This study is structed around three components. It begins with a brief reflection on the paradox of the existence in university education of two literary institutions – French literature and Francophone literatures – whose works are nevertheless written in the same language (French). Then the article proposes a transcultural and transnational approach to overcome such dichotomy – France and French-speaking peripheries – by a methodology based on the principle of unity in the diversity of the elements of the texts from three aspects: literary genre, language/speech, and intertextuality. In biblical language, transfiguration refers to the "change in bodily appearance" of the crucified Christ revealing his "divine nature". In the same way, it can be said that the writer is metamorphosed through the process of writing by the creation either of an alter ego or of an imaginary double, be it, animal or inanimate. The first case proposes original figures of the "social status" of the writer. In the second, the latter borrows the voice of a cat or makes a piece of furniture or an intimate object to speak. As in all postcolonial societies confronted with the question of illiteracy, in Algeria, film adaptations pose a political and cultural stake. Due to the phenomena of political and moral censure and self-censorship, only ten novels were carried over to the screen during one 36-year period. However, with the rebirth of Algerian cinema in the Nineties, screenwriters are once again interested in setting Algerian novels in images. These new adaptations, which are often done in co-production with France and Belgium, introduce the new problems of language. The audience for these films, which are expressed mainly in French, is thus likely limited …

Three women narrate their lives in French, the colonist's language, instead of in Arabic, their mother tongue. They pay homage to their families in order to rid themselves of guilty and revengeful feelings. In Les saisons de passage and Le bonheur a la queue glissante, Andree Chedid and Abla Farhoud express their love for an absent mother, who represents both the rebellious and submissive arabic woman. In La prisonniere, Malika Oufkir denounces the king's injustice for having condemned Oufkir's family for life and General Oufkir to death because he attempted a military putch against Hassan II. In this essay, I explore various dimensions of theoretical terms such as exile, nomadism, diaspora, and border. These terms have a temporal and spatial dimension. They are not equivalent to each other and they generate different kinds of identity narratives. In fact, in their strict definitions, as John Durham Peters demonstrates, they oppose each other. Yet, in contemporary texts, fiction and non- fiction, regardless of the individual experiences portrayed, they are also often intertwined. Since the publication of Vivre me tue in 1997, Paul Smaïl's published statements about the necessity for a "Beur" writer to protect his dignity and his freedom behind a pseudonym have generated a significant layer of metafiction which this essay proposes to examine. An analysis of Smaïl's different types of narrative accounts will help us elucidate the cultural and literary effects produced by the writer's strategy.

While it had somewhat disappeared as a central preoccupation in recent African fiction, the issue of "race" comes up in a striking way in Daniel Biyaoula's first novel, L 'impasse. Published in 1996, L'impasse sets out to expose through the eye of a rather cynical first-person narrator the neurotic nature of postcolonial subjects' relation to his/her racialized origin. Focusing on the body as a site of authenticity or alienation, the novel can be read as a contemporary and creative version of the "Black experience" as Franz Fanon theorized it almost half a century before in Black Skin White Masks. Psychological detachment is often presented as an exile from which there is no return. The works of Malika Mokeddem illustrate the lack of social support for psychic space of the individual who passes through anxiety and ends in psychological detachment. This article proposes to show, in L 'interdite and N'zid, how Mokeddem affirms nevertheless hope for recovery from this state. In the fiction of Farjallah Hark, fire and heat constitute distinguished means of expression in various fields. In his conception of fire, there is an intermingling between what is natural and what is social; good and evil are both employed, and a group of complexes are formed, such as the Promethee complex, the Empedocle complex, or the Novalis complex.
