“No Future For Ireland Under The Heel Of England”: Sinn Fein’S Voice Of Revolution, Agostina Pieri
“No Future For Ireland Under The Heel Of England”: Sinn Fein’S Voice Of Revolution, Agostina Pieri
Cohort 2025-2026
Agostina Pieri is a junior double majoring in History and Philosophy with a Spanish minor. She is fascinated by the intersection of morality and revolutions. Her Time Machine Project focuses on three pamphlets published by Sinn Fein during the Irish Revolution. This propaganda begs the question: how does Sinn Fein justify the use of violence? Her analysis focuses on the evolution of Sinn Fein’s arguments through the influence of the First World War and President Wilson’s “Fourteen Points.”

Debauchery And Decorative Art: Framing The Relationship Between Dining And Material Culture In British Country And Town House Dining Rooms During The Long 18th Century, Guoyang Sun
MA in Fine and Decorative Art and Design Dissertations
This dissertation explores the profound effect of material culture and rituals in elite British dining interiors during the long eighteenth-century. As spaces greatly influenced by the process of museumification, they are often perceived by contemporary and historical observers as settings intended for the ostentatious display of family lineage, taste and affluence. The dining rooms of British Georgian formal houses were highly curated proto museums with huge potential for display through architectural expressions, artworks and decorative objects, however, they were more importantly extremely complex environments that require complete analysis from multiple disciplines and perspectives.
In framing the intimate relationship between dining …

Janusz Krupski And His Times: Moral Rearmament From A Historical And Religious Perspective, Christopher Garbowski
Janusz Krupski And His Times: Moral Rearmament From A Historical And Religious Perspective, Christopher Garbowski
Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
This paper explores the concept of moral rearmament in contemporary East-Central Europe through the historical and religious legacy of Polish anti-communist opposition figure Janusz Krupski (1951–2010). Responding to sociologist Frank Furedi’s critique regarding the "moral disarmament" of the West, the author contends that religion serves as an essential—and frequently overlooked—pillar in restoring historical consciousness and moral resilience against totalitarian and geopolitical threats.
Focusing on the unique intellectual ecosystem of the Catholic University of Lublin (KUL) during the communist regime, the article details Krupski’s pioneering role in establishing an underground publishing movement, most notably the independent Catholic journal Spotkania (Encounters …
The Phenomenon Of Ukrainian Chaplaincy From The Underground Of The 1990s To Officer Ranks In The Historical And Spiritual Experience Of Lieutenant Colonel Of Aviation And Pastor Vasyl Khimich, Valentyna Kuryliak
Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
Vasyl Khimich is a career aviation officer, retired lieutenant colonel, and pastor who combined the discipline of a Soviet officer with the spiritual mission of developing educational standards. This interview is about how faith became a strategic resource of national security. The figure of Vasyl Khimich is exceptionally valuable for the history of Protestantism in Ukraine, as he combines the experience of a Soviet career aviation officer, a pastor, and a developer of the first standards of military chaplaincy in Ukraine. His path demonstrates the complex evolution of the Ukrainian military-Christian movement from underground meetings to official recognition at the …
“The Irishmen – Immigrants, Soldiers, And The Spark Of Revolutions”, Joshua Hanscheck
“The Irishmen – Immigrants, Soldiers, And The Spark Of Revolutions”, Joshua Hanscheck
History Theses
The Irish, as a people and a revolutionary inspiration, have been the subject of research and discussion for much of the late twentieth and twenty-first centuries. A trope has emerged that the Irish could take over the world, if they were not so busy chasing the bottom of their pub glasses, but the trope – stereotypes about Irish drinking aside – is grounded in some truth. The diaspora encouraged many things: a revival in Gaelic culture, a general disdain among outsiders for the Irish as a people group, and, most importantly, a revolutionary fervor that seemed almost infectious. This fervor …

Eurovision As A Platform For Cultural Diplomacy In Times Of Conflict, Lucy Meza
Eurovision As A Platform For Cultural Diplomacy In Times Of Conflict, Lucy Meza
CMC Senior Theses
This thesis examines how states utilize the Eurovision Song Contest as a platform for soft power, focusing on the conditions under which cultural performance translates into reputational gains. Drawing on Joseph Nye’s concept of soft power, Biasioli’s theory of songwashing, Zamorano’s typology of cultural diplomacy, Anholt’s competitive identity framework, and Feklyunina’s analysis of identity and narrative, it argues that Eurovision’s effectiveness as a soft power platform is fundamentally contingent on the alignment between a state’s cultural narrative and dominant international perceptions of its legitimacy. Through a qualitative comparative case study approach, the thesis examines two nations whose Eurovision participation during …
An “Outburst Of Irish Feeling”: Fascism In The Irish Free State, Keira Ilene Codey
An “Outburst Of Irish Feeling”: Fascism In The Irish Free State, Keira Ilene Codey
Open Access Master's Theses
This study examines the ideological development and political significance of the Blueshirt movement in the Irish Free State, focusing mainly on how the transnational fascist thought developed amidst local conditions. It argues that although the Blueshirts, associated with organizations such as the Army Comrades Association (ACA) under the leadership of Eoin O'Duffy, incorporated aesthetic and ideological features of other interwar European fascisms into their program, including palingenetic ultranationalism, corporatism, and paramilitarism, these elements developed within the context of Ireland’s postcolonial political culture. These ideas were rooted in commonly held anti-British sentiment, which linked fascist politics of resentment and national regeneration …
Shakespeare’S Martyrs And The Poetics Of Transformation, Robert Keim
Shakespeare’S Martyrs And The Poetics Of Transformation, Robert Keim
Theses and Dissertations--English
At the beginning of William Shakespeare’s career as a playwright, England’s most widely read book, after the Bible, was Acts and Monuments of These Latter and Perilous Days, commonly known as John Foxe’s Book of Martyrs. Foxe’s martyrological literature, along with the inherently theatrical nature of martyrdom itself, helped the lives and deaths of Reformation martyrs to assume a prominent place in England’s literary consciousness. Shakespeare was not immune to their influential presence, and though overt representations of martyrdom were too controversial for the popular stage, he did enrich his plays by endowing certain characters—through imagery, allusive diction, …

On The Chekist Front: Little-Known Pages Of The Life Of Ivan Voronaev (Agent "Nepliuev"), Founder Of Soviet Pentecostalism, Oleksandr Korotaiev
Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
The figure of Ivan Voronaev (1885-1937), founder of the Soviet Pentecostal movement, occupies a contested place in the history of Eastern European Protestantism. Confessional narratives portray him as an “apostle of the Slavs” and martyr of faith, while Soviet anti-sectarian literature depicted him as a “bourgeois agent” and conduit of foreign influence. Despite their opposition, both approaches largely ignore the Chekist dimension of Voronaev’s biography–his systematic interaction with the Soviet security services and his role in their operational activities as a covert agent.
This article reconstructs previously marginalized episodes of Voronaev’s life on the basis of operational, investigative, and reporting …
The Emergence Of The Dutch Republic As A Grand Tour Destination, Boele Van Oosten
The Emergence Of The Dutch Republic As A Grand Tour Destination, Boele Van Oosten
MA in Fine and Decorative Art and Design Dissertations
This dissertation examines the emergence of the Dutch Republic as a Grand Tour destination, tracing its foundations in the seventeenth century and its consolidation in the eighteenth century. Whilst traditional itineraries centred on encounters with classical antiquity and Renaissance art, the Republic attracted travellers through its financial stability, flourishing art market, renowned universities, and reputation for tolerance and modernity. These qualities offered visitors a distinctive intellectual and sociocultural experience that complemented, and at times rivalled, the established centres of the Grand Tour. This study addresses three interrelated themes: the Republic’s rise as a Grand Tour destination in its own right; …

Development Of True Orthodox Church In Kyiv Region (1927-1931), Oleksandr Trygub, Oleh Bazhan
Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
The preconditions for the formation and activities of the True Orthodox Church in the territory of the Kyiv region from 1927 to 1931 are studied in the scientific paper. Based on archival documents, the reasons for the emergence of the anti-Sergius opposition among the Orthodox clergy and laity who rejected the Declaration of Metropolitan Sergius (Stragorodsky) on loyalty to Soviet power are analyzed. It is shown that the Kyiv region became one of the centers for the development of the True Orthodox Christian movement in the Ukrainian SSR, where independent communities were formed. The specifics of underground church life are …

Religious And Cultural Dimension Of The "Ringing Cedars Of Russia" Movement In The Context Of Hybrid Warfare, Oleksandr Lukyanenko, Vitaly Dmytrenko, Vita Dmytrenko
Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
The article is devoted to a comprehensive religious analysis of the neo-religious movement “The Ringing Cedars of Russia,” based on the works of Vladimir Megre and the image of the prophetess Anastasia. The study covers the ideological and doctrinal foundations of the movement, its socio-cultural practices, the functioning of tribal settlements, as well as mechanisms of influence on individual and collective consciousness. Particular attention is paid to the concepts of “Vedrussia”, the sacralization of “Russian space” and the mythologization of Russia’s calling to revive the “primitive civilization of harmony.” The analysis shows that the movement, while declaring ecological and humanistic …

Bodies Of Knowledge: The Accuracy Of Medical Anatomical Drawings From The 14th To The 18th Century, Marina G. Mitchell
Bodies Of Knowledge: The Accuracy Of Medical Anatomical Drawings From The 14th To The 18th Century, Marina G. Mitchell
Honors Undergraduate Theses
From the fourteenth to the eighteenth centuries, European anatomical illustration underwent major transformations in response to changing scientific methods, technologies, and visual conventions, reflecting critical transitions in anatomical history. Scientific evolution allowed these images to achieve increasing structural precision and internal detail, though they frequently diverged from anatomical forms as they are understood today. This study examines how anatomical inaccuracies across five centuries emerged not from ignorance, but from deliberate mediation between purpose, observation, pedagogy, artistic convention, and cultural ideology. Through close analysis of works in visual comparison to their modern counterparts, this thesis identifies specific deviations from the twenty-first …
Navigating Mercy: Ethical And Emotional Terrains In Carolingian Society And Politics, Wei-Ting Chen
Navigating Mercy: Ethical And Emotional Terrains In Carolingian Society And Politics, Wei-Ting Chen
Theses and Dissertations--History
This dissertation investigates mercy in the Carolingian period, especially its political dimensions. A sustained, holistic examination of mercy in the early medieval period remains lacking. This study examines mercy not only as a history of an idea but also as a history of emotion, tracing its transformation from the ancient Greek and Roman worlds through patristic literature and into Carolingian political discourse. This study argues that mercy played a central role in the construction of Christian kingship within Carolingian political discourse. Early Church Fathers reinterpreted mercy from a controversial concept in Roman Stoic philosophy into a positive virtue in Christian …

“None In Velvet Gowns”: Camp Followers And White Womanhood In Eighteenth-Century Anglo-American Warfare, Angelica Labren Torres
“None In Velvet Gowns”: Camp Followers And White Womanhood In Eighteenth-Century Anglo-American Warfare, Angelica Labren Torres
History Theses
For over two hundred years, women who followed American and European armies during the long eighteenth century were popularly stereotyped and denigrated as prostitutes, burdens, and generally individuals of ill repute by both contemporaries and subsequent generations of historians. While recent scholarship has largely debunked this long-standing characterization as simplistic and inaccurate, the question remains: why exactly were these women so mischaracterized in their own time, particularly by commissioned officers and other members of Anglo-American middling and elite classes, when ample evidence existed of their material usefulness and comparative marital fidelity? This thesis seeks to address the ideological and cultural …

The Response Of Diaspora And Religious Institutions On The Refugee Crisis: Case Study Of The Republic Of Croatia, Galyna Sagan Dr., Tetiana Kostiuk Dr.
Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
This article is dedicated to the multifaceted support that Ukrainian diaspora and Catholic organizations in the Republic of Croatia have been providing to Ukrainian refugees since the full-scale Russian invasion on February 24, 2022. The study details the systemic response of such key religious institutions as the Diocese of Križevci, Caritas and the Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS). Particular attention is paid to integration initiatives, like educational programs developed by the Catholic University of Croatia (HKS), and the provision of spiritual and pastoral care, which remains the unique prerogative of the Church. The study emphasizes coordination between ecclesiastical and state …

Pentecostals In The Ukrainian Ssr During Collectivization And The Holodomor Of 1930–1933: Socio-Adaptive Survival Practices, Oleksandr Korotaiev
Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
The article examines the social adaptation and survival practices of Pentecostal communities in the Ukrainian SSR under the conditions of forced collectivization, dekulakization, and the Holodomor of 1930–1933. Drawing on criminal-investigative case files of the GPU, top-secret Soviet security service documents, party and state decrees, and testimonies of contemporaries, the study reconstructs individual, family, and communal strategies employed by believers in response to systematic state violence. Particular attention is devoted to Pentecostal communities in the Odesa okrug, especially the village of Holma in the Balta district, where Soviet repressive policies manifested themselves through a combination of economic pressure, religious persecution, …
Interpreting “Vampire” Burials In Medieval Eastern Europe, Arleen Chau
Interpreting “Vampire” Burials In Medieval Eastern Europe, Arleen Chau
Undergraduate Research Posters
Since the early twentieth century, various atypical or deviant graves have been excavated across Eastern Europe, particularly in Poland. These discoveries have prompted much speculation, as the individuals were interred with items such as sickles placed over their necks or abdomens, along with other mortuary artifacts not considered normative compared to those found in typical community burials. Such practices suggest that these individuals were regarded as deviant or pariahs within their social contexts. Consequently, many have been quick to label these as “vampire burials,” interpreting them as measures intended to keep the dead from rising. However, this definition is problematic, …

The Symbolic Language Of Militarized Orthodoxy In Patriarchal Sermons, Architecture, And Pseudo-Historical Memory, Oleksandr Lukyanenko
Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
The article is devoted to a comprehensive cultural and religious analysis of the processes of militarization of religious worldview in modern Russia using the example of public speeches of Patriarch Kirill of Moscow, as well as the symbolic space of the Main Temple of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation. Particular attention is paid to the study of the mechanisms of sacralization of war through the integration of historical memory, Orthodox rhetoric and the state ideology of the “Russian world”. The study analyzes the peculiarities of the interpretation of World War II as the sacred foundation of modern Russian …

"More Boldly I Shall Go:" Jacobites, Hanoverians, And The Fabrication Of Nostalgia, 1745-1766, Jacob Louis Shropshire
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
This study investigates how Jacobites and Hanoverians constructed competing forms of nostalgia, identity, and political meaning in the decades after the rebellion of 1745. Although the defeat of Prince Charles Edward Stuart at Culloden ended any realistic hope of a Stuart restoration, it sparked a cultural struggle in which both supporters and opponents of the Stuarts depicted the Highlander as a symbol of heroic resistance or barbarism. A psychic struggle emerged as a result, and the Highlander became beloved by Jacobites and loathed by Hanoverians. These representations circulated through paintings, engravings, clothing, glassware, newspapers, pamphlets, and verse, which became central …
The Origins And Expansion Of The Soviet Union’S Military-Industrial Complex, Noah B. Heminger
The Origins And Expansion Of The Soviet Union’S Military-Industrial Complex, Noah B. Heminger
All Master's Theses
This thesis explores the way in which the “Soviet Military-Industrial Complex” that dominated the Soviet Union’s economy in the latter half of its existence came into existence and what forces caused its expansion. The first force was the ideological and strategic beliefs and assumptions of the leadership and military planners which held that the USSR would always be in existential danger. The second was Stalin’s “Revolution from Above” which broke down the barriers economically and politically that resisted the militarization of politics, economics, and society. And the final force was the stresses of World War II which caused the Soviet …
Crafting The Right To Vote, Breana M. Mosher
Crafting The Right To Vote, Breana M. Mosher
Knowledge and Creativity Expo
This paper examines how British Suffragists between the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries used traditionally feminine domestic crafts as tools of political protest and communication. Excluded from formal political speech and subjected to censorship, violence, and imprisonment, women in the suffrage movement transformed textiles such as banners, posters, embroidery, and postcards into powerful tools of visual propaganda. Through close evaluation of suffrage-era material culture, this paper argues that domestic crafts enabled women to reclaim their voices and publicly expose state violence and political repression. By employing symbolism, color, and slogan-based design, suffragists created a recognizable visual identity that countered …
