In 1911 the journalist and historian Ernest Scott advised readers of the
Round Table that ‘England’s quarrels, England’s interests, are ours also,’
and that Australia ‘will be available for the defence of the Empire as a
whole, wherever their services may be required.’1 The nation had, by this
time, been a Commonwealth for just a decade.
