In 2012, the documentary film La Réunion : terre d’asile ou terre hostile was first screened at the Comorian International Film Festival (CIFF). The film, directed by Comorian filmmaker Saïd-Ali Said Mohamed, explores the experiences of Comorians on the island of Réunion, a Department of France in the Indian Ocean. It not only discusses the complex, interwoven histories and identities of the Comoros and Réunion, but the film itself is part of a broader movement to reclaim the representation of Comorians. Aujourd’hui, l’État et les médias français visent à réduire au silence les immigrés africains, ou bien visent à s’approprier leurs mots à d’autres fins. Néanmoins, le genre romanesque permet aux immigrés de prendre la parole, donnant un visage à la masse anonyme et menaçante des immigrés que montrent les médias français. Le ventre de l’Atlantique par Fatou Diome, Comment immigrer en France en 20 leçons par Luc Bassong et Debout-Payé par Gauz font justement cela. Resisting The Image: Heidi, Sheep And Swiss Trash, Jonathan Gosnell

The novel Swiss Trash, written by Dunia Miralles in 2000, interrogates stereotypes around immigration and nationhood in contemporary francophone Switzerland, with the intention of turning some notions on their head and letting others fester, uncomfortably. The French-language text underscores the divisions, the startling differences present within a seemingly perfect “Heidiland.” Its English title hints at complex and often equivocal cultural denotations extant within the Helvetic Confederation. A simultaneous reading of Swiss Trash and Heidi, of familiar Swiss citizens and intrusive immigrants, offers, this article contends, revealing visions of a dismal present/future and an idealized past. The importance of published accounts by African slave ship survivors is well-known but not their existence in large numbers. Fogleman and Hanserd catalog nearly five hundred discrete accounts and more than 2,500 printings of them over four centuries in numerous Atlantic languages. Short biographies of each African, print histories of the complete or partial life story. Five Hundred African Voices an invaluable resource for scholars, teachers, students, and others wishing to study transatlantic slavery using African Voices.

This article offers a reading of the status and image of women in the postcolonial context of Africa through Branle-bas en noir et blanc and Perpétue et l’habitude du malheur by iconoclastic writer Mongo Beti. The female figures of his novels allow him to decry the conditions in which women are forced to live, between colonial, patriarchal, matriarchal and religious subjugation. Is France Having A Populist Moment?, Emma Gilmore

Honors Theses

The word populism is often thrown around in news media and academic scholarship, but there is a lack of understanding of what it actually means as a political theory. In France, the two presidential candidates that made it to the second round in 2017, Emmanuel Macron and Marine le Pen, were both called populist, despite having vastly different campaign strategies and messages. This study used a computer-based method to analyze Campaign books from 24 candidates beginning in 1981 that determined that Populist language is on the rise, but not as aggressively as news media suggests.

This screenplay raises the ghosts of the Atlantic. Set in one of the haunted places of French colonialism, the fortress where Toussaint Louverture was deported by Bonaparte and died in 1803, the film summons the voices of Afro-French and Francophone authors. They call out to us from deep in the darkness; we are jolted awake, prompted to remember: between 1642 and 1848, France enslaved 4 million people, 1.5 million captured in Africa and 2.5 million born as slaves in the colonies.
