Intrinsically dialectical in nature, sudden messianic change and the resolute character of the law are so closely connected with one another that both concepts should be among the key factors shaping a broad understanding of global cultures today. Whether we await the coming of the messiah as the Jewish religion teaches or commemorate his having come and died as most Christian teachings hold, it appears that Walter Benjamin’s “now of a particular recognizability” (The Arcades Project 493) remains elusive, especially with respect to the correlation between the past and the future. Friedrich Schillers Charaktere sind dynamisch und statisch. Ihre Ziele ändern sich nicht durch das Schauspiel, aber die Ziele verursachen innere Konflikte, die mit einem äußeren Konflikt beschäftigten. Die Charaktere lösen die Konflikte durch den Verzicht eines Ziels auf. Schillers historische Tragödien handeln von absoluter Auswahl. Sie sind am Anfang fehler- und lückenhaft, aber sie ändern sich durch das Stück und werden absolut. Dann werden sie bestimmt, ein Ziel zu erreichen, aber sie verlieren ihre Menschlichkeit. Sie zeigten die gefährlichsten Situationen der Menschen mit Wahrheit und hielten nichts zurück. Sie zeigten Wirklichkeit, aber diese Wirklichkeit blieb im Theater. Man ging ins Theater und sympathisierte sich mit den Charakteren. Das Schauspiel endete, und gleichzeitig endete das Mitleid. Juden behaupten, dass sie nicht jüdisch genug ist. Deutsche sagen, dass sie nicht deutsch genug ist. Gesteckt zwischen zwei Welten und zwei Kulturen, ist Esther Discherheit eine von der wichtigsten Schriftstellerinnen im heutigen Deutschland. Als die weltbekannte Stimme einer gegenwärtigen jüdisch-deutscher Generation, kämpft sie stark gegen Kategorisierung, Stereotypen und Heuchelei. In ihren Werken finden wir alle Probleme vom heutigen Deutschland und jungen deutschen Juden. In dieser Arbeit versuche ich die Texte von Esther Discherheit zu analysieren und die „inneren“ und „äußerlichen“ Schwierigkeiten von ihrer Mix-Identität zu untersuchen. From Hegel to Merkel, from Bismarck to BMW, German culture has defined and re-defined itself through a cycle of reaction; thesis, antithesis, synthesis. Modern Germany has certainly not escaped this pattern, existing in a very deep and surprisingly present way in reaction to the collapse of the East German state and the formation of a unified Germany. This paper examines the ways in which contemporary German authors evidence this reaction in their work. As a nation at the heart of the East/West divide throughout the Cold War, Germany provides an ideal lens through which to view the shifting cultural, economic, …

This course is an introduction to German cinema. We will study masterpieces of German film, important critical and theoretical discussions of them, and the contexts in which they were produced and received. As a critical lens, we will rely heavily on psychoanalytic and Frankfurt School criticism, focusing on writings by Walter Benjamin, Siegfried Kracauer and Theodor Adorno. By the end of the semester, students should know the history of German film, have a better understanding of German culture, and have developed a critical understanding that is useful for their appreciation of all cinematic form.

Trümmerliteratur - literally “rubble-literature" - is a brand of literature that became important after the Second World War, led by Heinrich Böll, whom I term the apologist of German Trümmerliteratur. Typically included under this classification are the writers who began to produce in the years immediately following the war, and in whose work the rubble and ruins of the landscape figure prominently. Böll provided the programmatic framework for the movement in his “Bekenntnis zur Trümmerliteratur" but his relationship to another type of ruin writing presents a point of friction when he appears to be working in a romantic mode to …

Flanerie is the art of taking a walk, leisurely observing the movements and spaces of the city. By writing about cityscapes, urban realms, and the condition of society, flaneurs are able to describe the uniqueness of the metropolis and give life to the modern city—creating a photograph of an urban setting. In the early nineteenth century, and even today, flaneur literature has been ultimately dominated by men who have documented their cultural and aesthetic interactions with the city. Mental illness is not just a technical problem of psychology or public health: it is a cultural problem. Words such as "crazy," "nuts," ''wacko," "psycho," "mad," or "insane" reflect serious ambiguity about mental illness. This ambiguity about mental illness, embedded in Western culture, proves stronger than scientific and medical enlightenment. Because some notion of reason is so central to our notions of humanity and the self, perceived violations of reason are even more threatening than crossings of racial, cultural, and gender boundaries. The tragedy Hakon Jarl the Mighty was completed toward the latter part of the year 1805 at Halle, Germany. The author, Adam Gottlob Oehlenschlaeger, wrote the work in Danish and later on translated it into German. It was first published in November, 1807, in Nordiske Digte, and was presented for the first time at the Royal Theatre in Copenhagen, January 30, 1808. Before this, Oehlenschlaeger had used the same materials in his poem, The Death of Hakon Jarl, which appeared in 1802 ..
