Introduction
Francois Mauriac avait abordJ sa carrière littéraire avec le sentiment d'un rôle spirituel à jouer au sein de sa génération. Le prix Nobel et l'Académie ont couronné le romancier qu'un public nombreux considérait déjà comme l’un des grands écrivains du siècle. Ce succès eût pu suffire à cet homme comblé si le destin de la nation ne l'avait pas fait passer du monde des rêves à l'effroyable réalité de deux guerres qui, à vingt ans d'intervalle bouleversèrent toutes les notions préétablies et secouèrent les illusions traditionnelles qui voulaient que la paix fut une résultante inévitable du progrès scientifique.
