The present article examines Le docker noir taking into account the narrative trajectory of Diaw Falla as well as the triangular relationship between Diaw-Catherine-Ginette which inscribes the novel in what we call a "double negative narrative". The narrative, through intertextual contamination with the story of Sirius, the slave trader, not only translates the separation/loss of Senegalese symbols and identity on the other side of the Atlantic, but also allows us to look at the novel as an indication of inequality, a place of sometimes impossible transmission and reconciliation with African historical memory through slavery. This article takes an analytical look at the Ousmane Sembène’s novelistic prose: precisely he proposes a poetic and stylizing reading of Le mandat. First grasping the textual structure of this classical work from dialogue, we show its characteristics (psittacism of the characters, polemical exchanges under apparent dialectical interactions, presence of epistolary exchanges). In a second movement, the enunciative heterogeneity laid bare enables us to confirm a cultural hypotext that deeply works on the Sembenian literary language, putting it on a popular invoice. How does a contemporary audience handle medieval queerness? What, exactly, constitutes medieval queerness, and how does the medieval literary genre of romance impact it? This thesis attempts to grapple with these questions, and many more, utilizing the 13th-century Old French romance Le Roman de Silence by Heldris de Cornuälle. Medieval romances are particularly fruitful for this analysis because, on one hand, the genre consistently re/turns to cisheteronormativity, and, on the other, because scholarship generally has not applied queer theory to the study of romance. Malgré la présence évidente et continue des références intertextuelles dans les romans de Mouloud Feraoun, celles-ci n’ont été que rarement étudiées. C’est notamment dans son troisième roman, Les chemins qui montent, que les renvois à la littérature orale de la Kabylie comme à l’œuvre romanesque et philosophique d’Albert Camus se prêtent particulièrement à une analyse approfondie. Ils révèlent la résignation profonde du protagoniste qui se refuse à la révolte métaphysique au sens camusien, révolte rendue impossible par la condition coloniale.

In this thesis, I attempt to explore the possibility of representing terrorism in literature by analyzing four literary works: Paris (1898), La Condition Humaine (1933), Nada (1973), and Khalil (2018). These four works depict four different stages of the development of terrorism from the late 19th century to the 21st century. I will use these literary works to analyze the relationship between terrorism and capitalist modernity.

Taking Ousmane Sembène’s internship with the Soviet filmmaker Mark Donskoy as its point of departure, this article traces the entanglement of Sembène’s early films with Soviet cinema. To this end, I will be focusing on the general context of montage and cinema of the Thaw, while giving special consideration to a short Soviet documentary film celebrating Senegalese independence. In particular, paradigms of Thaw cinema can be discerned in Sembène’s Borom Sarret, where they are coupled with the claim to cinematic dialectic, resulting in an active translation into African contexts. The role of sound is analyzed in five films by Ousmane Sembène, including his first films Borom Sarret (1963), Niaye (1964) and La Noire de... [Black Girl] (1966). The sounds weave an ensemble or “braid” themselves into the fabric of the film in accordance with a concept theorized by critic Trish FitzSimons. This specific nature of braided sounds reveals narrative elements by way of Sembène’s sound technologies and choices and thus invites spectators to enter into a dialogic community, or even a discursive community, with the filmmaker, his films, and other spectators world-wide.

The purpose of this text is to address questions surrounding institutionalization of African knowledge. By wondering what remained of him when his mother died and by explicitly asking historians to look towards Akometam, Mongo Beti forces his reader to reconsider the diagnosis of intellectual sterility applied to African societies “without literacy”. This article examines the ideological aspect of the representation of the rural environment in Mongo Beti’s works. It analyses the presuppositions or implicit ideas that underlie the fictionalization of the countryside in order to elucidate the author’s representation of the peasants. It comes to the conclusion that the idea of a new rurality put forward in Mongo Beti’s writing results from the author’s ambivalent attitude towards the peasants : even though he takes their side against the (post)colonial political and economic powers, he decries their cultural and technical backwardness.

The article is part of the work on media changes induced by digital technologies. He postulates that the offbeat editorial approaches of African pure players are part of an objective of legitimization and that the methods of digital writing integrate economic logics. This article examines the theoretical and practical interconnectedness that crosses fear, media and governing practices. It uses examples from African countries, especially Cameroon, to investigate the ways in which the media are instrumentalized to draw on fear of the Other in general and of opposition leaders in particular in order to support authoritarian regimes. Not only does it focus on the structural changes that lead to a more subtle media control in spite of an apparent liberalization, but it also further describes the discursive devices used to generate and perpetuate fear.

This article uses semi-directive interviews of a dozen media actors in Burkina Faso to examine the transformations of print journalism in the digital age. It reveals that digital technology does not fundamentally change the structure of the field. It rather keeps it in a sort of “in-between” journalism where traditional media routines combine with an appropriation of innovative practices both in the production of information and in its dissemination. That takes place in spite of relative contained economic crisis that makes this hybrid model possible.
