Taking In

Taking In is a juried annual student-run publication that showcases the best of LUCAD undergraduate photography and video. The project focuses on the business of promoting art and culminates each year with a juried exhibition, publication, and website all designed to promote selected works of AIB artists. The selected pieces were chosen anonymously by a jury of distinguished members of the Boston art community. The book in your hand is the end result of a collective effort by those in the class.

Stephen Althouse was raised on a farm in rural Bucks County, Pennsylvania, where he earned a working familiarity with the land, animals, and the tools of farming. He went on to work in a stone quarry, on the railroad, and in concrete construction and road building. It comes as no surprise that, when he pursued his artistic studies and practice, he focused on sculpture – on objects and the human hands that make them. Rather than fabricate new objects that would embody his own labor, he chose to work with found objects that told the stories of others, and this …

School of Art, Art History, and Design: Theses and Student Creative Work

Through my project, Land/People, I investigate the decline of family farming and the emotional and spiritual issues that underly the human relationship to land. The exhibition combines aerial and large-scale panoramic photographs of my family’s farmland in eastern Montana with more intimate images of family members and domestic spaces. Through the use of multiple images, visual grids, and a repeated motif of windows, I tell a complicated story about history and land use, as well as the changing face of American agriculture. My art brings together materials and ideas inspired by personal experience that do not usually exist side by side. My body is the primary mechanism with which I make work, incidentally making me the subject matter of the work. I use my physical self as an instrument to coalesce and transform other materiality. Through live performance and photographic installations I create tension and balance between crude biology and bright, polished formalism. This body of work focuses on Millennial Feminism and the Middle East.

Artist Bio: C. C. Ann Chen is an artist and educator based in Chicago, IL. She was born in Taiwan, and grew up in suburban Maryland. Chen holds a BA in Architectural History from the University of Maryland, and MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Chen’s work stems from architecture and landscape, and explores perceptual translations and misinterpretations of place, time, and memory. Projects range from direct observation to site-specific ideas, following an intuitive, experiment-based approach in her studio practice. My artwork is my imagination reflected in the trappings of the Victorian era. The Victorian gaze comes from seeing a correlation between the social unrest in modern society and in the late nineteenth century. By basing the aesthetics of the tintypes in this thesis on the Victorian era, I am able to draw these parallels while at the same time making narrative statements about the feelings associated with being an outcast because of my sexuality. Artist’s Statement:

Snow Dune is from a series of work that I created during 2014-2015. This image was captured in the dunes at Duxbury Beach after a snowstorm. I am inspired to create artwork that shows the beauty of the constantly changing beach environments.

While I was creating this artwork, I overlapped multiple images using a Holga medium format camera with 120 Kodak Porta color film. When I overlap my images, this creates a depth in the image that cannot be captured in a single image. The images together create a sense of commotion, causing the viewer to take time …

This paper considers how the tradition of self-portraiture and alternative process photography can be used in conjunction with one another to perform the uncanny. I discuss the "uncanny" through three theoretical lenses: Sigmund Freud, Hal Foster, and Rosalind Krauss. I then go on to discuss how the "uncanny" has been used in alternative processes of contemporary work by examining Robert Heinecken and Joyce Neimanas. Finally by looking at Francesca Woodman's self-portraiture, I address how self-portraiture can be a type of performance and how this influenced my own series during my 2015 Fall semester. Fashion is a device with which the perception of one’s appearance is manipulated. It is a device that is used across all cultures to identify, symbolize, isolate, and appropriate. It is figuratively and literally woven into the fabric of humankind as a whole. Fashion has the ability to reinforce gender or create dissonance within it through androgynous silhouettes. It can express strength and confidence or emphasize vulnerability.
