The rather common use of a preface in African literature raises the question of the poetic value of such a practice. A preface written for the author by an older or recognized writer usually seeks to legitimate or consecrate that work. The author who writes his own preface, however, has other goals in mind and his preface is marked by a certain number of properties which, on a practical level, lend themselves to ambiguous interpretation. The Swiss writer Albert Cohen learned very early to consider French his native language as opposed to the Greco-Venetian dialect spoken by his parents. The dilemma arising from conflicting forces between his Eastern Judaic heritage and his success as a Western Francophone writer caused a great deal of inner turmoil which manifested itself in his writings. This article examines the author's struggles in choosing the French language and underlines the consequences of his decisions.

Less well known because of its size, despite its political integration in the European Union, the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg is set apart by a practice of spoken French operating within the framework of a complex literary field marked by its national language, a dialect of Germanic origin. The first part of this article deals with socioeconomic and sociolinguistic aspects, relations with France, the teaching of French and questions that relate to writing. The second part details the specifics of a literary production in French that is amazingly varied.

The migratory flows from the former colonial territories have encountered in France a settling process of non-native populations, a growing proportion of whom, born of immigrant parents, have obtained French nationality. Literature, film and music reveal that, with respect to Francophonie, the current situation of these frequently stigmatized minorities overturns the traditional categories and demarcation lines between French and Francophones.

In Algeria, conflicts between Western and Arab-Muslim models have led to symbolically non-linear structures recalling mathematical and scientific principles. Assia Djebar seeks possible explanations for the violence of the nineties in the repression of certain political events that occurred during the struggle for independence. The gaps in the historical memory parallel Le Blanc de l'Algerie's fragmented a-chronological text.

It is as if these works have been confined to the space which produced them, the suburbs, symbol of marginality and illegitimacy. The short story is very much alive in Haitian literature, most especially among women writers. As a favorite genre for describing insecurity on the sociocultural, political and identity level, it reflects the difficult circumstances in which short story writers labor and the obstacles that they encounter in finding a publisher, an audience, in a word, a place in the disporic field of Haitian literature. In particular, the short story genre allows for a formal, stylistic and structural hybridity that suits the writers' desire to experiment with narration even as they seek an appropriate voice.

The recently evolved notion of Arab-Francophonie refers to the geolinguistic, geopolitical synergy between the French-speaking communities in the North and the Arabic-speaking communities in the Maghreb and Machrek. In fact this synergy involves an uneven exchange in which French dominates. The French language, however, is facing its own challenge from globalization and information superhighways, where English overwhelmingly prevails. What are the implications of this struggle for Francophonie, in the North as well as the South?

Fouad Laroui puts forth a new model of relationship to the language, one that separates from the idealized notion of the mother- language couple (place of origin and tradition, allegorical figure of the colonized and humiliated country) that characterized the previous generation of writers from the Maghreb. In so doing, he puts a new focus on the issue of French as the «dominant language».

En 1937, l'écrivain guyanais Léon-Gontran Damas fait paraître son premier recueil de poésie, Pigments. La même année, Saint-Denys Garneau, poète québécois, publie Regards et jeux dans l'espace suivi, plus tard des Solitudes. Ces oeuvres se caractérisent par la recherche d'une modernité poétique déterrminée par un profond désir de liberté. Chez Damas comme chez Garneau, cette quête se déploie dans un imaginaire de la violence. Suivant une démarche comparative, cet article vise à étudier des formes et des fonctions esthético-idéologiques de cette violence à travers les textes poétiques susmentionnés des deux auteurs francophones.

Les Hommes qui marchent de Malika Mokeddem, née dans l'Ouest du désert algérien, est un hymne d'amour à tous les nomades. La protagoniste, Leila, transgresse tous les interdits que lui impose la société arabo-musulmane. Elle puise son courage dans l'oralité de sa grand-mère Zohra qui lui conte les pérégrinations des <>. L'école constitute l'autre planche de salut de Leila, mais aussi son premier exil. Des années plus tard, sous d'autres cieux, la parole archéologique de Zohra l'invite à s'écrire et à retourner aux sources; là commence la véritable libération de Leila.

La littérature, comme dit Louis Dubrau, c'est «ce qui permet de se venger de la réalité en l'asservissant à la fiction». C'est justement le cas d'Amin Maalouf qui, dans Léon l'Africain, est parti d'une histoire vraie pour réaliser une autobiographie imaginaire. L'article qui suit cherche à examiner comment l'écrivain a pu réaliser, à partir d'une relation historique entièrement authentifiée par des instances extralittéraires, une œuvre qui n'a d'existence que littéraire. En d'autres termes, comment il a réussi à rester maître du jeu narratif pour faire de l'écriture de l'Histoire une fiction romanesque.

Comme chez tous les peuples africains, la vie des peuples du Bénin en général est très fortement marquée par le sens du sacré. Cette réalité se traduit, dans le sud du pays, plus précisément dans l'aire aja qui comprend le Gun, les Fon, les Toli, les Ayizo, les Xwada, les Xwla ou Popos, les Aja eux-mêmes, les Waci et les Gen, par l'omniprésence des manifestations de la culture de ces peuples. Il va donc de soi que leur littérature en donne des représentations dont la présente étude se propose de saisir les contours et les variations.

La stature intellectuelle et littéraire de Mongo Beti fait de lui le contrepoint à partir duquel la notion même d'une tradtion littéraire camerounaise devient possible. L'émergence de Calixthe Beyala, écrivaine de la post-indépendance, permet de définir le réseau intertextuel qui donne cohérence aux tracées littéraires camerounaises. La ville cruelle et la tragique condition féminine sont les références qui traversent toute la littérature camerounaise, signalant l'identité irréductible de chaque écrivain, mais posant aussi les jalons d'un espace littéraire camerounais.
