How Is Global Postmodernism Globalized? Lee Seung-Taek’S Conceptual Art As The Methodology Of Survival For The Unrepresentable, Mi Hyun Oh

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis takes a comprehensive look at the integrated social context of South Korean artist Lee Seung-taek’s (b.1932) biography. I look at the ways in which Lee’s life experiences and practices capture the essential and critical influence of postwar South Korea’s strong anticommunist stance and his precarious status as a North Korean refugee in South Korea on the formation and development of his conceptual sculpture and performance work.

The Case Of New Institutionalism: Maria Lind At The Kunstverein München, 2002–2004., Olga Tykhonova

Theses and Dissertations

The thesis focuses on a particular moment in the history of Kunstverein München - the directorship and curatorial practice of Maria Lind from 2002 to 2004, referred to as exemplary of the New Institutionalism. I analyze Lind’s directorship through the lens of the director-curator concept and institution as an “agonistic space.”

It seeks a critical language to challenge institutional frameworks to account for the creative output of artists' bands and the relationship between parallel and hybrid popular music and avant-garde performance practices.

Morris High School: A Biography, Naomi Sharlin Feb 2019

Morris High School: A Biography, Naomi Sharlin

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Morris High School was conceived and built in the Bronx with a lofty mission: to provide a comprehensive, world-class secondary education to the children of immigrant and working-class families, and in so doing to elevate the American public education system and America itself. Such a weighty mission for an institution would result, one could expect, in painstaking record keeping, the lionization of great leaders, consistent investment in the building, and attention given to problems encountered or created over the years. And yet, the life of Morris High School remains elusive. Key figures in its story are lost to obscurity like …

The "I" Of The Artist-Curator, Natalie Musteata Feb 2019

The "I" Of The Artist-Curator, Natalie Musteata

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation charts the proliferation of artist-curated exhibitions in museums and institutions of art from 1969 to the early 2010s. It is my contention that the artist-curated exhibitions of these four decades can be divided chronologically into several types: in the 1970s and ’80s, they disrupted museological conventions and helped contemporize the (perceived) aging collections of historical institutions; in the late 1980s and ’90s, they tackled pressing social and political issues, reimagining the practice of “institutional critique”; in the late 1990s and 2000s, they indulged in solipsistic investigations of the artist’s psyche, reinforcing the traditional, romantic conception of the artist …

Ray Johnson: Collage As Networked "Correspondance", Gillian Pistell Feb 2019

Ray Johnson: Collage As Networked "Correspondance", Gillian Pistell

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Scholars unfailingly comment on the complex community of artists, poets, and musicians that form the foundation of Ray Johnson’s visual language, yet do not examine the implications of these relationships on Johnson’s art. “Ray Johnson: Collage as Networked ‘Correspondance’” looks at Johnson’s mail art and collages through the lens of Social Network Theory, a sociological concept used to analyze social groups, to investigate possible meanings recorded within Johnson’s elaborate imagery and show how his relationships manifested in his work. I argue that Johnson used his mail art to gather people and information to create a network, which he then manipulated …

On The Use Of Geometric Elements In The Works Of Laszlo Moholy-Nagy And Piet Mondrian, Kimberly Spayd, Molly Reynolds, Christian Lansinger Jan 2019

On The Use Of Geometric Elements In The Works Of Laszlo Moholy-Nagy And Piet Mondrian, Kimberly Spayd, Molly Reynolds, Christian Lansinger

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

Working in overlapping artistic circles in the first half of the twentieth century, Laszlo Moholy-Nagy and Piet Mondrian had very different intentions for how their pieces would affect viewers. But while their aims differed dramatically, the individual techniques they employed were both rooted in a mathematical foundation. Moholy-Nagy used simple two-dimensional shapes, scaled repetition of those shapes, and variations in perspective to illustrate the potential benefits of machine technology to the common person. Mondrian, alternatively, limited the elements in his work to perpendicular lines, asymmetry, and a dedicated adherence to the plane in order to align his viewer's metaphysical state …

Bridging The Research/Teaching Divide With Dah And Sotl-Ah, Renee Mcgarry, Virginia B. Spivey Phd Jan 2019

Bridging The Research/Teaching Divide With Dah And Sotl-Ah, Renee Mcgarry, Virginia B. Spivey Phd

Publications and Research

This paper explores the potential for rigorous pedagogical scholarship to complement developments in digital art history (DAH). In addition to introducing ideas and methods that characterize scholarship of teaching and learning (SOTL) in higher education, we focus on two major themes: how digital tools and techniques can support robust scholarship of teaching and learning in art history (SoTL-AH) and ways that SoTL-AH can be used to evaluate and demonstrate the impact of DAH projects in the classroom and the public realm. Our goal is to encourage greater exchange between these two emerging fields that can together advance art historical study.

The Locus Of Meaning In Medieval Art: Iconography, Iconology, And Interpreting The Visual Imagery Of The Middle Ages, Lena Eva Liepe Jan 2019

The Locus Of Meaning In Medieval Art: Iconography, Iconology, And Interpreting The Visual Imagery Of The Middle Ages, Lena Eva Liepe

Studies in Iconography: Themes and Variations

This book addresses the status and relevance of iconography and iconology in the contemporary scholarly study of medieval art. There is a widespread tendency among art historians today to regard the study of iconography and iconology in the tradition of Erwin Panofsky as an outmoded and trivial pursuit. Nonetheless, Panofsky’s three-level interpretative model sits firmly in the methodological toolkit of art history, and remains a common point of reference among adherents and adversaries alike. Iconography and iconology demands to be taken seriously as a feature of continued praxis in the discipline. The book contains a collection of essays on the …

Yay Or Neigh? Frederic Remington’S Bronco Buster, Public Art, And Socially-Engaged Art History Pedagogy, Jennifer Borland, Louise Siddons Jan 2019

Yay Or Neigh? Frederic Remington’S Bronco Buster, Public Art, And Socially-Engaged Art History Pedagogy, Jennifer Borland, Louise Siddons

Art History Pedagogy & Practice

This article outlines a collaborative, community-based project developed for two undergraduate art history courses at a large state university. The exercise focused on Frederic Remington’s 1894-95 sculpture, the Bronco Buster, a large bronze image of a cowboy whipping a bucking bronco with the goal of taming it. An enlarged replica of Remington’s sculpture was installed recently in the downtown district of this university town, raising questions about how it was selected and funded, as well as what message the sculpture sent about the town to its visitors. As we discussed our frustration with both the iconography and the selection …

Multisensory And Active Learning Approaches To Teaching Medieval Art, Marice Rose, Tera Lee Hedrick Jan 2019

Multisensory And Active Learning Approaches To Teaching Medieval Art, Marice Rose, Tera Lee Hedrick

Art History Pedagogy & Practice

In this article, two professors share methods and examples of active learning in order to teach Western European and Byzantine medieval art through a multisensory lens. The course content and pedagogy are situated in the “sensory turn,” a conceptual and methodological approach that began in anthropology and has transformed medieval art historical scholarship in recent years. The discipline of art history has traditionally focused on the visual impact of objects and monuments, but the sensory turn has prompted art historians and architectural historians to investigate how art objects and monuments engage all five senses, transforming the “period eye” into the …

A Didactic Teaching And Learning Project In Art Market Research. Researching And Publishing The History Of Commercial Art Dealing, Nadine Oberste-Hetbleck Jan 2019

A Didactic Teaching And Learning Project In Art Market Research. Researching And Publishing The History Of Commercial Art Dealing, Nadine Oberste-Hetbleck

Art History Pedagogy & Practice

In addition to research, one of the main tasks of art historians is the authoring of academically and stylistically sound texts in differing genres. This case study of the research and publishing project Zur Geschichte des Düsseldorfer Kunsthandels (A History of Commercial Art Dealing in Düsseldorf) will demonstrate how research and writing can be integrated into teaching. The project involved supervised work with source materials, data visualization, semi-structured interviews (oral history), a supplementary writing workshop, as well as detailed feedback from a writing instructor, the teacher, and fellow participants in the seminar. In addition, the high practical relevance of the …

Creativity-Integrated Art History: A Pedagogical Framework, Alysha Meloche, Jen Katz-Buonincontro Jan 2019

Creativity-Integrated Art History: A Pedagogical Framework, Alysha Meloche, Jen Katz-Buonincontro

Art History Pedagogy & Practice

Art history offers a unique opportunity for students to encounter real, historical examples of the creative process in action. By showing examples of the complex process through which artwork is created, art history classes can provide emulative examples for the next generation of innovative designers, artists, historians, educators, and creative thinkers. Art history has a tradition of teaching Big-C creativity principles by highlighting creative products and individuals. Therefore, the art object is emphasized at the expense of unpacking the process and everyday, or mini-c, creativity of the work. At a time when the field of Art History is beginning to …

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines representations of embrace in a Roman de la rose (Morgan Library, M.245). Emphasis is on the reader’s tactile interaction with the manuscript as an object, and the notion of romances as sites for a distinctly physical reading practice, in which miniatures would be kissed, rubbed, or pierced.

Archaeology Of Social Patterning, Chase Bray Jan 2019

Archaeology Of Social Patterning, Chase Bray

Theses and Dissertations

The episteme that created the grid as a structure for logic has been usurped. We compose meaning from an adulterated grid, or pattern. I process meaning through the abuse of acrid patterns and the grid, the reduction of imagery to silhouettes and by referencing both cultural and classical mythology.
