I had not met Michael Ritterson before he visited the Conservation Lab at Special Collections, where he was having a book mended, but I had certainly heard of him. A former faculty member of the German department, Mr. Ritterson is now a German translator, taking on projects from translating the work of a 17th German woman’s study of butterflies to the poetry of a Berlin leftist written during the 1968 Movement. And, by previous contact in the mail, he had heard of me. So after Mary Wooton showed him the fully repaired book, we were formally introduced and had the …

The Berlin-based firm of W. Collin led by Wilhelm and Georg Collin and the antiquarian, author, and editor Ernst Collin were among the leaders in German bookbinding trade and writings about the trade from the mid-1800’s into the mid-1930’s. During that same time, bookbinding experienced many transformations, as well, moving from a trade practiced in smaller master-run shops to large industrial firms, including changes in materials, book structure, aesthetics, and overall business climate with concerns about quality and business opportunities. As court bookbinders to Prussian Kings and German Emperors, the firm of W. Collin was privileged with access to commissions …

Libraries' and Librarians' Publications

New Wine Into Old Wineskins?: Adding The Visual To Information Literacy Instruction, Carol A. Leibiger, Alan W. Aldrich
New Wine Into Old Wineskins?: Adding The Visual To Information Literacy Instruction, Carol A. Leibiger, Alan W. Aldrich
Carol A Leibiger
Images are significant information carriers in new technologies. Scrutinizing the written word ignores communication work done by images. Intermediality, or information literacy understood as metaliteracy, suggests ways to assess images using many of the same criteria for evaluating verbal content, with added visual-literacy criteria. The presenters combine visual and textual literacy into a holistic critical-thinking approach, which enriches interpretation when learners apply rigorous rhetorical criteria to texts, regardless of their media. Suggestions for such instruction will be provided in a LibGuide.

The Mother Of All Libguides: Reduce Maintenance And Enhance Uniformity Through Strategic Planning, Carol Leibiger, Alan Aldrich

Many librarians are using the LibGuides product to develop online subject guides, provide library support for courses and the reference desk, or for sharing information with their patrons. One of the most useful features of LibGuides is the ability to share content across different LibGuide pages. Conversely, one of the most problematic issues is the constant need to update content resulting from changing web page URLs, changes in, or even elimination of, databases reflecting changes in the information industry; and revising content in teaching …

We are well aware that most members of our campus communities are highly dependent on mobile technologies. What are the implications for libraries? What are the implications for teaching these technologies and via these technologies? How can we keep our colleagues up to speed in this maelstrom of technology? We can now use WorldCat.org on our mobile phones, and EBSCOhost just released its customized application for mobile device users. How can we integrate these new services into an already full menu of services? How do we get started, and which services should we be providing? How can we best integrate …
