The year 1936 would come to be known as the Year of the Three Kings. King George V died as the night was falling to a close on January 20. His oldest son, known as David in the family, became Edward VIII, and would abdicate before the year was out. During those 326 days, it would become apparent to those around him that he was not fit for the throne. His desire to marry Wallis Simpson would be the final straw. His younger brother, Albert, or “Bertie,” became George VI, and Edward became known as the Duke of Winsor. Through …

Dining out during the 1980s in Ireland could be summarised gastronomically by prawn cocktails, Chicken Maryland, Black Forest gateau and bottles of Blue Nun or Mateus Rosé. All this changed with the Celtic Tiger when the Irish public was introduced to Caesar salad, tomato and fennel bread, tapenade and Chardonnay. From 1989 to 1993, Restaurant Patrick Guilbaud was like a lone beacon of consistency in the Irish edition of the Michelin Guide. However, in 1994, five Michelin stars were awarded on the island of Ireland. Change was afoot. Many young Irish chefs and waiters emigrated during the 1980s although some, …

"One Rule of Law Project in Post-Soviet Russia" is published as Chapter 9 of the book At Home Abroad: Friendship First - A Look at Rule of Law Projects and Other International Insights, (ed. Joseph Nadeau, New York: Austin Macauley Publishers LLC, 2019). This book provides personal insights into an international cooperative effort to promote the rule of law in emerging democracies around the world. Professor Scherr's chapter examines the cultural context within a study of the rule-of-law project that was conducted between 1999 and 2004 in Vologda, Russia.

In 1971, an Iowa road crew accidentally unearthed an unmarked

cemetery. There were twenty-eight skeletons. Twenty-seven belonged to

whites, and state money quickly paid for their reburial. The other, a young

female Indian was packed in a box and shipped off to the University of

Iowa and the state archeologist. A local Indian by the name Running

Moccasins learned of the Incident and demanded that the woman's bones

be returned for proper burial.

In the South Bohemian region of the Czech Republic, the landscape is distinguished by a network of long narrow fields bordered by hedgerows clustered in small groups. These unique clusters of hedgerows have been interacting with their environment, effectively mitigating erosion, since they were first established in the High Middle Ages. In this research project I used historical maps to characterize land-use and land-cover (LULC) change relating to hedgerow features in one cadastral territory in the Blanice Watershed. Using georeferenced historical maps from 1837 and 1952, and unreferenced historical maps from 1837 to 1953, I compared the historical LULC to …

The Medieval Borderland: Geophysical Analysis Of A Later Medieval Deserted Settlement And Cultural Landscape From Western Ireland, Andrew Ryan Bair

This thesis investigates the archaeological remnants of an early 14th century settlement at Ballintober, Roscommon County, Ireland. An innovative methodology combining ground-penetrating radar, magnetic gradiometry, and archaeological excavations is utilized to reconstruct the medieval built environment, which was comprised of a masonry castle, nucleated settlement and wider arable agricultural landscape. By integrating the archaeological and historical records, I pose hypotheses related to the differential statuses of people at the settlement, their domestic and agricultural practices, and a timeline of their occupation and abandonment of the site. [Mis-]Managing Fisheries On The West Coast Of Ireland In The Nineteenth Century, John B. Roney

This study focuses on the cultural heritage of artisan coastal fishing in the west of Ireland in the 19th century. The town and port of Dingle, County Kerry, offers an important case study on the progress of local development and changing British policies. While there was clearly an abundance of fish, the poverty and the lack of capital for improvements in ports, vessels, gear, education, and transportation, left the fishing industry underdeveloped until well after the 1890s. In addition, a growing rift developed between the traditional farmer-fishermen and the new middle-class capitalist companies. After several royal commissions examined the fishing …

Translator’s Note: For most readers outside of Denmark, the Danish Golden Age begins and ends with Hans Christian Andersen and Søren Kierkegaard. At the time, however, both Andersen and Kierkegaard were outsiders in respect to the dominant cultural circle, that of the actress Johanne Luise Heiberg, her husband Johan Ludvig Heiberg, and his mother Thomasine Gyllembourg. Gyllembourg, along with Steen Steensen Blicher and Bernhard Severin Ingemann, is credited with giving Denmark its first canonical prose fiction. Despite her importance to Danish Golden Age literature and the history of European women’s literature, Gyllembourg is virtually unknown outside of Denmark, except among …

Trying To Disappear: One Translator Among Many Authors, Michael Favala Goldman

The Bridge

A literary translator ought, as much as possible, take on the voice of the author, or the author’s characters, in much the same way an actor takes on a role in a play. The goal is that the reader forget that the words they are reading have been translated at all. The new work needs to stand on its own as a legitimate work of literature, hopefully bearing successfully the unspoken attitudes and inferences of the original author, but in the new language. The artifice involved ought to be invisible.

It was in the early 1990's that I first met Bob. He was teaching, first as a Soros Foundation Fellow and then as a Fullbright Professor at the Lajos Kossuth University in Debrecen, a city in eastern Hungary. It was only a couple of years after the Fall of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of Communism. This was a time when it had finally become possible for Hungarians to travel freely in the world, but in practice very few of us were able to afford to do so.

Bieder's background, hls parents and siblings, his growing up, his schooling

and his teenage years before college.On the other hand, there seems

no explanation in reach why Robert E. Bieder did not receive a permanent

academic appointment despite his productive research and publication,

and why, after two to three years at an institution, he was again on the

move. He seemed to be changing from position to position in the United

States as well as abroad.

Gramscian Perspectives On Populism, Luke William Mooberry

Increasingly liberal states are facing challenges from populist movements. This paper argues that the prison writings of Antonio Gramsci can provide important insights into the phenomenon and how to counteract it. The first two sections outline a set of Gramscian analytical tools: hegemony, non-hegemony, passive revolution, and Caesarism. These theoretical tools are then applied to different periods of the Third Republic of France, 1870-1940. This paper looks at this French example because it features unique relationships between populism, ideology, and the experience of liberalism prior to World War II. Western Michigan University (WMU) hosted its 43rd annual archaeological field school this past July and August under the auspices of the Fort St. Joseph Archaeological Project. Two major crises occurred during the occupation of Berlin shortly after the end of World War II, both of which have been well documented and are summarized below. There was a third crisis, however, that has been largely forgotten but produced a substantial alteration in the organization of the National Guard, the Army Ready Reserve units, and the authority given to the president to mobilize the reserves. Starting in 1769, the Spanish established missions in Alta California. A small band of soldiers, Franciscan priests and volunteers walked from Baja California to San Francisco Bay through semi-arid, scarcely populated land stopping occasionally to establish a location for a religious community. Usually two priests, a few soldiers and a few Indians from Baja California settled at the spot. Their only resources for starting an economy were themselves, a few animals and a nearby source of water. They attracted the local Indians to join the community and perform the work necessary to create a strong economy. After only a few …
