In Sainte Luce, southeast Madagascar, livelihoods are in a state of transition due to climate change, deforestation, shifting local economies and globalisation. Activities passed on by the ancestors are not sufficient to meet everyday needs. In 2012, embroidery was introduced by an NGO as an alternative to the ancestral process of reed-weaving due to declining reed populations. Embroiderers have now formed a 100-strong independent cooperative.

My PhD fieldwork (2017-2019) explored the multifaceted dimensions of change for these craftswomen. In addition to the practicalities of mastering a new craft, they have renegotiated collaborative working patterns, obligations to kin and ancestors, flows …

Racial injustice and social unrest have spurred support for marginalized communities, historically excluded from mainstream society's activities. Marginalized individuals may often feel powerless and experience societal discrimination and negative stereotypes resulting in diminished well-being (WB). Consequently, finding resources to promote well being in marginalized communities is paramount. One possibility is exploring the art of textile crafts (e.g., repurposing, knitting, crocheting, and quilting) to serve as a platform for rupturing exclusionary hierarchies and oppressive frameworks, fostering empowerment and community cohesion.

Climate change is leading to more intense and devastating wildfires that lead to tragic loss of life and property (Cal Fire, 2018; Sinco et al., 2023) and disturbing environmental impacts (OECD, 2023). The purpose of this textile design was to create an activist design that communicates the fear and anxiety felt by those impacted by wildfires. First-hand accounts of those experiencing wildfires were researched as inspiration for the textile design. Based on the accounts, a selection of wildfire-related images were cropped in irregular shapes, placed around the canvas, and blended evoking a sense of chaos and devastation. An image of …

In 2021, the United States Fish and Wildlife Service proposed 23 species for delisting from the Endangered Species Act due to extinction. I would like to present my redwork quilt, Mourning Lost Kin (23 Extinct), which honors each of these species. I plan to share my process from researching and sketching each species to the embroidering of each block and the over-all construction of the quilt. This paper examines the experiences of home-based women zardozi artisans in Bhopal, India, who use traditional embroidery skills to create fashionable products. It highlights the role of the traditional craft sector in promoting women's empowerment, enhancing economic well-being, and supporting sustainable development in the Global South. Through ethnographic research, including literature review and interviews, the study reveals the resilience of these artisans, many of whom come from low-income backgrounds with limited education. Public Patriotism, Silent Dissent: Women And The Making Of Senninbari In Wartime Japan, Mariko Nagai

During the early years of the so-called “Fifteen Year War” (1931–1945), Japanese women and girls created senninbari when men received draft notices to serve. Often worn around soldiers’ waists underneath their uniforms, these sash-shaped talisman were embroidered with 1,000 red knots, each knot made by a woman. In a time when the Japanese government censored dissenting voices against its militaristic and nationalistic foreign and domestic policies, this government-encouraged gesture of stitching senninbari became one of the few ways in which women could voice their personal protests within patriarchal gender expressions (良妻賢母 “good wife, wise mother”). Robert Rauschenberg suggested that any material has a “humanitarian reportage” or a history built into it, that opens art to the “strange and unpredictable” experience only comparable to everyday reality. Developing this idea, I will focus on the Jammers, a series of works with significant textile presence produced in 1975–76, and discuss how Rauschenberg’s relationship to textiles evolved from treating them as “materials” to recognizing them as cultural technologies. In 1975 he was on a fellowship in Ahmedabad, India, a period of intense experimentation.

Our process involved sourcing wool from US sheep and wool farms in lower income areas and hands-on textile development, and intersectional reflection. Being at a Hispanic Serving Institution, informed approaches to engage with concepts, such as the “zerosum paradigm” and “Solidarity Dividend” based on Heather McGhee’s NY Times Best Selling book “The Sum of Us.” It explores how racism affects intergenerational wealth among minorities. This paper will document the disappearing and under appreciated textile, and why are they no longer understood or valued. In Albania and in Albanian diaspora communities this textile has had different names in prewar, prewar Korçare dialect and now.

Wild clay is an abundant and diverse material that has a long history with both utilitarian and decorative uses. Since the industrial revolution, processed and manufactured clay bodies have become commonplace. However, there has been a recent resurgence in the use of wild clays in contemporary ceramic practices for the purposes of material connection, accessibility, and sustainability.

This thesis explores the abundant wild clays of Georgia including the sourcing, processing, testing, of these materials. It also shows examples of the portfolio of work that was created with this research.

Exploring The Efficacy Of Expressive Arts Therapy In Enhancing Emotional Regulation Among Adults Of Authoritarian Caregivers: A Scoping Review, Kevin Suwan

This scoping review synthesizes a decade of research on the role of Expressive Arts Therapy (EAT) in enhancing emotional regulation among adults raised by authoritarian caregivers. Guided by Arksey and O’Malley’s five-stage framework with the PRISMA-ScR reporting checklist, 43 peer-reviewed studies were identified across five electronic databases. The findings demonstrate that EAT, across five modalities (visual art, creative writing, music, dance/movement, and clay work), consistently fosters emotional awareness, strengthens distress tolerance, and supports the adaptive regulation of emotions. Multimodal and body-based approaches were especially effective for individuals whose early environments suppressed emotional expression. The review highlights EAT’s potential as a …

This qualitative study explores how Thai undergraduate students in Bangkok experience, express, and manage stress through short-form video storytelling, using an expressive arts therapy framework. This study aimed to (1) identify students’ sources of stress, (2) examine their coping mechanisms, and (3) evaluate how creating short-form videos supported emotional expression, reflection, and self-discovery. Fifteen participants (aged 18–24) created videos ranging from 30 to 90 seconds in length, based on the “The Hero’s Journey” narrative, alongside structured interviews and experience surveys. This study investigated the psychological effects of a one-day clay-based art therapy workshop on Thai office workers experiencing emotional exhaustion and reduced personal efficacy. The research aimed to assess the outcomes of the intervention in three key areas: emotional release, rediscovery of inner strengths, and reframed perspectives.A total of 30 participants were purposively selected from a Bangkok-based organization and assigned to either an art therapy group, which received the art therapy intervention, or a control group with no intervention. This pilot study investigates the symbolic selections and narrative themes emerging from Sandtray Therapy among Thai adults with and without depression. The study aimed to examine how symbol choices and storytelling could distinguish between the two groups, thereby exploring the potential of Sandtray as a non-verbal expressive tool for supporting psychological assessment. Thirty participants (15 diagnosed with depression and 15 without diagnosis) each created a sandtray scene using a standardized set of 298 miniatures, followed by open-ended narration. Quantitative analysis using t-tests and Mann-Whitney U-tests identified 16 symbolic items significantly more common among participants with depression. Thematic analysis of narratives …

งานวิจัยสร้างสรรค์ฉบับนี้มีจุดมุ่งหมายเพื่อศึกษาความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างกระบวนการสร้างสรรค์งานศิลปะเชิงหลังมนุษยนิยมผ่านร่างกายมนุษย์ โดยอิงจากประสบการณ์ตรงของผู้วิจัยในการเปลี่ยนแปลงร่างกายในแบบฉบับของผู้วิจัยเอง ซึ่งได้รับอิทธิพลจากสื่อร่วมสมัย เช่น โฆษณา ภาพยนตร์ และโซเชียลมีเดีย ที่มักนำเสนอภาพร่างกายที่แข็งแรง มีกล้ามเนื้อชัดเจน และสื่อถึงความสมบูรณ์แบบตามจินตนาการทางวัฒนธรรม ผู้วิจัยนำแนวคิดและทฤษฎีจากหลากหลายสาขา ทั้งด้านมนุษยศาสตร์ สังคมศาสตร์ และศิลปกรรมศาสตร์ อาทิ การกลายเป็น (Becoming) อภิมนุษย์ (Übermensch) แฟนตามาสโกรเรีย (Phantasmagoria) และแนวคิดไซบอร์ก (Cyborg) เพื่อวิเคราะห์อิทธิพลที่มีต่อการเปลี่ยนแปลงร่างกายเป็น A Work of Art ไปสู่ร่างหลังมนุษยนิยมที่ถูกควบคุมและจัดการผ่านการกระทำทางกายภาพและเครื่องจักรดิจิทัลโดยการประมวลผลที่ทำให้ร่างกายถูกทำให้กลายเป็นดิจิไทเซชั่น (Digitization) ในการสร้างสรรค์ผลงาน ผู้วิจัยใช้เทคนิคศิลปะดิจิทัล (Digital Art) ร่วมกับเทคโนโลยีโลกเสมือนจริง (Virtual Reality) ถ่ายทอดกระบวนการ “ก่อร่างสร้างร่างกาย” ที่สะท้อนทั้งมิติทางกายภาพ อารมณ์ และจิตใจจากฝึกฝนร่างกายของผู้วิจัย ภายใต้บริบทของโลกหลังมนุษย์ (Posthuman World) ที่เทคโนโลยีและวิทยาศาสตร์สมัยใหม่กลายเป็นเครื่องมือสำคัญในการขับเคลื่อนในการเปลี่ยนแปลง ควบคุม จัดการ และกำหนดความเป็นไปทั้งในโลกกายภาพและดิจิทัล ผลงานศิลปะนี้จึงไม่เพียงแสดงภาพของร่างกายที่เปลี่ยนแปลงไปเป็นข้อมูลทางดิจิทัลเท่านั้น แต่ยังตั้งคำถามถึงอัตลักษณ์ ตัวตน ร่างกายและพรมแดนระหว่างความเป็นมนุษย์กับเครื่องจักรในโลกยุคใหม่

ร่องรอยแห่งการดำรงอยู่ เป็นชุดผลงานศิลปะแสดงสดเชิงจัดวาง ที่สื่อถึงการเชื่อมโยงกันของความเป็นปัจเจกและความเป็นกลุ่ม ในแง่ของของความเป็นมนุษย์และสิ่งที่ไม่ใช่มนุษย์ โดยอาศัยทฤษฎีศักยภาพที่ถูกทำให้รู้สึก เป็นกรอบแนวคิดหลักในการทำวิจัย กระบวนการทำวิจัยเป็นไปโดยศึกษาค้นคว้ากระบวนการเกิดขึ้นของปฏิกิริยาตอบสนอง เพื่อสร้างชุดข้อความแห่งปฏิกิริยาตอบสนอง ซึ่งอาศัยระยะเวลาเก็บบันทึกตั้งแต่ปี ค.ศ. 2022 – 2024ชุดข้อความแห่งปฏิกิริยาตอบสนอง ถูกใช้เป็นฐานหลักในการพัฒนาไปสู่การสร้างสรรค์ชุดผลงานศิลปะจำนวน 5 ชิ้น ในรูปแบบที่แตกต่างกัน ได้แก่ หนังสือรวมเล่ม, ศิลปะจัดวาง ศิลปะซาวน์อาร์ต ศิลปะภาพเคลื่อนไหว และศิลปะแสดงสด ที่มีกระบวนการสร้างสรรค์อันเป็นไปเพื่อสื่อให้เห็นถึงการส่งผลกระทบซึ่งกันและกันของร่างกายมนุษย์ ธรรมชาติ ปัญญาประดิษฐ์ และความเป็นวัตถุ ผ่านการสั่งการและการถูกสั่งการ ทั้งนี้ กระบวนการทดลองและชุดผลงานดังกล่าวได้รับการเผยแพร่ ในเทศกาล นิทรรศการ โครงการศิลปินพำนัก ทั้งสิ้น 7 ครั้ง การเผยแพร่ผลงานในวาระที่แตกต่างกัน เผยให้เห็นถึง การเชื่อมโยงกันความเป็นปัจเจกและความเป็นกลุ่ม อันเกิดจากการที่ผู้แสดง ผู้ชม และวัตถุ ที่ปฏิสัมพันธ์ร่วมกัน มีการสลับบทบาทกันไปมา เกิดเป็นลูกโซ่แห่งปฏิกิริยาตอบสนองทางร่างกายที่มีต่อชุดผลงาน ในฐานะสิ่งที่ถูกทำให้กระทำ ซึ่งแผ่ขยายแบบทบทวีคูณเป็นวงกว้างในแนวราบ การเกิดขึ้นของแต่ละการกระทำ การแสดงบทบาท และการตอบสนอง ต่างสามารถเกิดขึ้นได้อย่างไม่มีลำดับขั้นตอน เกิดเป็นการกระทำร่วมกัน ที่แปรเปลี่ยนสิ่งที่ถูกทำให้กระทำ มาสู่สิ่งที่ถูกทำให้กระทำ ตามแต่เหตุปัจจัย ภายใต้ความเป็นไปได้อันหลากหลาย

งานวิจัยเชิงสร้างสรรค์ในหัวข้อ ศิลปะสื่อผสมจัดวาง : สภาวะการดำรงอยู่ของพญาแถน มีวัตถุประสงค์ เพื่อศึกษาความเชื่อเรื่องพญาแถน ในบริบทพิธีกรรมของสังคมชนบทอีสาน ผ่านการสร้างสรรค์ผลงานศิลปะสื่อผสมจัดวาง และเพื่อวิเคราะห์สื่อทางวัฒนธรรมอีสาน ที่ถ่ายทอดปรับแปลง และธำรงรักษาไว้ซึ่งความเชื่อเรื่องพญาแถน ผู้วิจัยได้ดำเนินการเก็บข้อมูลจากการสอบถาม และสังเกตการณ์ในพื้นที่ชุมชนอีสาน ที่ยังคงมีการสืบทอดพิธีกรรมความเชื่อเรื่องพญาแถน รวมถึงข้อมูลเอกสารทางวิชาการ แนวคิดทฤษฎี และผลงานศิลปกรรมที่เกี่ยวข้อง ทำการวิเคราะห์ข้อมูลแล้วทดลองสร้างสรรค์ผลงานจำนวน 1 ชุด ผลจากการทดลองสร้างสรรค์ นำไปสู่การพัฒนากรอบความคิดของการสร้างสรรค์ผลงานวิทยานิพนธ์ โดยการนำเสนอด้วยรูปแบบผลงานสื่อผสมจัดวาง จำนวน 1 ชุด ประกอบด้วยผลงาน 5 ชิ้น ผลงานที่เป็นวิดีโอ จำนวน 1 ชิ้น และสื่อผสม จำนวน 4 ชิ้น จากการวิจัยพบว่า การดำรงอยู่ของความเชื่อเรื่องพญาแถน ได้ก้าวข้ามเส้นแบ่งระหว่างความเชื่อและวัตถุ แต่แม้ว่าความเชื่อนั้นจะข้ามพ้น (Transcend) การรับรู้ในแบบเดิมไปแล้ว แต่กระบวนการของการกลายมาเป็นวัตถุภาวะ (Materialization) ผ่านการสร้างสรรค์ผลงานที่หยิบยืมรูปแบบของการเล่นแร่แปรธาตุ (Alchemy) ในผลงานสื่อผสมจัดวาง ที่มีการผสมผสาน ปรับเปลี่ยน (Transform) วัตถุสิ่งของ ได้ทำให้สภาวะของการดำรงอยู่ ยังคงปรากฏมีผ่านศิลปวัตถุ (Art Objects) ที่ผู้วิจัยได้สร้างสรรค์ขึ้น ท้ายที่สุดแล้วการมีอยู่ของความเชื่อและวัตถุทั้งหมด จึงสามารถถูกผลักให้ก้าวข้ามธรรมชาติและวัฒนธรรม (Beyond Nature and Culture) ปรากฏมองเห็น และสัมพันธ์กับเราในแนวราบผ่านผลงานศิลปะสื่อผสมจัดวาง

ดุษฎีนิพนธ์การประพันธ์เพลง จากถ่านไฟสู่ทองคำ นิทานพื้นบ้านล้านนาสำหรับวงเปียโนควินเท็ต เป็นบทเพลงลักษณะดนตรีพรรณาที่ถ่ายทอดเรื่องเล่าของทางภาคเหนือ ซึ่งผู้วิจัยได้แรงบันดาลใจมาจากนิทานพื้นบ้านล้านนาเรื่อง “แมงสี่หูห้าตา” โดยใช้แนวคิดและเทคนิคการประพันธ์เพลงที่จะถ่ายทอดอารมณ์ความรู้สึกและบรรยากาศ รวมถึงบุคลิกของตัวละครจากเหตุการณ์เรื่องราวตามจินตนาการของผู้วิจัย เช่น บันไดเสียงโฮลโทน การใช้โมด การคัดทำนอง การใช้ขั้นคู่ทรัยโทน การใช้กลุ่มเสียงกัด การใช้จังหวะขัด การปรับทำนองหลัก เทคนิคการทดเสียง เทคนิคการดีดคอร์ดของกลุ่มเครื่องสาย เป็นต้น บทเพลงมีความยาวประมาณ 30 นาที ประกอบด้วยบทเพลงย่อยจำนวน 5 บทเพลง ได้แก่ คำสั่งเสียของบิดา สัตว์ประหลาดสี่หูห้าตา ถ่านไฟร้อนและมูลทองคำ รางน้ำทองคำ และพระเจ้าพันธุมัติ

งานวิจัยเชิงสร้างสรรค์เล่มมีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาหาแนวทางและรูปแบบของ การสร้างสรรค์ผลงานนาฏยศิลป์ โดยได้รับแรงบันดาลใจจากความดั้งเดิมของโนรา ซึ่งเป็นศิลปะการแสดงพื้นบ้านของภาคใต้ที่กำลังเสื่อมคลายลงตามบริบทของยุคสมัย งานวิจัยนี้ดำเนินการในลักษณะของการวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพและการวิจัยเชิงสร้างสรรค์ โดยใช้วิธีการเก็บรวบรวมข้อมูลจากเอกสารที่เกี่ยวข้องกับโนรา การสัมภาษณ์ผู้ทรงคุณวุฒิ การสังเกตการณ์ภาคสนาม การวิเคราะห์ข้อมูลจากเกณฑ์มาตรฐานทางศิลปิน ตลอดจนประสบการณ์ตรงของผู้วิจัย เพื่อนำมาวิเคราะห์และออกแบบกระบวนการสร้างสรรค์ผ่านองค์ประกอบทางนาฏยศิลป์ทั้ง 8 องค์ประกอบ ได้แก่ การออกแบบบทการแสดง การคัดเลือกนักแสดง การออกแบบลีลานาฏยศิลป์ การออกแบบเครื่องแต่งกาย การออกแบบดนตรีและเสียงประกอบ การออกแบบอุปกรณ์ประกอบการแสดง การออกแบบพื้นที่การแสดงและการออกแบบแสง ผลจากการสร้างสรรค์ดังกล่าว ผู้วิจัยได้สังเคราะห์แนวคิดหลังการสร้างสรรค์ออกเป็นประเด็นสำคัญ ได้แก่ การคำนึงถึงประเด็นความดั้งเดิมของโนรา การคำนึงถึงประเด็นทฤษฎี ทางศิลปกรรมศาสตร์ การคำนึงถึงประเด็นการใช้สัญลักษณ์ในงานนาฏยศิลป์ การคำนึงถึงประเด็นหลักพื้นฐานของการสร้างงานนาฏยศิลป์ไทยแบบอนุรักษ์และการคำนึงถึงประเด็นความคิดสร้างสรรค์ซึ่งทั้งหมดนี้ ได้กลายเป็นองค์ประกอบสำคัญในการดำเนินงานสร้างสรรค์ผลงานชุดนี้ ทั้งนี้เพื่อตอกย้ำและธำรงไว้ซึ่งรูปแบบอันดั้งเดิมของโนราและยังเป็นแนวทางในการพัฒนาองค์ความรู้ใหม่ที่สามารถต่อยอดการประยุกต์ใช้ความเป็นโนราในบริบทของนาฏยศิลป์ร่วมสมัย โดยไม่ละเลยรากเหง้าทางวัฒนธรรมของสายตระกูลโนราในแต่ละภูมิภาค อันจะเป็นคุณูปการ ต่อการสืบสานและพัฒนาศิลปะการแสดงของไทยในระยะยาว
