New Wine Into Old Wineskins?: Adding The Visual To Information Literacy Instruction, Carol A. Leibiger, Alan W. Aldrich Mar 2013

New Wine Into Old Wineskins?: Adding The Visual To Information Literacy Instruction, Carol A. Leibiger, Alan W. Aldrich

Carol A Leibiger

Images are significant information carriers in new technologies. Scrutinizing the written word ignores communication work done by images. Intermediality, or information literacy understood as metaliteracy, suggests ways to assess images using many of the same criteria for evaluating verbal content, with added visual-literacy criteria. The presenters combine visual and textual literacy into a holistic critical-thinking approach, which enriches interpretation when learners apply rigorous rhetorical criteria to texts, regardless of their media. Suggestions for such instruction will be provided in a LibGuide.

The Mother Of All Libguides: Reduce Maintenance And Enhance Uniformity Through Strategic Planning, Carol Leibiger, Alan Aldrich

Carol A Leibiger

LibGuides have won acclaim from librarians because of the ease with which they can be created. One of the most useful features of LibGuides is the ability to share content across different LibGuide pages. Conversely, one of the most problematic issues is the constant need to update content resulting from changing web page URLs, changes in, or even elimination of, databases reflecting changes in the information industry; and revising content in teaching …

And One Device Will Rule Them All: Make Way For Mobile Technologies, Danielle P. De Jager-Loftus, Alan Aldrich, Carol Leibiger, David Midyette

Carol A Leibiger

We are well aware that most members of our campus communities are highly dependent on mobile technologies. What are the implications for libraries? What are the implications for teaching these technologies and via these technologies? How can we keep our colleagues up to speed in this maelstrom of technology? We can now use WorldCat.org on our mobile phones, and EBSCOhost just released its customized application for mobile device users. How can we integrate these new services into an already full menu of services? How do we get started, and which services should we be providing? How can we best integrate …

Libguides On Steroids: Expanding The Use Of Libguides To Justify Workload And Support Library, Carol Leibiger

Carol A Leibiger

LibGuides have captured the attention of the American academic library world. Subject guides like LibGuides are intended to provide access to resources for disciplines or courses to supplement library instruction provided during one-shot sessions or at the reference desk. LibGuides are available to users when and where they are needed. A constant refrain in the literature on subject guides is the workload inherent in their creation and maintenance. LibGuides are easy to create. However, the time required to maintain LibGuides continues to have a strong impact on workload for otherwise busy librarians.

As Information Literacy Coordinator (ILC), the presenter faces …
