaust survivor Primo Levi wrote in his work The Drowned and the Saved about the "Gray Zone," or holding place for all things difficult to categorize about his experiences in the Nazi camp Auschwitz. Because human tendency is to divide things in a rigid dichotomy, he argued, anything without a set role is brushed aside. I have extended this Gray Zone to include mutually shared situations from modern genocide including: the relationship of race/land to genocide, the "Forced Victim-Perpetrator" (victim forced to commit atrocities against his or her own people), and the complex international reaction to genocidal …

The Archduke Carl of Teschen, the premier commander of the Habsburg military between 1793 and 1809, is often misunderstood in his inherent conservatism as a leader, theorist and historian. Too often he is simply seen in the context of his looming contemporaries, Napoleon Bonaparte and Carl von Clausewitz. This paper will look to explore the key political, military and religious theories that the Archduke studied and the potential impact that can be seen in his work, both theoretical and in practice.

It is not self-evident that there should be Protestant nuns. Yet the Evangelical Sisterhood of Mary has existed in Germany for over sixty years. Why? How did the Sisterhood come to be? And what are the Sisters’ distinctive practices and beliefs? To answer these questions, I will provide a brief historical overview of the sisters’ founding, followed by a survey of the teachings of Mother Basilea, their preeminent founder, which I will augment with an analysis of the architecture of the sisters’ communities.

To Die A Noble Death: Blood Sacrifice And The Legacy Of The Easter Rising And The Battle Of The Somme In Northern Ireland History, Anne L. Reeder

In 1916, under the pressurized conditions of the Great War, two violent events transpired that altered the state of Anglo-Irish relations: the Easter Rising and the Battle of the Somme. These events were immediately transformed into examples of blood sacrifice for the two fundamentally opposed communities in Northern Ireland: Nationalists and Unionists. In 1969, Northern Ireland became embroiled in a civil war that lasted thirty years. The events of 1916 have been used to legitimize modern instances of violence. This paper argues, through the use of cultural texts, that such legitimization is the result of the creation of mythic histories.

In the wake of the 9/11 attacks on the United States, the responses to terrorism increased throughout the world. The face of Homeland Security is now heavily focused on the prevention, preparedness, response and recovery of terrorist attacks not only in the United States, but also amongst some of America's oldest allies. This thesis studies the level of change in homeland security strategy of European NATO members after the 9/11 attacks in the United States. The analysis of strategic components within each NATO member's homeland security strategy (history, laws, counterterrorism agencies and budget support) shows significant change. This work is a comparative thesis between northern and southern Italy, particularly on the socio-economic and geo-political differences that divide the country. Differences in areas such as historical background, geography, economy, tourism, social trends, and politics have separated the country into two distinctly dissimilar parts, the north and the south. With evidence of the industrial north in comparison to the agricultural south, as well as the introduction of “third Italy”, the economic differences between the country are clear. On April 14, 2009, the International Crisis Group (ICG), a think tank that provides suggestions on conflict resolutions around the globe, issued a report entitled Turkey and Armenia: Opening Minds, Opening Borders in which it made recommendations for Armenian-Turkish reconciliation and the establishment of bilateral relations between the Republics of Armenia and Turkey. The Pontic Armenian communities of the nineteenth century were distinguished from those of previous centuries in that they were exposed to major social, economic, and political transformations. Social transformation entailed enlightenment of an emerging middle class and revival of Armenian national consciousness; economic transformation was characterized by advancement in the standard of living and growing prosperity; and political transformation entailed participation in the local administration, the adoption in Constantinople of an Armenian "National Constitution," which broadened the administration of the confessional-based Armenian millet to include the middle class, and in the latter part of the century the emergence of Armenian …

Intern At The Harriman-Nielsen Farm: Where To Begin?, Nana Mikkelsen

During the months of October and November 2008, I interned on the Harriman-Nielsen Farm in Hampton, Iowa. The Danish American Heritage Society was looking for a Danish intern to assist the Harriman-Nielsen Farm board in the process of creating an interpretive exhibition, which would tell the stories of the estate. I immediately thought it would be a good place for me to apply my professional training in a combination of dramaturgy and museology. I find it interesting to introduce theatre elements into a museum context.

When New York is mentioned, it seems that thoughts inevitably tum to a very large city, tall buildings, and with sidewalks and streets crowded with unfriendly people. The latter is only partially true, but it fits the common understanding, or perhaps one should say, misunderstanding, of the city and, more importantly, the state.

On an earlier occasion, I have written that there is only one political party in America, the only one possible in a republic: the Democratic [in the original sense of the term, i.e. rule by the people]. It is a party that has many branches with the same political viewpoints. Nevertheless, they differ from each other on several points, which they defend in their various newspapers. They try to promote their opinions, views, and political creeds with the public through candidates whom they nominate for office in elections--first and foremost, the presidential election.
