Deconstructing The Afd: An Analysis Of The German Right-Wing Populist Political Party, The Alternative For Germany (Vchc Poster), Elizabeth A. Breckenridge
Research and Creativity Symposium
The Alternativ für Deutschland (Alternative for Germany) (AfD) is a far-right populist party that has quickly grown in power within the past decade, particularly in Eastern German states, due to its emphasis on nationalization, populist rhetoric, and attraction to voters’ fears about immigration and cultural change. The AfD has managed to mobilize strong voting support within five years, gaining parliamentary seats in the Bundestag (Federal Parliament) in 2017, and is now considered the main opposition party to the established parties. The AfD is the first right-wing party to gain significant voting attention since 1945, capitalizing on the rise of right-wing …

An Analysis Of Reviews Related To Grammar Teaching And Learning In Die Unterrichtspraxis/Teaching German (2000-2023), Lucian Rothe
Faculty and Staff Scholarship
Teaching and learning grammar has been a cornerstone of many German language courses. (Im-)Plausible Classroom Communities: World Language Learners‘ Perceived Accuracy Of Stereotypical Attributions To Teachers Of German, Lucian Rothe
Faculty and Staff Scholarship
Grounded in self-based and community-oriented concepts of motivation research into learning world languages, this study investigated stereotypes about native-speaker and non-native speaker teachers of German that 110 novice learners of French, German, Russian, and Spanish had encountered. It furthermore analyzed how participants rated the accuracy of the described stereotypes. With the goal to explore whether stereotypical attributions to teachers of German speak to Chavez’s (2021) concept of the plausible foreign-language self, the study examined how clichés about instructors and their perceived accuracy differ between learners and non-learners of German. Statistical analyses showed students’ awareness of stereotypes about teachers of another …

"Analytical," "Angry." And "(Too) Honest"?! Learners' Stereotypes About Teachers Of German., Lucian Rothe
Faculty and Staff Scholarship
This study investigated stereotypes about teachers of German that 67 novice learners of German at a U.S. university had reportedly encountered. Consequently, the investigation explored the perceived accuracy of clichés associated with native-speaker and non-native-speaker instructors. Students' stereotypical notions were sorted into categories using principles of grounded theory. Statistical analyses showed that respondents were able to list various stereotypes about instructors of German. Responses also reflected societal narratives concerning native-speaker and non-native-speaker teachers' strengths and shortcomings. Last, and of importance to the future of German Studies, participants considered more favorable stereotypes about teachers as more accurate and less-favorable clichés as …
"Do They Know The Normal Language?": Language Attitudes And Ideologies In German Hip Hop Culture, Matt Garley
"Do They Know The Normal Language?": Language Attitudes And Ideologies In German Hip Hop Culture, Matt Garley
Publications and Research
This article presents a theoretical discussion of the relationship between language ideologies and language attitudes and builds on previous work by providing an organized framework connecting these notions. This framework is evaluated with reference to online and offline ethnographic work surrounding attitudes and ideologies about anglicisms, or English loanwords, among German hip hop fans and artists. Language attitudes are theorized as individual thoughts and expressions about language, and are often, but not always, informed by individual reproductions of language ideologies, which are conceived of as systematic, shared over groups of individuals, enduring, and mediated. Language ideologies can then be organized …

The Origin Of Nyc’S Nickname The Big Apple, Gerald Leonard Cohen
Arts, Languages and Philosophy Faculty Research & Creative Works
The expression "The Big Apple," meaning "something special, out of the ordinary, world class" is traced from its adoption as the nickname of New York City in 1971 back through time, to the jazz culture of the 1930s and ultimately to its apparent origins in racing jargon in the early decades of the 20th century. © 1993 Maney Publishing.
