Favissa: Past Archaeological Excavation Reports

In January 1951, an excavation was conducted on a hill southeast of Kibbutz Na’an (map ref. 187/643), following the discovery of graves and artifacts made of pottery and bronze during construction of the kibbutz's industrial buildings. The excavation, on behalf of the Department of Antiquities and Museums, was directed by E. Ben Dor. The excavation continued a previous excavation at the site in 1950, under the direction of J. Ori, in which 12 graves were exposed.

In December 1950, a salvage excavation was conducted near the 'Hamei Tveria' housing complex, west of the road (map ref. unknown). The excavation was directed by B. Ravni. A cesspit (1.7 × 3.5 m, depth 1.5–1.7 m) was found, the walls and plastered floor of which were exposed. Pottery that was dated to the Early Islamic period were discovered in the pit, some with a green glaze. Additional pottery sherds, that were dated by the excavator to the Late Islamic period, were found, some of which had a brown glaze and decorated with brown lines.

In May 1950, an excavation was conducted at the Crusader fortress in Ẓefat (map ref. 2466/7637), under the direction of M. Dothan. Pottery was found in the areas around the walls and the tower, which consisted mainly of vessels coated with a smooth green glaze, bowls with a ring base, a few additional glazed vessels, one pottery fragment decorated with a painted geometric pattern and several vessels with a gouged decoration. The finds also included unpainted and unglazed vessels, which included various bowls, kraters, jars, and jugs, which were dated to the Crusader – Mamluk periods. Only a few earlier …

In 1950 and 1951 salvage excavations were conducted in Ayelet Ha-Shahar (Map ref. 2546/7690), following the exposal of a vertical shaft cover during foundation work south of the Kibbutz water tower. The excavation, on behalf of the Department of Antiquities and Museums, was directed by P.L.O Guy and M. Dothan, with the assistance of A. Hiram (surveying). The shaft (Diam. 0.6 m, Depth c. 4 m) was paved with 11 clay sections (Diam. c. 0.6 m each), placed one on top of the other. In 1950, an excavation was conducted in Kafr Kanna, in the village school yard (map ref. 232/739). The excavation, on behalf of the Department of Antiquities and Museums, was directed by Father Joseph Lyumbrini of the Monastery of Terra Santa. The remains of a building were discovered, built of stones taken from an earlier structure that had been destroyed. The building was dated to the Early Islamic period.

In October 1950 and January 1951, trial excavations were conducted in Haifa, following the laying of sewer pipes from Dolphin Street to the Hospital (map ref. unknown). The pipeline extended straight to the Haifa port seawall. The excavations, on behalf of the Department of Antiques and Museums, were directed by M. Prausnitz. Occupation layers that were dated to the Roman, Byzantine, Islamic, Crusader and Mamluk periods were exposed.

In October–November 1950, a salvage excavation was conducted in “Shikun Olim Alef” (the “Olim A” housing complex) in Tiberias (map ref. unknown), under the direction of B. Ravni. The excavation was carried out following the digging of pits for the buildings’ foundations. The remains of structures built of large basalt stones with a filling of small stones set in white plaster were discovered. During May 1949 and March 1950, salvage excavations were conducted on the El-Waqf hill in Bene Beraq, under the direction of Jacob Kaplan (map ref. unknown). The 1949 excavation was conducted following the discovery of the remains of ancient structures during foundations work for construction. On the slope of the hill an olive-press was unearthed. In July–August 1949, an excavation was conducted in west Jerusalem, in the area of the Arab village of Sheikh Badr that resided in Jerusalem until 1948 (map ref. 219/632). The excavation, on behalf of the Department of Antiquities and Museums, was directed by M. Avi-Yonah. Two areas were excavated (c. 1750 square meters) in which seven probes were opened. The remains of several occupation layers were exposed, consisting of complex of horizontal and vertical rock-cut formations oriented north–south and east–west. In 1949, a salvage excavation was conducted on the eastern slopes of Khirbat Ibreiktâs, south of Hadera Railway Station (map ref. 1896–9/7037–40). The excavation was conducted following the construction of the new railway line. The excavation, on behalf of the Department of Antiquities and Museums, was directed by J. Ory. Four burial caves were exposed. The caves, which had been hewn on two levels of the kurkar slope, were damaged during the paving of the railway line. Several shaft tombs were discovered, which were filled with alluvium up to their ceiling.
