Cambodian Family Albums: Tian's "L'Année Du Lièvre", Angelica P. So
Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal
This article explores how Franco-Cambodian cartoonist Tian’s graphic novel, L’année du lièvre [Year of the Rabbit], represents second-generation postmemory in the form of, what I call, a “Cambodian family album,” or a personal-collective archive. The album serves to convey to subsequent generations: 1) the history of the Cambodian genocide, 2) the collective memories of pre-1975 Cambodia preceding the Khmer Rouge takeover of Phnom Penh, and 3) the Cambodian humanitarian crisis and exodus of the 1970s-1990s. The conceptualization of the family album is derived from the literal translation, from Khmer into English, of the term “photo album” – “book designated for …
Queer Displacements: Minorities, Mobilities, And Mobilizations In French And Francophone Literature, Thomas Muzart
Queer Displacements: Minorities, Mobilities, And Mobilizations In French And Francophone Literature, Thomas Muzart
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Focusing on the work of Virginie Despentes, Jean Genet, Guy Hocquenghem, and Abdellah Taïa, this dissertation challenges the antisocial turn taken in queer theory, by means of a parallel study of the authors’ geographical and intellectual itineraries. While critics like Leo Bersani and Lee Edelman have suggested that the revolutionary potential in queer identity lies in its opposition to romanticized forms of community, I argue, along with José Esteban Muñoz, that their praising of singularity and negativity is similarly extreme. Alternatively, my study shows how the geographical displacements both experienced and imagined by my primary authors can illuminate the passage …
Terre Brûlée : Une Éco-Poétique Du Vide, Pierre Taminiaux
Terre Brûlée : Une Éco-Poétique Du Vide, Pierre Taminiaux
20th and 21st Century French and Francophone Studies International Colloquium
Simultaneous Intersectionality In The Comics Of Catel And Sabrina Jones: Understanding Women’S Life Stories, Jeorg Ellen Hornsby
Simultaneous Intersectionality In The Comics Of Catel And Sabrina Jones: Understanding Women’S Life Stories, Jeorg Ellen Hornsby
Theses and Dissertations--Gender and Women's Studies
The project examines how the theories of simultaneity and intersectionality are useful in analyzing the lived experiences of the authors and their subjects. Specifically, this dissertation analyzes how French comic artist Catel and American comics artist Sabrina Jones use the medium of comics to recount their autobiographical stories within and alongside their biographical stories of Benoîte Groult and Margaret Sanger, respectively.
"The Politics Of Literature In Michel Foucault: Veridiction, Fiction And Desire", Azucena G. Blanco
"The Politics Of Literature In Michel Foucault: Veridiction, Fiction And Desire", Azucena G. Blanco
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
This article is based on two hypotheses. The first is that in the later Foucault we would find a reformulation of the status that literature had occupied in his work and the development of a politics of literature (already developed in “Sujetos irregulares: ficción y política en el Sade de Michel Foucault”). The second considers that fiction and desire are inseparably joined, which leads me to analyse the logic of Sade as logic of desire in the lectures that Foucault gave on the author at the University of Buffalo (1970). A reading of both aspects together needs to be …

When it comes to China and Africa, one thinks spontaneously of immensity versus mosaic, but one can also be fascinated by the rooting in the past. To create La legende des siècles, a French epic, Victor Hugo allowed himself to be carried by "history listened through the gates of legend", according to his own words. Imagine what would be the writing of The legend of the millennia for China and Africa, impressive asteroids launched in the sky of time? Thousand eyes scrutinize with their camera the interactions between the people of the great country and those of the African …

La Fermeture Des Salles De Cinéma En Afrique De L'Ouest Et Ses Impacts Sur L'Internet Et La Télévision, Mouhamadou Cissé
This article analyzes the importance of the film industry in West Africa by posing the problem of the closure of cinemas in recent decades in three countries: Senegal, Mali and Burkina Faso. The disappearance of movie theatres jeopardizes reception and drives the use of the Internet and television as broadcasting outlets for movies. This issue occupies little space in film criticism that privileges, according to Claude Forest, the "creative and cultural aspects" and therefore the aesthetics of African film.
The different North African cinemas, which appeared after the independences and were the work of film directors trained in Europe, were, as a principle, an art-house cinema at odds with the classical cinema type. Presented at festivals very often, they were not really embraced by the national audiences, who were mainly consumers of popular productions, either western or Egyptian. But the production of genre films (especially comedies) which were very rare until the 1990s is increasing today, at least in Morocco. Their arrival at the top of the Moroccan box-office where they compete with the American blockbusters prove that the …

The first television pictures appeared in Cameroon thirty years ago, proposing series for public consumption. These imported products later on suffered a singular competition from local artists, whose works were mostly broadcast on private channels, besides what was proposed by the single public media of Cameroon Television (CW). In this article, we intend to carry an ecocritical analysis on the aesthetic aspects of ten credit titles; we also bring out the formal process of producing movies; this is how we can identify hybridity through costumes, languages and scenery because they go beyond the local environment which they reveal to present …

Cinomade is an association that tries to sensitize the populations about the HIV pandemic in Burkina Faso. Télé Vaka, literally the "Neighborhood Television" in more language, was an itinerant local television around Koudougou in Burkina Faso. By comparing the reception of screenings organized in rural areas by Télé Vaka and Cinomade, this article describes a popular form of consumption of audio-visual images in West Africa. By causing the debate inside the communities using a heterogeneous device connecting endogenous (the chief's words, those of the elders, etc.) and exogenous (video projection and public testimony), ways of communication, this experiment modifies our …

Les Modes De Réception Des Films Populaires Africains Au Brésil: Entre Usage Socioculturel Et « Plaisir Du Texte », Mahomed Bamba

In this article, I discuss the uses and the reception of African films (popular films and films d'auteur) in Brazil, especially in some Mostras. I examine, among other issues, the role of these mini-festivals in the establishment of what we can call a popular African cinema experience in a community. These contexts of reception produce in the audience a level of expectation, but also some constraints that impact the films' reading and interpretation.
Michel Ocelot's film Kirikou et la sorcière became a great success as soon as it hit the screens in 1998. It even inspired a sequel, Kirikou et les betes sauvages, whose release in 2005 earned the figure of the small African boy a permanent place in a wider Francophone imaginary. Originating in a traditional tale, Kirikou et la sorcière is an adaptation and, as such, the result of a transformation. Indeed, it is the result of a two-fold transformation involving a transition from the oral to the written, on one hand, and from the written to the visual, on …

Good Game, Greyory Blake
Good Game, Greyory Blake
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis and its corresponding art installation, Lessons from Ziggy, attempts to deconstruct the variables prevalent within several complex systems, analyze their transformations, and propose a methodology for reasserting the soap box within the display pedestal. In this text, there are several key and specific examples of the transformation of various signifiers (i.e. media-bred fear’s transformation into a political tactic of surveillance, contemporary freneticism’s transformation into complacency, and community’s transformation into nationalism as a state weapon). In this essay, all of these concepts are contextualized within the exponential growth of new technologies. That is to say, all of these semiotic …

The research I have conducted for my French Major Senior Thesis is a culmination of my passion for and studies of both French language and culture and the history and practice of Visual Arts. I have examined, across the history of art, the representation of women, and concluded that until the 20th century, these representations have been tools employed by the makers of history and those at the top of the patriarchal system, used to control women’s images and thus women themselves. I survey these representations, which are largely created by men—until the 20th century. I discuss pre-historical …
