Mouthful Idol, Claudia Dishon Dec 2008

Mouthful Idol, Claudia Dishon

All Theses

In my work, I create an imaginative realm as a means to structure chaos. This fictional realm is a place to manifest my perceptions of the world. In alignment with my world view, the pieces exhibit multi-faceted sprays of information meant to explain a more rounded picture of reality. Mental clutter becomes visual clutter when realized in my prints. Recognizable objects, animals, foods, herbs, and written text are layered to form compositions that function abstractly at a distance. A closer inspection reveals identifiable forms within the layers of color and shape.
Haphazard imagery receives the same attention and support as …

Nature Vs. Nurture, Renee' Noel Smith Jan 2008

Nature Vs. Nurture, Renee' Noel Smith

LSU Master's Theses

My work utilizes the metaphor of the family garden gone wild to represent growing up in a difficult family environment. The plants struggle in an environment that turns the typical, quiet backyard garden into a chaotic jungle. This body of work illustrates a variety of printmaking techniques such as mezzotint, silkscreen, drawing, and etching. The vibration and saturation of intense colors create imaginary plants that are highly illusionistic. The troubled environment is represented by the nocturnal background.

On Island: Women Artists of Monhegan is the catalogue from the University of New England Art Gallery’s July 26 - September 23, 2007 exhibition featuring works by 36 women artists who capture the essence of Monhegan Island and its role in the history of American fine art. Blood Work, Mack Gingles Jan 2005

Blood Work, Mack Gingles

LSU Master's Theses

The visual portion of BLOOD WORK is a record of my reconciliations with its parts: description based on the photograph, memory, and my concerns for abstraction. I am interested in the nuances of gesture as they convey meaning and evoke memory response. Though non-specific, the space surrounding the figures is emptied to accentuate their psychology. By adumbrating one reality and effacing another I attempt to transform the mundane into what I perceive as the uncanny.

A Tinker's Studio, Catherine L. Hudnall Jan 2005

A Tinker's Studio, Catherine L. Hudnall

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is meant to describe and explain a space in which one can imagine things necessary for making objects that wobble, squeak, clack, creak, crank in and out, open and close, light up, roll about and generally hurl themselves into creepy existence. It is also an endeavor to describe some objects having lately taken such a journey into being. These include (but are not limited to): a chess table for one, an examining table and tray, two workbenches, chessmen and women, creaky floorboards, stairs on wheels, a stool on wheels, and Monsters of various sizes and shapes.

Push And Pull, Tessa Ann Mouton Jan 2004

Push And Pull, Tessa Ann Mouton

LSU Master's Theses

“…motion means…passing through time and through space.” “Pushes and pulls seem to be the cause of motion.” - Richard Wolfson. “Push and Pull” is about exploring process. While trying to locate my form of expression and process, I rediscovered my mother’s form of expression and process – crochet. I decided in order to continue forward, I must explore the past.

True Image, Janet K. Link Jan 2004

True Image, Janet K. Link

LSU Master's Theses

A still-life is often the painted record of a complex arrangement of objects. My aim in making the visual portion of TRUE IMAGE is to turn this sort of still-life inside out. Rather than arranging a collection of objects and making a painted or drawn image of the set up, I made simple images of things and arranged them with actual objects into three larger tableaux. The subjects of the paintings and drawings are these: checkerboards, objects, portraits, and shadows. The subjects of the tableaux are work (LABOR), home (DOMUS), and church (ECCLESIA). Viewed as a whole the exhibition asks …

Drawing Of The Mind, Buddy Harper Jan 2003

Drawing Of The Mind, Buddy Harper

LSU Master's Theses

The rules of drawing I have described are an outline to my method of working. It is to be used like the rules of a game. The thesis paper provides the viewer the basic parameters for looking at my work. The body of work is produced like two people playing a game of chess. I establish the rules and then I develop the work in an investigative manner.

Francis Cunningham: Painting and Drawing

March 14 to April 5, 1989

Marsh Art Gallery

Introduction

Realism is an attitude toward life that affirms the beauty and significance of the visible world. Realism starts outside with the surfaces of things and travels inward to their meaning. Everything in this process has to do with selection. What has the object told a particular artist about itself, about its relationship to other objects and to the surrounding space?

In life one takes in things at a glance, but the artist looks at an object for hours, weeks, months, even years. Premier coup painting …

Mark Rhodes/Ephraim Rubenstein: Sculpture, Painting, and Drawing

November 29 to December 18, 1988

Marsh Art Gallery

Introduction

The art of Ephraim Rubenstein and Mark Rhodes is art about the human figure, born out of personal experience and nourished by the great tradition of the figure in western culture. Indeed, the persistence of the human form in art from prehistoric times into the 20th Century, demonstrates not only the infinite variety of interpretations and expressions possible through the body, but our consistent need for self-realization and re-creation through the figure. The particular pieces in this show convey a remarkable cumulative visual …

The Marsh Gallery takes pride in opening its 1987-88 season with the first Virginia exhibition of paintings and drawings by Janet Fish, acknowledged master of the contemporary still life according to art critic Gerrit Henry.

Introduction

It is with great excitement and anticipation that the Marsh Gallery presents this exhibition of Robert Birmelin's work, STREET JOURNALS. John Baldessari, The New Museum, New York, Wright State University Art Galleries Jan 1981

John Baldessari, The New Museum, New York, Wright State University Art Galleries

Exhibition and Program Catalogs

The wit, intelligence, irreverence, and breadth of knowledge manifest in John Baldessari's work have made it important to many others, artists and public alike. This is the first museum exhibition, however, to show in depth the work Baldessari has done over the past fifteen years.

When The New Museum learned that an exhibition of Baldessari's photographic works was being planned at the University Art Galleries at Wright State University, the two organizations decided to join forces. While the scope and nature of our respective exhibitions differed, we felt that by jointly sponsoring the catalog, more information about Baldessari's work could …

Art Institute of Boston (AIB) Course Catalogs

The Art Institute of Boston maintains, and always has maintained throughout the course of its long history, that the artist holds a unique position of responsibility in his society. Because the weight of his contribution is so widely felt in this age of the expanded media, the artist is expected to be not only innovator, but also arbitrator. The decisions which affect his life and his work influence a wide body of people who look to him for illumination.

Art cannot be taught as a development of certain visual talents separate from a larger awareness of life. The Art Institute …
