Before applying for this ORCA grant, I worked with Professor McFarland on a project about Johanna M. Lankau, a German author who wrote a hundred years ago about her walks throughout Dresden and the surrounding countryside. As an aspect of this research, I searched through newspaper microfiches in Berlin, July 2008, looking for stories and articles by author Johanna Lankau. I came across literature reviews of the popular German writer Theodor Fontane. His most beloved work is his encyclopedic Wanderungen durch die Mark Brandenburg (“Hikes through the Region of Brandenburg”). This caught my attention because Lankau also wrote about walking …

Travel journalism was one of the most popular forms of literature in the early nineteenth century. Because it was so widely read, it affected many people and therefore had significant historical impact. In addition, it was one of the few literary genres that women were allowed to participate in. Elisa von der Recke (born 1754) was one of the first females to take advantage of this publically acceptable genre. For a number of years, students within the German Department have been working with professors on The Sophie Digital Library and Resource Center project. This project, known affectionately within the German Department as “the Sophie project”, involves the transcription, translation, and web posting of works by German-speaking women. The Sophie project, simply put, is massive. There are hundreds of texts which have already been posted online, but there remains still quite a bit of work to be done.

Luise Greger, a talented and accomplished composer in Germany during the 20th Century, has largely been overlooked as an important voice in music history. Her impressive opus of art songs, in addition to an operetta, was quite popular during her day, as is evidenced by several contemporary newspaper reviews. The Sophie Project sponsored a well-received performance of Greger’s collected art songs in 2003, which established the value of performing her music. In Tonga, a group of islands deep in the South Pacific Ocean, religion is an important element of life for all of the islanders. In addition to protestant missionaries from England who helped Tonga establish their constitution, Tongan culture was also deeply influenced by Catholicism. Due to the large population of German businessmen living in Tonga and the close proximity of Tonga to the German colony in Western Samoa, it was supposed that German missionaries must have also traveled to the Tongan islands and contributed to the establishment of some of the schools and other relics of religious influence there. …

In the era of imperialism Germany came late to the scene, but quickly attempted to catch up to its colonist neighbors and established colonies throughout the “heathen” lands such as China, India, and Africa. To generate interest and support for the colonist efforts a new genera of literature emerged called “colonial literature”. The literature was written by Europeans for Europeans. For my research I wished to discover how those publications dealt with and portrayed the character of the native in African literature.

Bound Poets: The Influence Of Medieval Society On German Poets Of The High Middle Ages, Brian Dunn, Dr. Johannes Evelein

Poets of the German high Middle Ages, the period around 1200 AD which represents the pinnacle of medieval achievement, were greatly influenced by the society around them. Politics, religion, and medieval culture all figure prominently in the works of these artists. The content of the great works of this period (for my study’s sake, I used Wolfram von Eschenbach’s Parzifal and Gottfried von Strassburg’s Tristan, arguably the two most noted works of the time) may have been very different if it were not for the outside societal influences.

While serving as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Poland Warsaw Mission, I came across historical records indicating that as early as 1860 branches of the Church were formed in present-day Poland. According to those records, some of these early branches reported significant membership, in the hundreds, only a few years after their formation. Branches exhibiting such successful growth included those located in the current cities of Szczecin, Wroc­aw, and ­ary. From feminism to Marxism, moral to multi-racial criticism, writings from the colonial era have been intensely analyzed by scholars. Thanks to their studies, we have been provided with important but general contextual knowledge of colonial literature. However, one vital subset of this field, colonial missionary literature particularly by women, has been, with few exceptions, almost entirely ignored.

My research is to examine the actual structure that dictates the shape of plural formation in German, and why in some dialects we see a failure to consistently form the plural using the method present in the standard language. Using previous research along with new data gathered from the Pfeffer Corpus, our goal was to examine the varying plural forms attested and gather a clearer picture of dialectal differences.

My research began as I came across contradicting theories concerning the Anglicization of Pennsylvania German while writing a paper for an advanced modern German course. While researching for that preliminary paper, I found scholars suggesting that English has completely taken over the PA German language. This project proposed an analysis of a series of children’s books published in 1904 by a mission in Berlin. The project’s depth and uniqueness were based on the reading of both the text and the accompanying pictures. I was able to participate in the collection of the documents, translate each book in the series of six, and write and present a research paper outlining a post-colonial art historical approach to the volume specifically about India.

In Tonga, an archipelago deep in the South Pacific Ocean, German immigrants during the middle and late nineteenth century played an important role in the development of the islands. The presence of businessmen involved in the Copra trade was especially significant, and according to historical evidence, members of the Wolfgramm and Sanft families, both from Pyritz, Pomerania, Prussia were among the most influential. Ada Christen (1839-1901), Viennese feminist, naturalist, and popular poet, published Faustina: Drama in fünf Akten, in 1871. The drama, which was set as a melodramatic version of Goethe’s Faust, did not succeed, and today, Faustina still exists only in library archives (Kord 344). The purpose of my work with Faustina was twofold: to transcribe the text of the play for SOPHIE, BYU’s database of German women’s literature, and then to write a paper analyzing the text.

This study compared the levels of anxiety that students experienced when taking a foreign language in the classroom with those taking a foreign language at a distance. It also aimed to determine if the student’s academic performance in the course could be predicted by his or her foreign language anxiety level. The sample consisted of 107 undergraduate students (57 traditional classroom students and 50 online students) enrolled in SPAN 101 at Indiana State University in the spring of 2012. Edward Thomas, often identified as a war poet, eludes definitive characterization despite the fact that his poems are often anthologized as war poems. However, unlike other widely-known war poets, such as Siegfried Sassoon and Wilfred Owen, the imagery present in Thomas’s poetry contains much subtlety and features dominant usage of nature themes. Everyday listeners make personal judgments about the people with whom they are speaking based on the accent or voice quality of the speaker. Studies have shown that a person’s speech– independent of accent–can influence a listener to make judgments about the speaker’s intelligence, sociability, trustworthiness, and a number of other personal traits (Hiraga, 1999). But what happens when “foreign” accent is added to the equation? Purnell et al. Numerous articles have examined the difficulties Korean speakers have learning the English /l/ and /r/ sounds (e.g., Borden et al 1983; Smith, 2001; Han, 2002). Most Korean learners of English hear and produce no distinction between English /l/ and /r/, because no surface contrast exists in Korean between these two liquid sounds (Iverson & Sohn, 1994). Common knowledge assumes that capitalism and socialism structured life differently with regards to what was public and private. This paper critically investigates this notion, focusing not on property, but on the realm of ideas and personal experiences. With a basis in historical and theoretical notions of the public and private spheres as conceptualized by Hannah Arendt, I analyze critical works by Jurek Becker and Heinrich Böll written in the two German states in the 1970s.
