Welcome to the first edition of Taking In: the best of aib photography. During this first year Taking In has gone through many twists and turns in order to publish a professional portfolio representing the quality work produced by students at the Art Institute of Boston at Lesley University. Along with the portfolio there will be a gallery opening this Fall presenting all of the published pieces in a professional setting. Photography can be a way of exploring abstract ideas visually. When I make a photograph, I feel as though I am giving the world a glimpse into my thoughts. I want to share the mystery of photography with others. The Buddha’s Shell series is part of my journey in discovering who I am as a photographer. This is my first departure away from documentary photography. Instead of using photography as a tool to record specific events and images of time, these images have enabled me to free myself and use the medium to facilitate my imagination.

This honours project is divided into two parts. Part one is the written thesis. Part two is the photographic component. Part one discusses some of the practices and discourses associated with 'documentary' photography. Some documentary practices and discourses of the past can be seen to be culturally divisive. These practices and discourses were based on being, white, male and European. This ideology and its discursive modes are in conflict with contemporary photographic practices and the relevant social and cultural theories that define it. The thesis defines the discourses and practices of the modernist and postmodernist documentary photographer. It highlights the …

Images Of Ruin: Decay In A Post-Industrial World, Juha Tolonen

This thesis will examine the significance of ruin and decay in today's society, particularly the sites of industrial ruin in a post-industrial environment. It will explore the ways in which sites of ruin have been used and represented by competing cultural interests in the past and present. A focus will be on the industry of photography and its effects upon our understanding of sites of ruin, revealing possibilities for change in our aesthetic awareness of these sites. I will also include a portfolio of my own images reflecting my views and interests on a decaying industrial landscape.

Alternative Spaces was a collaborative exhibit of 4 artists on a variety of subjects that acted much like workshops for the graduate students of the respective colleges that hosted them between the years of 1979-1980. The artist that were included in this workshop exhibit were: Dennis Adams, Michael Brewster, Steve Davis, Joan Jonas. Throughout the year of 1978 through 1979, came the collaborative project of four universities with 4 artists. The artists included in these workshop/exhibits were: Julia Heyward, John Mason, Mary Miss, and Elyn Zimmerman. This exhibit book documents the 16 projects undertaken by these selected artists. Funded partially by the National Endowment for the Arts the exhibits acted much like workshops allowing a presence of the artistic students to get involved and listen to the artists.
