We are inundated by a constant feed of media that responds and adapts in real time to the impulses of our psyches and the dimensions of our devices. Beneath the surface, this stream of information is directed by hidden, automated controls and steered by political agendas. The transmission of information has evolved into a spiral of entropy, and the boundaries between author, content, platform, and receiver have blurred. This reductive space of responsive media is a catalyst for immense political and cultural change, causing us to question our notions of authority, truth, and reality.

Syncretic Souvenirs: An Investigation Of Two Modern Indian Manuscripts, Madeline Helland

The objective of this project was to establish a provenance for two Indian manuscripts that were recently discovered in the collections at Scripps College. Based on their illuminations, script, and binding structure, I was able to conclude that these two manuscripts are Hindu religious texts created around the 19^th or 20^th century. To determine an approximate origin and the significance of these volumes, my research focused on the syncretism of religion, material history, and power dynamics in India. Their context was specifically framed within the history of manuscript construction and conservation.

วิทยานิพนธ์นี้เป็นการวิจัยดนตรีพิณตามแนวคิดพุทธศาสนาจากธรรมะเรื่องทางสายกลาง เพื่อนำไปสู่การสร้างสรรค์ทางดุริยางคศิลป์ไทย โดยค้นคว้าจากพระไตรปิฎกและหลักฐานต่าง ๆ รวมทั้งการสัมภาษณ์ผู้เชี่ยวชาญด้านหลักธรรม ดนตรีและการสร้างสรรค์ ผลการวิจัยพบว่า หลักธรรมทางสายกลาง "ทุกขนิโรธคามินีปฏิปทา" นั้น ปรากฏการใช้คุณสมบัติดนตรี "พิณ" เป็นสื่อในการอธิบายธรรมะ โดยข้อมูลดนตรีพิณสื่อถึง 3 นัยคือ (1) พิณในทางพุทธศาสนาจัดเป็นสัญลักษณ์แห่งการก่อให้เกิดปัญญา (2) พิณในทางความเชื่อจัดเป็นสัญลักษณ์แห่งเทพคนธรรพ์ (3) พิณในทางดนตรีเป็นลักษณะที่แสดงถึงคุณค่า ความงาม ความไพเราะ เอกสารและหลักฐานต่าง ๆ พบว่า เครื่องดนตรีพิณ "กระจับปี่" จัดอยู่ในประเภทพิณคอยาวเรียกชื่อตามแบบพิณลิวท์ที่ปรากฏในยุคหลังพระเวท ส่วนข้อมูลดนตรีพิณในพระไตรปิฎกพบว่า (1) ด้านความหมาย พิณมีนัยแห่งหลักธรรมโดยอุปมาจากสายและเสียงของพิณ (2) ด้านลักษณะพิณ ปรากฏรูปแบบฮาร์ป ลิวท์และโบว์ (3) ด้านบทบาทหน้าที่พบว่าพิณเป็นเครื่องทำทำนองและเครื่องทำเสียงโดรน ใช้ประกอบการขับร้อง ผลงานการประพันธ์เพลงในครั้งนี้เป็นเพลงตับเรื่องแบ่งทำนองออกเป็น 3 ส่วนคือ พุทธคุณ ธรรมคุณและสังฆคุณ โดยใช้กลวิธีการประพันธ์ตามขนบด้วยทำนองต้นรากที่มาจากบทสวดบาลีและฉันท์ในคัมภีร์วุตโตทัย อันมีความหมายสอดคล้องกับเรื่องราวทางสายกลาง รวมทั้งการใช้แนวคิดเสียงโดรน การประสานเสียงแนวนอน การใช้คำร้องบาลี การประพันธ์หน้าทับใหม่ ตลอดจนการสอดแทรกและรักษานัยแห่งหลักธรรมของทำนองต้นรากอย่างเคร่งครัด อันเป็นลักษณะพิเศษที่ปรากฏในผลงานสร้างสรรค์ครั้งนี้

ในปัจจุบันศิลปะสื่อใหม่มีบทบาทในศิลปะร่วมสมัยในประเทศไทย ทว่าในการเข้าถึงข้อมูลเกี่ยวกับศิลปะสื่อใหม่ในประเทศไทยนั้นไม่มีความแพร่หลาย คนรุ่นใหม่ที่สนใจศิลปะสื่อใหม่นั้นเข้าถึงข้อมูลได้ยาก มีช่องว่างในการรับรู้ข้อมูลศิลปะสื่อใหม่ การเรียนการสอนในระดับมหาวิทยาลัยส่วนใหญ่ไม่มีการเน้นย้ำหรือกล่าวถึง งานเขียนภาษาไทยไม่มีการจัดทำเป็นตำรา และงานแปลมีจำกัดหนังสือเพียงไม่กี่เล่มเท่านั้น เมื่อกล่าวถึงธรรมชาติของการหาความรู้ของคนรุ่นใหม่ที่สนใจศิลปะพบว่ากลุ่มคนดังกล่าวได้ใช้อินเทอร์เน็ตในการหาข้อมูลเป็นหลัก แต่น้อยที่จะมีความสนใจในเนื้อหาที่เป็นการเขียนที่มีรายละเอียดเยอะโดยเฉพาะข้อมูลภาษาอังกฤษ ดังนั้น จากแนวความคิดเพื่อออกแบบชุดความรู้ ลดช่องว่างในการเข้าถึงข้อมูลเกี่ยวกับศิลปะสื่อใหม่สำหรับคนไทยรุ่นใหม่ที่สนใจ มาสู่การวิจัยการทำความเข้าใจองค์ความรู้ศิลปะสื่อใหม่ นำมาสร้างชุดข้อมูลนำเสนอแก่กลุ่มเป้าหมายเพื่อเข้าถึงและพัฒนาองค์ความรู้ต่อได้ การออกแบบชุดความรู้ดังกล่าวได้ถูกนำเสนอผ่านนิตยสารอิเล็กทรอนิกส์มัลติมีเดียออนไลน์บนเว็บไซต์ที่มีชื่อว่าเทเลเอสเทติกส์โดยมีการกำหนดขอบเขตของงานวิจัยของงานวิจัยเผยแพร่ออกมา 2 ฉบับคือ เทเลเอสเทติกส์ฉบับที่หนึ่งเน้นไปที่การปูพื้นความรู้เกี่ยวกับศิลปะสื่อใหม่ ส่วนเทเลเอสเทติกส์ฉบับที่สองเป็นการนำต่อยอดองค์ความรู้จากฉบับที่หนึ่งและเน้นไปที่ศิลปะแห่งเสียงเป็นแขนงที่คาบเกี่ยวกับศิลปะสื่อใหม่ให้กลุ่มเป้าหมายเรียนรู้เนื้อหาดังกล่าว

การสร้างสรรค์นาฏยศิลป์จากความหมายนามเต็มของ "กรุงเทพมหานคร" มีรูปแบบการวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพเละการวิจัยเชิงสร้างสรรค์ ตลอดจนมีวัตถุประสงค์ศึกษาหารูปแบบแนวคิดหลังการสร้างสรรค์นาฏยศิลป์ที่ได้จากนามเต็ม"กรุงเทพมหานคร"และเพื่อศึกษาแนวคิดหลังการสร้างสรรค์ผลงาน อีกทั้งผู้วิจัยมุ่งศึกษาประวัติศาสตร์นามกรุงเทพมหานคร รวมถึงข้อมูลทางเอกสารและงานวิจัยที่เกี่ยวข้อง การสัมภาษณ์ผู้เชี่ยวชาญทางด้านนาฏยศิลป์ และผู้ที่มีส่วนเกี่ยวข้องกับงานวิจัย การสังเกตการณ์ ประสบการณ์ทางการสร้างสรรค์ผลงานของผู้วิจัย เกณฑ์มาตรฐานศิลปิน และสื่อสารสนเทศที่เกี่ยวข้อง สู่กระบวนการวิเคราะห์ สรุปผล และการนำเสนอผลของงานวิจัย โดยผู้วิจัยมีวิธีดำเนินการวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพและการวิจัยเชิงสร้างสรรค์ โดยสามารถจำแนกตามองค์นาฏยศิลป์ทั้ง 8 องค์ประกอบ คือ 1) การออกแบบบทการแสดง 2) การคัดเลือกนักแสดง 3) การออกแบบลีลานาฏยศิลป์ 4) การออกแบบเสียงและดนตรีที่ใช้ประกอบการแสดง 5) การออกแบบอุปกรณ์ประกอบการแสดง 6) การออกแบบพื้นที่สำหรับการแสดง 7) การออกแบบเครื่องแต่งกาย และ 8) การออกแบบแสง อีกทั้งสามารถจำแนกแนวคิดที่ได้หลังจากการสร้างสรรค์ผลงานได้ 7 ประการ คือ 1) การสร้างสรรค์นาฏยศิลป์จากความหมายนามเต็มของ " กรุงเทพมหานคร " 2) ความคิดสร้างสรรค์ในผลงานนาฏยศิลป์ 3) สัญลักษณ์ในงานนาฏยศิลป์ 4 ) ทฤษฎีทางด้านนาฏยศิลป์ ดุริยางคศิลป์ ทัศนศิลป์ 5) แนวคิดของนาฏยศิลป์ร่วมสมัย 6) การสะท้อนสภาพสังคมผ่านการสร้างสรรค์ทางนาฏยศิลป์ และ 7) แนวคิดของนาฏยศิลป์หลังสมัยใหม่ นอกจากนี้ผู้วิจัยได้นำองค์ความรู้ในหลากหลายศาสตร์เป็นพื้นฐานที่นำสู่การสร้างสรรค์ผลงานทางนาฏยศิลป์จากความหมายนามเต็มของ "กรุงเทพมหานคร" สามารถนำมาเป็นต้นแบบในการสร้างสรรค์ผลงานทางด้านนาฏยศิลป์ที่ผู้สร้างงานพิจารณาหรือวิเคราะห์จากความหมายของนามเฉพาะ เพื่อให้เกิดความเข้าใจในการการสื่อความหมายให้เป็นรูปธรรม โดยผ่านงานนาฏยศิลป์ อีกทั้งงานวิจัยในครั้งนี้ยังสามารถเป็นประโยชน์ในการต่อยอดองค์ความรู้ต่อไป

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of a single-session group music therapy songwriting session on grief processing in hospice clinicians. The study design was quasi-experimental. Participants were cluster randomized into a control group and a treatment group. The researcher led a 50-minute songwriting session focused on sharing and processing experiences of grief-related stress and burnout in hospice work. Grief processing was measured using a self-report survey for n=25. Overall differences between control and treatment groups were not found to be statistically significant. Significant differences were also not found in treatment score differences for type of …

I started gaining and interest in sculpture after seeing and learning about Frank Lloyd Wright and his use of natural materials integrated into planar and linear forms. I appreciate how he creates buildings such as Fallingwater, a home built for a family, where the structure is part of nature rather than intruding in on it.

The underlying feature between all of my work is the relationship between different forms that are integrated together. It is presented through the lens of an amateur archaeologist, navigating a chain of islands to search for ruins and artifacts. In part, the project is focused on the fantasy of an imagined world. The Niles-Merton Songs is a two-opus collection of twenty-two songs by John Jacob Niles setting the poetry of Thomas Merton. The songs are beautiful but contrast from his more popular works in poetry and composition. This project explores reasons why these songs are rarely performed, and gives an overview and analysis of ten selected pieces. The document includes a brief introduction, biographies of Niles and Merton, information detailing Niles’s compositional process, and the technical and artistic requirements for performing the songs, including appropriate age and voice type.

Guides to Manuscript Collections

The collection consists of over 2,000 pieces of original artwork used by greeting card and calendar companies, and spans the approximate years 1930-1990. Many of the pieces within the collection are labeled with a Norcross stamp or specifications sticker. The Norcross Greeting Card Company was founded in 1914 by Arthur Norcross and his sister, Jane, in New York City. They published greeting cards, and also sold wrapping papers and parchments. After Arthur Norcross' death in 1969, the business floundered and was sold for the first time in 1974. Subsequent sales saw Norcross combined with Rust Craft Company, but this venture …

My Eyes Due See is a multidimensional examination of the “black experience” in America. The installation is composed of a single-channel video, a music composition that utilizes music samples and live instrumentation, and sculptures made up of car parts and broomsedge grass. Each of these elements arranged in space share a nuanced and complicated view of blackness through the lens of a black man decoding personal history and American history simultaneously. Autonomy is the overarching theme throughout the work as it pertains to race, identity, urban and rural environments, and the relationship between generational trauma and nostalgia.

วิทยานิพนธ์ฉบับนี้มีจุดประสงค์เพื่อแสวงหารูปแบบนาฏยศิลป์ที่สร้างสรรค์จากตำนานนกกิ่งกะหร่าของชาวไทใหญ่ และเพื่อค้นหาแนวคิดที่ได้หลังจากการปฏิบัติการสร้างสรรค์ผลงานนาฏยศิลป์ มีลักษณะเป็นงานวิจัยเชิงสร้างสรรค์และเชิงคุณภาพ เครื่องมือในการวิจัย ได้แก่ การสำรวจข้อมูลเชิงเอกสาร การสัมภาษณ์ผู้เชี่ยวชาญ สื่อสารสนเทศ ข้อมูลภาคสนาม การสังเกตการณ์ผลงานสร้างสรรค์ทางด้านนาฏยศิลป์ การสัมมนา และประสบการณ์ส่วนตัวของผู้วิจัย โดยนำข้อมูลที่ได้จากการศึกษาวิเคราะห์ สังเคราะห์ การปฏิบัติการสร้างสรรค์ผลงานนาฏยศิลป์ และสรุปผล ตามลำดับ ผลการวิจัยพบว่า ในการสร้างสรรค์ผลงานนาฏยศิลป์โดยใช้ตำนานนกกิ่งกะหร่าเพื่อสื่อสารความเชื่อความศรัทธาของชาติพันธุ์ไทใหญ่กับพระพุทธศาสนา สามารถจำแนกตามองค์ประกอบการแสดงได้ 8 ประการ 1) บทการแสดงที่สร้างสรรค์ขึ้นใหม่โดยผสมผสานตำนานนกกิ่งกะหร่าของชาวไทใหญ่ และเรื่องชาติภพทั้ง 5 ของพระพุทธเจ้าในการกำเนิดเป็นนกกิ่งกะหร่า 2) นักแสดงมีคุณสมบัติในการเคลื่อนไหวร่างกายที่หลากหลายตามทักษะความชำนาญของตนเอง 3) ลีลาที่นำเสนอผ่านการฝึกปฏิบัติวิธีการแสดงแบบเดอะเมธอด (The Method of Acting) 4) เครื่องแต่งกายที่แสดงถึงบุคลิกภาพของนกกิ่งกะหร่าทั้ง 5 ตัว ตามแนวคิดเรื่องศีล 5 ข้อ 5) ดนตรีและเสียงประกอบที่ใช้ดนตรีพื้นบ้านภาคเหนือด้นสดกับสถานการณ์ในการแสดง และการขับเพลงพื้นบ้านภาคเหนือเล่าเรื่องตำนานนกกิ่งกะหร่า 6) อุปกรณ์ประกอบการแสดงที่เน้นการใช้ร่างกายเคลื่อนไหวร่างกายในรูปแบบต่าง ๆ ของนักแสดงเพื่อสื่อสารประเด็นสำคัญของเรื่อง 7) พื้นที่การแสดงที่กำหนดความหมายเป็นสถานที่ต่าง ๆ ในการแสดงได้แก่ สถานที่ไร้กาลและเวลา ป่าหิมพานต์ และท้องฟ้า 8) แสงที่ใช้แนวคิดทางทัศนศิลป์ และสัญวิทยาออกแบบเสียงให้ที่สามารถสื่อสารความคิดและสถานการณ์ของตัวละครให้เกิดความชัดเจน นอกจากนี้ ในด้านการสร้างสรรค์ผลงานนาฏยศิลป์ยังได้ให้ความสำคัญใน 6 ประเด็น 1) แนวคิดจากตำนานนกิ่งกะหร่าของชาวไทใหญ่ 2) แนวคิดเกี่ยวกับชาติพันธุ์กับอัตลักษณ์ของชาติพันธุ์ไทใหญ่ 3) แนวคิดที่เกี่ยวกับรากฐานความคิดความเชื่อและศิลปวัฒนธรรม 4) แนวคิดสัญวิทยา 5) แนวคิด การแสดงเดอะเมธอด (The Method of Acting) และ 6) แนวคิดทางทัศนศิลป์

ภาพยนตร์แอนิเมชั่นเพื่อบรรเทาภาวะวิตกกังวลในผู้ป่วยเด็กโรคมะเร็งที่ถูกเจาะเลือดในขณะเข้ารับการรักษาในโรงพยาบาล, วิศิษฎ์ ศุภางคะรัตน์

ปัญหาทางด้านจิตใจเป็นปัญหาที่พบบ่อยในเด็กที่เข้ารับรักษาในโรงพยาบาลเป็นเวลานาน โดยเฉพาะผู้ป่วยเด็กโรคมะเร็งเนื่องจากเป็นโรคที่มีความซับซ้อนในการรักษา และผู้ป่วยเด็กมักไม่ทราบถึงสิ่งที่ตนเองต้องเผชิญตลอดระยะเวลที่อยู่ในโรงพยาบาล โดยปกติเมื่อเด็กต้องเผชิญกับสิ่งที่ไม่ชอบ เด็กจะมีวิธีในการเผชิญหน้ากับสภาวะนั้นด้วยการเล่นสมมติ โดยจะจินตนาการว่าตัวเองมีพลังอำนาจ สามารถต่อสู้กับสิ่งที่ไม่ชอบได้ การศึกษาครั้งนี้จึงมุ่งเน้นที่การค้นหาวิธีการออกแบบแอนิเมชั่นจากภาวะวิตกกังวลในเด็กป่วยมะเร็งที่เข้ารับการรักษาในโรงพยาบาล ในขั้นแรกได้ทำการศึกษาถึงภาวะวิตกกังวลในเด็กที่เข้ารับการรักษาในโรงพยาบาลและประเภทของความแฟนตาซีที่มีความเหมาะสมในการนำมาใช้ จากแพทย์ผู้เชี่ยวชาญด้านจิตเวชและพัฒนาการเด็กจำนวน 3 ท่านพบว่า ปัจจัยที่ส่งผลต่อภาวะวิตกกังวลในเด็กป่วยมะเร็งที่เข้ารับการรักษาในโรงพยาบาลมากที่สุดคือ การถูกพรากจากบุคคลที่เด็กรักหรือคุ้นเคยและความกลัวต่อความเจ็บปวด รวมถึงการถูกทำหัตถการต่าง ๆ ผู้ป่วยมักเป็นเด็กที่มีนิสัยขี้อาย ปรับตัวยาก และประเภทของความแฟนตาซีที่มีความเหมาะสมคือ Visual Fantasy จากนั้นได้นำผลการศึกษาที่ได้มาออกแบบบุคลิกภาพของตัวละครและฉากในแอนิเมชั่น โดยมุ่งเน้นให้ตัวละครหลักเป็นผู้ป่วยเด็กโรคมะเร็งมีนิสัยขี้อาย ปรับตัวยาก อสูรกายที่แทนความเจ็บปวดจากการรักษา และ ฉากโลกในจินตนาการที่แทนภาวะวิตกกังวลในใจผู้ป่วยเด็ก จากนั้นให้ผู้เชี่ยวชาญด้านแอนิเมชั่นจำนวน 5 ท่านวิเคราะห์ถึงบุคลิกภาพจากตัวแปรที่กล่าวมาข้างต้นพบว่า คำสำคัญที่มีความเหมาะสมในการเลือกนำมาใช้ออกแบบตัวละครผู้ป่วยเด็กคือ Youthful, Casual, Friendly, Generous, Reflective and Elegant คำสำคัญที่มีความเหมาะสมในการเลือกนำมาใช้ออกแบบตัวอสุรกายคือ Large gesture, Addictions, Dynamic and Modern และคำสำคัญที่มีความเหมาะสมในการเลือกนำมาใช้ออกแบบโลกในจินตนาการคือ Classic, Dandy, Dynamic และ Modern

วิทยานิพนธ์ฉบับนี้ มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษารูปแบบและแสวงหาแนวคิดที่ได้หลังการสร้างสรรค์นาฏยศิลป์ที่สะท้อนเปลือกนอกของคนในสังคมไทย ด้วยวิธีการวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพและวิจัยเชิงสรรค์ที่มีการเก็บรวบรวมข้อมูลจากเอกสารทางวิชาการ การสังเกตการณ์ การสัมภาษณ์ การสัมมนา สื่อสารสนเทศ เกณฑ์มาตรฐานศิลปิน และประสบการณ์ของผู้วิจัย นำมาวิเคราะห์ สังเคราะห์ และสร้างสรรค์ผลงานนาฏยศิลป์ตามกระบวนการที่กำหนดไว้ ผลการวิจัยพบว่า การสร้างสรรค์ผลงานทางนาฏยศิลป์ครั้งนี้ เป็นการนำประเด็นเรื่องเปลือกนอกของคนในสังคมไทยเข้ามาเป็นสาระสำคัญในการออกแบบสร้างสรรค์รูปแบบการแสดงโดยสามารถจำแนกองค์ประกอบทางนาฏยศิลป์ออกเป็น 8 ประการ ได้แก่ 1) บทการแสดงนำแนวคิดมาจากการตีความประเด็นเปลือกนอกของคนในสังคมไทยทางด้านสังคมศาสตร์ วิทยาศาสตร์ และมนุษยศาสตร์ 2) นักแสดงมีความสามารถทางด้านนาฏยศิลป์และการแสดงอารมณ์ความรู้สึกแบบละคร 3) ลีลาการเคลื่อนไหวใช้ลีลาที่หลากหลาย ได้แก่ ลีลาละครใบ้ (Mime) ลีลาในชีวิตประจำวัน (Everyday Movement) ลีลาการทำซ้ำ (Repetitive Movement) และลีลาการเคลื่อนไหวที่แสดงอารมณ์แบบละคร (Acting) 4) เครื่องแต่งกายคัดเลือกจากเสื้อผ้าในชีวิตประจำวัน ได้แก่ เครื่องแต่งกายที่เรียบง่าย (Simplicity) และเครื่องแต่งกายที่เป็นเครื่องแบบ (Uniform) 5) อุปกรณ์ประกอบการแสดงเน้นความเรียบง่าย โดยนำเสนอผ่านการใช้สัญลักษณ์เพื่อสื่อความหมายตรงและความหมายแฝง ได้แก่ หน้ากาก แท่นแสดงสินค้า (Display) และเก้าอี้ 6) เสียง เป็นการใช้ความเงียบเพื่อให้ความสำคัญกับภาพและลีลาการเคลื่อนไหว เสียงจากบทพูดของนักแสดง เสียงประกอบเรื่อง และเสียงสังเคราะห์จากเครื่องอิเล็กทรอนิกส์ 7) แสงใช้ในการสื่อความหมายเชิงสัญลักษณ์ เสริมอารมณ์ความรู้สึกและบรรยากาศ ตลอดจนใช้แสงสร้างพื้นที่การแสดงบนเวที และ 8) พื้นที่การแสดงใช้สถานที่ภายในโรงละคร นอกจากนี้แนวคิดที่ได้หลังการสร้างสรรค์นาฏยศิลป์ที่สะท้อนเปลือกนอกในสังคมไทย ปรากฏแนวคิดที่สำคัญ 7 ประการ ได้แก่ 1) การคำนึงถึงเปลือกนอกในสังคมไทย 2) การคำนึงถึงแนวคิดนาฏยศิลป์หลังสมัยใหม่ 3) การคำนึงถึงความคิดสร้างสรรค์ 4) การคำนึงถึงสัญลักษณ์ในงานนาฏยศิลป์ 5) การคำนึงถึงทฤษฎีทางด้านทัศนศิลป์ 6) การคำนึงถึงการสร้างสรรค์ผลงานศิลปะเพื่อศิลปะ และ 7) คำนึงถึงความเรียบง่ายในงานนาฏยศิลป์ การวิจัยครั้งนี้จึงเป็นการรวบรวมองค์ความรู้ เชื่อมโยงประสบการณ์และพัฒนากระบวนการสร้างสรรค์ให้เกิดประโยชน์ต่อวงการวิชาการและวงการนาฏยศิลป์ ตลอดจนเป็นแนวทางในการสร้างสรรค์ผลงานของผู้สร้างสรรค์ผลงานในอนาคต

Nature’s Prototypes is an ongoing narrative series that blends realism and fiction to create both dialectic plot structures and image sets. For substance, the series utilizes biological inquiries into fields, like ecology, pathology, and bioengineering, to imagine action-centric vignettes, where animalistic to monstrous characters become the predominant actors in a post-dystopian worldscape. This paper explores the historical and contemporary situation of waterways in Los Angeles. It examines the birth and growth of metropolitan LA and contrasts this narrative with the current and pressing issues of drought and gentrification. This contrast raises the question of the sustainability of human growth in resource-scarce regions. From this analysis it forwards a nuanced perspective of the hypothesis that the dynamics of environmental degradation in the LA region threaten human growth. In her landmark works The House of Mirth (1905), The Custom of the Country (1913), and The Age of Innocence (1920), Edith Wharton responds to earlier depictions of the classical, pure Victorian and Edwardian woman. Wharton's "inconvenient" women overturn popular stereotypes. Subsequently, they are barred from their social groups, but they are independent, unlike the complicit and obedient women of the classical body, most of whom ascribe to the trope of the "Angel in the House."
