Utah Valley University's George Sutherland Archives participated in a state-wide digitization project called Pioneers In Your Attic: Preserving the Legacy of the Overland Migration. Developed by Scott Eldredge of Brigham Young University, several university digitization centers, or hubs, collaborated with regional public libraries, museums, and historical societies to host "scanning events," inviting members of the public to bring unique, historic family photographs and documents, such as diaries, journals, letters, and business papers, to be scanned for free, and added to an openly accessible online digital collection called Pioneers In Your Attic. Uncharted Waters? Cultures Of Sea Transport And Mobility In New Zealand Colonial History, Frances Steel Feb 2014

Uncharted Waters? Cultures Of Sea Transport And Mobility In New Zealand Colonial History, Frances Steel

Frances Steel

On a tour of Australia, New Zealand and Fiji in 1909, assistant undersecretary of state for the colonies Sir Charles Lucas ventured to suggest 'that in Australia the "bush" must necessarily have a greater effect on the future than in New Zealand, and that in New Zealand the sea will play a greater part in the call of the race than in Australia'. The 'back blocks', he remarked, 'have more especially fashioned Australian life and character'. Although brief and impressionistic, his assessment of the relationship between geography, identity and the course of history still resonates today. The bush is a …

Cruising New Zealand’S West Coast Sounds: Fiord Tourism In The Tasman World C.1870–1910, Frances Steel

Frances Steel

The hugely popular summer cruise tours of the West Coast Sounds in the South Island of New Zealand reveal a colonial history of leisured mobility and landscape appreciation common to New Zealand and Australia. Cruising the Sounds was a practice imbued with privilege, exclusivity, emotional upliftment and wonder, generating shared attachments to wilderness space. This culture of maritime tourism offers new insights into the mobile practices which shaped the Tasman World, and points to the centrality of ships and shipping routes as spaces of transcolonial history.

Avondale And Chicago's Polish Village, Jacob Kaplan, Daniel Pogorzelski, Rob Reid, Elisa Addlesperger

Elisa E. Addlesperger

[Back cover] Home to Chicago’s Polish Village, impressive examples of sacred and industrial architecture, and the legendary Olson Waterfall, Avondale is often tagged as “the neighborhood that built Chicago.” Images of America: Avondale and Chicago’s Polish Village sheds light on the little known history of the community, including its fascinating industrial past. From its beginnings as a sleepy subdivision started by a Michigan senator, it became a cultural mecca for Chicago’s Polish community, playing a crucial role in Poland’s struggles for independence. Other people also called Avondale home, such as Scottish proprietors, African American freedmen, Irish activists, Swedish shopkeepers, German …

Trying Home: The Rise And Fall Of An Anarchist Utopia On Puget Sound, Justin Wadland Dec 2013

Trying Home: The Rise And Fall Of An Anarchist Utopia On Puget Sound, Justin Wadland

Justin Wadland

Trying Home traces the history of the anarchist colony of Home, Washington, from its founding in 1896 on a remote Puget Sound peninsula to its dissolution amid bitter infighting in 1921.

As a practical experiment in anarchism, Home offered its participants a rare degree of freedom and tolerance in the Gilded Age, but the community also became notorious to the outside world for its open rejection of contemporary values. Using a series of linked narratives, Trying Home reveals the stories of the iconoclastic individuals who lived in …

When War Came To Fremantle, 1899 To 1945, Deborah Gare, Madison Lloyd-Jones Dec 2013

When War Came To Fremantle, 1899 To 1945, Deborah Gare, Madison Lloyd-Jones

Deborah Gare

In 1911 the journalist and historian Ernest Scott advised readers of the
Round Table that ‘England’s quarrels, England’s interests, are ours also,’
and that Australia ‘will be available for the defence of the Empire as a
whole, wherever their services may be required.’1 The nation had, by this
time, been a Commonwealth for just a decade.
When war broke out in 1914, Australians enthusiastically supported
Britain and its Empire. Australia then had a population of less than five
million people (not including Aborigines, who at that time were not yet
counted in the nation’s Census) and yet sent more than …

An Exposition Of The Causes And Character Of The War, Peter J. Aschenbrenner Dec 2013

An Exposition Of The Causes And Character Of The War, Peter J. Aschenbrenner

Peter J. Aschenbrenner

In 1815 Congress produced a post-mortem, its second of the War of 1812, under the title ‘An Exposition of the Causes and Character of the War,’ with a word count at 32,363. The date assigned for publication by the Annals of Congress (according to editors working at a two-decade remove) was February 10. A lot was happening. Events in February, 1815 include the Thankgiving resolution for Jackson’s victory at New Orleans which appears in proceedings for Wednesday February 15 with Monday, February 20 being the day the Treaty of Ghent was sent to the Senate. The Exposition is decidedly exculpatory: …
