How To Make A Colony: Reform And Resistance In Russian Turkestan, 1865-1917, Matthew J. Thrasher
German and Russian Studies Honors Projects
This project analyzes the Russian colonization of Turkestan in the second half of the nineteenth century. Specific attention is given to a group of Russian bureaucrats and military personnel who sought to reform the Tsar’s administration of the region. By outlining the debate surrounding economic and political reform, as well as the controversy circulating around Russian ethnographic practice, this project discusses the myriad ways in which the local population of Turkestan negotiated new forms of anti-colonial resistance within their rapidly changing social environment.

In 1579, a court in Essex, England arraigned thirteen-year-old Thomas Lever for acting as an assistant to William Randall, a conjurer suspected of leading a group of male witches. The court claimed young Thomas “mixed potions and was familiar with all [of Randall’s] workings.”1 Yet for Raphael Holinshed, the commentator on the trial, the case was unique only in the age of the defendant. Holinshed gives a stark example of a common view of the witch trials by noting “That her Majesty is sore oppressed by these witches and devil- mongers is now common knowledge, but that a child should …

In March 1521, Catholic Europe was on the brink of rupture. It had been more than three years since Martin Luther had posted his Ninety-Five Theses in the university town of Wittenburg, and what had been a mere invitation to a public disputation concerning the power and efficacy of ind ulgences had gone on to embroil Christian Europe in an unprecedented doctrinal conflict. Cissie Fairchilds offers a comprehensive synthesis of the main categories associated withgender history in early modern Europe. In particular, she draws attention to the uneasy relationship between patriarchal theory and the real lived experience of women who negotiatedand subverted masculine worlds during their everyday social interactions. "Irish Blood, English Heart": Gender, Modernity, And "Third Way" Republicanism In The Formation Of The Irish Republic, Kenneth Lee Shonk, Jr.

Led by noted Irish statesman Eamon de Valera, a cadre of former members of the militaristic republican organization Sinn Féin split to form Fianna Fáil with the intent to reconstitute Irish republicanism so as to fit within the democratic frameworks of the Irish Free State. Beginning with its formation in 1926, up through the passage of a republican constitution in 1937 that was recognized by Great Britain the following year, Fianna Fáil had successfully rescued the seemingly moribund republican movement from complete marginalization. Using gendered language to forge a nexus between primordial cultural nationalism and modernity, Fianna Fáil's nationalist project …

Contrary to popular belief, there have often been monastic sisterhoods and brotherhoods in Protestantism. In Germany, Möllenbeck, Loccum, and Marienberg all contained cloisters that embraced the Lutheran Reformation but retained much of their monastic practice. That such groups are relatively unknown may reflect the ambivalence of those in positions of power toward potential holdovers from Catholicism. Protestant monasticism has never been normative; therefore, its occurrence might best be understood as an implicit critique of the mainstream confessions. For the purposes of this paper I will not define monasticism as a vague and flexible lifestyle of contemplation and asceticism, as have …

T he German Postal system honored the 100th anniversary of Golo Mann's birth in 2009 with a new stamp, which displayed his face with the caption Literarischer Historiker, meaning literary historian. This apt description captures much about the essence of his thinking and work as a historian, as he was a uniquely gifted writer and thus bridged the gap between scholarly historical research and thoughtfully composed literature. It is uncommon for a historical fact to be so compelling that Hollywood would make a movie of it. It seems fictionalized history i~ the product that sells, with Saving Private Ryan being one such example it was a blending of fact and fiction into a blockbuster seller. Histor~ has accounts which are riveting yet overlooked. However, for writer Christopher McQuarrie and Na than Alexander one of those stories camt to light, a story that could be put on celluloid and sold.

When Charles the Bold of Burgundy tried to create a new kingdom between France and the German Empire, he decided to conquer the Swiss states. His aggression started the Burgundian Wars from 1474 to 1477. Charles besieged the fortress of Grandson early in 1476. When the Swiss garrison surrendered, Charles had all four hundred of the defenders hanged. In the Battle of Grandson, the Swiss drove the Burgundian Army away, but Charles soon invaded again. This time he besieged the fortress of Murten, and the Swiss rallied all their forces to attack him. In the subsequent battle, the Swiss infantry …

Recent discussions of the fragments of the Περι Βίων have seen the concept of pernicious luxury as a key to understanding aspects of this work of Clearchus. In particular, it is thought that Clearchus reflects a moralizing historiographical schema according to which wealth leads to an effeminate luxury (τρυφή), eventually producing satiety (κόρος), which in turn provokes the afflicted to violence (υβρις), ultimately bringing the subject’s destruction. We maintain, in contrast, that it is anachronistic to attribute this pattern of thought to Clearchus, and further, that the state of the evidence does not permit …

Im Mai 2007 taucht in Buenos Aires das Reisedokument eines gewissen Ricardo Klement aus dem Südtiroler Weinort Tramin auf. Der Ausweis mit der Dokumentennummer 100.940 und dem Stempel des Roten Kreuzes wurde im Juni 1950 vom Delegierten des Internationalen Roten Kreuzes in der Hafenstadt Genua ausgefertigt und unterschrieben. Was die Sache brisant macht: Bei Ricardo Klement handelt es sich um Adolf Eichmann, den Organisator der Shoah - des Völkermords an den Juden.
