Inhabiting the Discourses of Belonging; Franz Kafka and Yoko Tawada examines the role of language in creating the identity of the foreigner in German prose. Writing at opposite ends of the 20^th century, Kafka and Tawada serve as harbingers for a broader sense of alienation that comes with writing as an Other. Using lenses provided by Spivak, Butler, Said and Deluze, this essay surveys the broader cultural concepts and theoretical implications of the notion of the metaphorical subaltern that can be created in prose, and the particularities presented by the German language in creating and articulating this identity. This paper seeks to understand how, and why, understandings of lesbianism shifted in Germany over the course of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Through close readings of both popular cultural productions and medical and psychological texts produced within the context of Imperial and Weimar Germany, this paper explores the changing nature of understandings of homosexuality in women, arguing that over the course of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the dominant conceptualization of lesbianism transformed from an understanding of lesbians that was rooted in biology and viewed lesbians as physically masculine “gender inverts”, to one that was …

Die Erforschung künstlerischer Kompositionen, die in psychiatrischen Anstalten geschaffen wurden, begann als interdisziplinäre Disziplin zwischen Kunstgeschichte, Medizin, Anthropologie, und den Naturwissenschaften. Die Gelehrten dieser Fächer haben damals geglaubt, dass die Kompositionen von Geisteskranken in psychiatrischen Anstalten mit einer Urkultur vergleichbar waren. Diese Gelehrten sahen ähnliche formelle Eigenschaften in der Kunst der Geisteskranken und der Kunst der “barbarischen” Urkulturen Europas, wie sie z.B. in europäischen Höhlenmalereien erhalten ist. Ich behaupte jedoch, dass die Kompositionen von Geisteskranken, die sie unter den Eindrücken von visuellen Halluzinationen gemalt haben, auf ein universales künstlerisches Gestaltungsprinzip deuten.

Der Chiemseekessel wird wohl eine von diesen Artefakten. Interessant ist der Geschichte von der Chiemseekessel. Zuerst dachten die Taucher, die hat den Chiemseekessel gefunden, daß sie eine antikes keltisches Artefakt hatte. 1960er sind die Ära von neues Detektivliteratur von Sjöwall und Wahlöö. Detektivfiktion ist nicht nur ein klug und ein interessant Genre sondern auch eine Stimme von Politik und Glauben. Die schwedischen Autoren von der Martin Beck Serie schreiben um die Gesellschaftskritik in die 10 Romanen, die sie hat zwischen 1965-1975 geschrieben. Für Verstandnis um den politischen Glaube in der Serie, man die Kontext von der Autoren in der Kalten Krieg wissen muss. Sjöwall und Wahlöö hat ihren Glauben von Marxismus und Gesellschaftskritik in jede Martin Beck Buch.

In an essay published in 2004[1] Thomas Brobjer surveyed Nietzsche’s attitudes toward Plato and argued that, far from entering into a dedicated agon with that philosopher, he had little personal engagement with Plato’s views at all. Certainly, he did not grapple so immediately and fruitfully with him as he did with Emerson, Schopenhauer, Lange, and even Socrates. Instead, he merely “set up a caricature of Plato as a representative of the metaphysical tradition … to which he opposed his own.”[2] This hardly reflects the view of Nietzsche scholarship in general, but Brobjer argued his case vigorously by ranging broadly over …

"Rhineland Bastard" was a derogatory term commonly used when referring to Afro-German children. Initially the term denoted only those whose father had been an Allied soldier of African descent, more specifically children of soldiers in the French colonial troops who occupied the important industrial Rhineland. The term gained popularity during the years of the Weimar Republic 1919-1933 and eventually began being used exclusively to refer to all AfroGerman children regardless of their father's occupation or heritage. The Rhineland Bastards were victims of persecution, sterilization, and brutality.

In Reconsidering the Emergence of the Gay Novel in English and German, James P. Wilper examines a key moment in the development of the modern gay novel by analyzing four novels by German, British, and American writers. Wilper studies how the texts are influenced by and respond and react to four schools of thought regarding male homosexuality in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
