In 1967, a salvage excavation was conducted in Nazareth (map ref. 22855/73395), following the discovery of a rock–hewn burial cave during preparations for construction on a private plot. The cave contained four hewn loculi, one of which was breached during the course of the construction work. According to information preserved in the archival file, tombs were uncovered during the construction of the access road to ancient Samaria. Twelve circular shafts were revealed, which undoubtedly served as burial installations. Some date to the Israelite period (Iron Age II), while others belong to the Roman period.

The excavation was conducted following the discovery of a group of cist graves during expansion work on the western margins of Nahariya–Achziv–Rosh Hanikra road. The buildings of the Arab village of Kawkab al-Hawa, which stood on the ruins of the fortress, were dismantled. The collapse layers were removed, and the upper floor of the Crusader fortress was exposed in trial probes dug at a number of points.

The excavations, on behalf of the Department of Antiquities and Museums, were directed by A. Ovadya. Khirbat Sharta and Khirbat Sharatti are located on two hills facing each other. In 1967, another excavation was conducted at Khirbat Sharta following the discovery of an additional burial cave that was dated to the Byzantine period.
