Caddo Ceramic Sherd Assemblages From Sites In Smith County, Texas, Timothy K. Perttula
Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
The analysis herein of ancestral Caddo ceramic assemblages from sites in Smith County, Texas is a companion piece to the analysis of numerous ceramic collections at the Texas Archeological Research Laboratory at The University of Texas at Austin (TARL) from sites in Gregg and Wood counties, Texas. The Smith County collections were obtained in the 1930s and early 1940s by Jack Hughes, then an East Texas resident, but later a legendary Texas Panhandle archaeologist.

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
Substantive advancements have been made toward automating the application of landmarks and semilandmarks. These approaches can aid in expediting the landmarking process, while simultaneously reducing landmarking errors and investigator bias. This study enlists a template-based approach to quantify deviations in mesh processing outputs using a Pontchartrain dart point from the collections of the National Forests and Grasslands in Texas, which was scanned and processed at multiple resolutions using microCT and laser scanners. Following data collection and output, meshes were processed using an automated and replicable workflow. A batch processing protocol was developed in Geomagic Design X and Control X to …

Tracing The Patterns: Fields, Villages, And Burial Places In Lebanon, Pascal Flohr, Jennie Bradbury, Letty Ten Harkel
Classical and Near Eastern Archaeology Faculty Research and Scholarship
Archaeological research in Lebanon often focuses on settlement from the Bronze Age to Romanperiods, while surrounding landscapes, earlier and later periods are under-represented. Largedatasets collecting information from all periods and site types, such as the EndangeredArchaeology in the Middle East and North Africa (EAMENA) database, address this imbalance.EAMENA predominantly uses satellite imagery to identify archaeological sites and the threatsposed to them, leading to the recognition of many previously unpublished sites, includingabandoned buildings and agricultural terraces. Here we explore how such data can be used totrace patterns of settlement and landscape use. Transects running from coast to uplands innorthern and southern …

From Qualitative To Quantitative: Tracking Global Routes And Markets Of Venetian Glass Beads During The 18th Century, Pierre Niccolò Sofia
From Qualitative To Quantitative: Tracking Global Routes And Markets Of Venetian Glass Beads During The 18th Century, Pierre Niccolò Sofia
BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers
The Venetian glass bead industry has its roots in the Late Middle Ages. The development of Atlantic trade and, particularly, the slave trade from the second half of the 17th century increased the demand for glass beads. The 18th century would be the heyday of this industry, when Venetian beads attained a significant global diffusion. While scholars have long known the global exports of beads from Venice, this paper contributes new quantitative data on their precise routes and markets in the 18th century, toward the Orient and toward the Atlantic. Using beads as a case study, this paper shows how …

The Chemistry Of Nueva Cadiz And Associated Beads: Technology And Provenience, Brad Loewen, Laure Dussubieux
The Chemistry Of Nueva Cadiz And Associated Beads: Technology And Provenience, Brad Loewen, Laure Dussubieux
BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers
Dating to about 1500-1560, Nueva Cadiz beads are the earliest glass beads found in the Americas, and many questions regarding their technology and provenience surround them. Analysis of 10 beads from the namesake Nueva Cádiz site in Venezuela and 33 beads collected from an unknown site or sites near Tiahuanaco, Bolivia, provide chemical compositions of their turquoise, dark blue, white, red, and colorless glasses. We analyze the sand, flux, and colorants that went into their fabrication. The two collections show a common beadmaking tradition and provenience, except for three beads made of high-lime low-alkali (HLLA) glass. Colorants and opacifiers are …

The Last Prisoners Of War: How Nazi-Looted Art Is Displayed In U.S. Museums, Monica May Thompson
Geifman Prize in Holocaust Studies
How art museums approach NLA is important today because much of the public relies on museums for their education. NLA cases are especially controversial because they are not only legal battles, but ethical ones so museums have to be extra careful approaching them. Even if the museum has won the legal battle the public may not see them as winning the ethical one therefore they might want to avoid displaying this information to the public. However, as we can see with the previous websites, it actually looks worse for museums not to be open and honest about their NLA pieces …

The Archaeology Of Resilience: A Case Study From Peel Town, Western Australia, 1829-30., Lauren Tomlinson, Shane Burke
Sciences Papers and Journal Articles
This paper describes the archaeology of one family’s tolerance to the stressors associated with the settlement of a new place. Artifacts associated with the maintenance of clothing suggest that a British family newly arrived at the Swan River colony in the southwest of Australia had the ability to remain composed during a period of reduced resources and psychological strain. The family’s ability to resist stress was probably the result of the social knowledge gained during previous experiences with internal migration in the British Isles during a time of high social dislocation.

Nueva Cadiz Beads In The Americas: A Preliminary Compositional Comparison, Heather Walder, Alicia Hawkins, Brad Loewen, Laure Dussubieux, Joseph A. Petrus
BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers
Nueva Cadiz and associated beads are among the earliest categories of European glass beads found in the Americas. Named after the site in Venezuela where they were first identified, these tubular, square-sectioned beads occur in regions of 16th-century Spanish colonial trade. A similar style occurs around Lake Ontario in northeastern North America in areas of 17th-century Dutch and French colonial trade. We compare the chemical composition of beads from South America and Ontario, Canada, to explore their provenience and technology. Differences in key trace elements (Hf, Zr, Nd) strongly indicate separate sand origins for the two bead groups. Comparison with …

A Beaded Hair Comb Of The Early Ming Dynasty, Valerie Hector
A Beaded Hair Comb Of The Early Ming Dynasty, Valerie Hector
BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers
This article describes an unprovenanced artifact: a 700-year-old beaded hair comb probably entombed with a woman who died between 1405 and 1446 during China’s early Ming dynasty. It is intended to establish basic facts and stimulate further research. The comb may be the first intact example of mainland Chinese beadwork to undergo radiocarbon dating as well as laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) analysis. The lead-potash (Pb-K) composition of the comb’s glass coil beads resembles that of coil beads recovered from jar burials of the 15th-17th centuries in Cambodia’s Cardamom Mountains. Thus, the comb links glass coil beads ostensibly made …

Insight Into The 17th-Century Bead Industry Of Middelburg, The Netherlands, Hans Van Der Storm, Karlis Karklins
BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers
During the first half of the 17th century, several beadmaking establishments operated in the city of Middelburg in the southwestern corner of the Netherlands. Bead wasters recovered from several find sites in the old part of the city reveal the diversity of the product line which featured beads decorated with straight and spiral stripes. Several chevron types were also produced. There are similarities with wasters found at contemporary beadmaking sites in Amsterdam, indicating that both production centers made similar bead varieties. Few of the bead varieties represented have correlatives in the areas of North America that were under Dutch control, …

Beadmaking During The 17th And 18th Centuries In Eu County, Normandy, Guillaume Klaës
Beadmaking During The 17th And 18th Centuries In Eu County, Normandy, Guillaume Klaës
BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers
This paper reconstructs the history of a family of French beadmakers in Eu County, Normandy, from 1687 to 1747, as well as the context of their migration from the urban beadmaking center of Rouen. While Normandy had produced windowpane and bottles since the Middle Ages, artisans who made “crystal” soda glass – the glass of beads – were newcomers from Italy and Languedoc. They founded glassworks in Paris and Rouen in the late 16th century. Conflicts with Rouen artisans and merchants led the Mediterranean glassworkers to migrate to Eu County in 1634, where their crystal factories spun off a rural …

A Multispecies Perspective Into Dietary Genetic Adaptations And Ancient Migration In The Peruvian Andes, Kelsey Jorgensen
A Multispecies Perspective Into Dietary Genetic Adaptations And Ancient Migration In The Peruvian Andes, Kelsey Jorgensen
Wayne State University Dissertations
Successful adaptation to the high-elevation Andes would have required both cultural and biological adaptations by early human populations. These past adaptations continue to shape the evolutionary outcomes of both humans and non-human species today. A multispecies perspective was used to examine how humans and non-human creatures, specifically insects, were shaped by past human adaptations. This dissertation asked two primary questions: 1) Given the importance and evolutionary history of potato consumption in the Peruvian Andes, is a genetic adaptation to better digest potato starch detectable in present-day Peruvians? and 2) Using the Andean Potato Weevil (APW) phylogeny as a proxy, what …
Popping (Post)Modernism: Joaquín Torres-Garcia & Latin America's Pop Art Movement, Alexandra Branscom
Popping (Post)Modernism: Joaquín Torres-Garcia & Latin America's Pop Art Movement, Alexandra Branscom
Scripps Senior Theses
Even though the canon of Western Art History has attributed the Pop movement to the US and the UK, artists from around the world have made significant contributions to pop art and formed their own Pop movements. This includes the Latin American pop artists Felipe Ehrenberg (Mexican), Antonio Henrique Amaral (Brazilian), and Juan Dávila (Chilean), who, between the years 1968 and 1974, fled right-wing political unrest of their respective home countries and gained artistic education in dominant, imperialistic countries. These artists subvert the capitalistic, adverting language of pop art to promote the localized political sensibilities of their home countries and …

Mothers Behind Cameras: Mother-Artist, Mother-Child Dyads In Sally Mann’S Immediate Family And Elinor Carucci’S Mother, Hayley A. Pierpont
Scripps Senior Theses
Women, particularly mothers, are often made invisible within narratives of their own family and domestic spaces, despite their role as creators and maintainers of those spaces. This perpetuation of invisibility is threaded throughout the history of artistic practices, (photography especially). Contemporary mother-artists Sally Mann and Elinor Carucci confront and unapologetically reflect their singular experience(s) with motherhood through their photography, which addresses the symbiotic dyads of mother-child and mother-artist. This thesis focuses on an analysis of four images: Mann’s The Wet Bed and Lee’s Dirty Hands, and Carucci’s Trying to Protect Emanuelle and I Will Protect You. In both …

The Hidden Secrets Of Historical Artistry, Jennifer B. Musser
Honors Undergraduate Theses
When I began developing the video game concept for my thesis, I realized that I was one of the kids that grew up in a society where video games took prevalence over historical artistry. I, however, was unaware of the hidden secrets that resided in the art and how much they contribute to the video games I enjoy playing today. This thesis aims to provide the younger generations with an engaging and stimulating way to experience historical artistry, more specifically the Italian Renaissance, without having to consult a history book. I aim to provide enough detail on multiple aspects of …
