Printed Pattern The Study Of Pattern Through Ancient Egyptian Art, Michelle Sorensen, Adrian Pulfer Aug 2013

Printed Pattern The Study Of Pattern Through Ancient Egyptian Art, Michelle Sorensen, Adrian Pulfer

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Pattern design is widely popular and used throughout the world. Patterns have also been used since the beginning of time. They can be seen in blankets, clothing, rugs, and paintings throughout history. For my study of patterns I looked to an unusual resource—ancient Egypt. Egypt has had immense influence in the modern world, from architecture to fashion. But I wanted to look at Egyptian art with the focus of patterns and the purpose behind their use. Was there calculated purpose behind the use of patterns? Or were they used to merely fill up space? Did the Egyptians have a unique …

“Vanth And Child”: An Investigation Of The Mislabeled Etruscan Urn Mother And Child, Cassandra Scheerer, Dr. Mark Johnson Aug 2013

“Vanth And Child”: An Investigation Of The Mislabeled Etruscan Urn Mother And Child, Cassandra Scheerer, Dr. Mark Johnson

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Since its discovery in Chianciano, Etruria, the identification of the figures in the Etruscan cinerary urn Mother and Child (Fig.1) as a mourning mother holding her deceased child has gone uncontested. Reasons for this include the fact that the inscriptions do not identify the figures and the pose seems to logically fit that of a mourning mother with her dead child laid across her lap. The inconsistency of this “Mother” with other portrayals of Etruscan mothers and goddesses with children, led me to dispute the accuracy of the title of the work.

Sacred Architecture: How Where We Worship Tells About What We Worship, Carly Hyatt, Val Brinkerhoff Aug 2013

Sacred Architecture: How Where We Worship Tells About What We Worship, Carly Hyatt, Val Brinkerhoff

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Through my ORCA project and working closely with a mentoring professor, I have learned much more than how to conduct effective research. I was able to explore a passion of mine, religious architecture, in a very unique setting. Originally, my plan was to go to Italy and evaluate the effects of traditional styles on the modern Italian society. Early in the planning stages, we encountered difficulties with housing and travel logistics, and I had my first lesson in flexibility. My mentor, Professor Brinkerhoff, and I looked for new directions, and settled on looking at the effects of traditional styles on …

Rudolf Laban’S Space Harmony And Sacred Geometry Principles Applied To Ballet Methodology, Chanel Smith, Shani Robison Aug 2013

Rudolf Laban’S Space Harmony And Sacred Geometry Principles Applied To Ballet Methodology, Chanel Smith, Shani Robison

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Sacred Geometry is the study of the symbolic meanings within harmonic shapes found in nature. These shapes can also be called the Platonic Solids which follow the Fibonacci Sequence known as the Golden Ratio (Fig 1). These aspects of Sacred Geometry have been studied for centuries. Civilizations and individuals who have studied these includes the Egyptians, Greeks, Leonardo da Vinci, Fibonacci and even modern day architects. Rudolf Laban also used these shapes to create a series of movement scales in the 1920’s (Fig 2). He called these shapes crystalline forms which he felt not only expanded human movement potential, but …

Intergenerational Daci Utah Day Of Dance: “So…We Think You Can Dance!!!”, Heather Gemperline, Marilyn Berrett Aug 2013

Intergenerational Daci Utah Day Of Dance: “So…We Think You Can Dance!!!”, Heather Gemperline, Marilyn Berrett

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Today’s educational climate emphasizes test scores, often resulting in children sitting still in their seats. However, research shows that children are kinesthetic learners and that being involved in dance can improve the academic scores that society values so much. Anne Green Gilbert, an internationally renowned researcher and dance educator, asserts that dance “develop[s] neural pathways through movement patterning that are essential to language acquisition, reading readiness, and mathematical ability”. Her research further shows that “perceptual/motor ability is related to the acquisition of more complex [cognitive and social] skills.”

He Walked The Americas: John 10:16, America Chumpitaz, Adrian Pulfer

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The legends of the white God surrounded me as I was growing up. In school I learned in Peruvian History class that more than a legend or a myth is a story that it is passed from generation to generation. The White God or Viracocha, , Kukulkan, Quetzalcoatl and Gucumatz according to the people is a real God that lived among them many years ago. He healed the sick, walked on waters and taught them principles of love and peace.

Harmony Through Movement How T’Ai Chi Connects With Dance, Shannon Stead, Caroline Prohosky Aug 2013

Harmony Through Movement How T’Ai Chi Connects With Dance, Shannon Stead, Caroline Prohosky

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Harmony and balance are critical for health and well-being. Many contemporary dance practitioners and advocates have long recognized the importance of integrating somatics (mindbody connective practices) into their art in order to help dancers find connections and harmony within their bodies and minds. As dancers explore connections within themselves, they find a connection with the world and a better understanding and appreciation of it. Because of the fastpaced western lifestyle that many people live, there is an abundance of stress and disjunction where the body and mind are concerned. Somatics has been known help dancers. Additionally, studying eastern practices such …

Playing With Fire, Natalie Tripp, Robert Walz Aug 2013

Playing With Fire, Natalie Tripp, Robert Walz

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Playing with Fire is a documentary I started working on in the spring of 2010 after meeting Brigham Young University faculty member Dr. Jani Radebaugh. Dr. Radebaugh is a phenomenal geologist and is known around the world for her work in planetary geology, particularly for her studies of volcanic activity in our solar system. Lately, Radebaugh has focused her research on the volcanoes of Io, a moon of Jupiter and the most volcanically active body in our solar system. As Radebaugh watches the volcanic activity on Io, she believes she is more capable of understanding what early Earth looked like …

Facebook Users’ Perceptions Of Businesses’ Facebook Pages, Nicole Goring, Dr. Steven Thomsen Aug 2013

Facebook Users’ Perceptions Of Businesses’ Facebook Pages, Nicole Goring, Dr. Steven Thomsen

Journal of Undergraduate Research

College students in the United States and New Zealand were surveyed about their Facebook usage patterns, attitudes toward businesses’ pages on Facebook, and factors that could motivate them to join a business’s Facebook page. Several studies have researched businesses’ perspectives on using social media to reach their audiences, but substantial research has not been conducted to investigate social media users’ perspectives on businesses’ uses of social media. This study attempts to address this gap in the research on businesses’ uses of social media, using Facebook as the social media medium, and also discuss implications for future research. Significant findings of …

Community Magazine, Kevin C. Pinegar, Adrian Pulfer

Journal of Undergraduate Research

When I enrolled in Brigham Young University, I had decided that “for the sake of education” I would give up art and culture for a few years and live in Provo. I was naive back then: I thought that BYU would be a place that discouraged creative outlets and art all together. I was ready to study business at the Mariott School and save art for the weekends of the rest of my life.

Sarajevo: A Photographic Collection Of The City 15 Years After The Genocide Has Ended, Christine Armbruster Aug 2013

Sarajevo: A Photographic Collection Of The City 15 Years After The Genocide Has Ended, Christine Armbruster

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Winding through the streets of Sarajevo, I am a voyeur. Sarajevo is a city of layers, and with the discovery of each came a deeper understanding. As I dug deeper into basements where it is heard that your hair turns gray overnight, I began to know the city just a little bit more. I progressively mapped which bars stayed open just a littler later than the last, gradually going from one place to the other until the first shop again opened at 5am, and avoided having to hail a taxi home during the unoperating hours of the tram and not …

Creating A Culturally Sensitive Art Educator In The Ural Mountains, Julia Baker, Sharon Gray Aug 2013

Creating A Culturally Sensitive Art Educator In The Ural Mountains, Julia Baker, Sharon Gray

Journal of Undergraduate Research

As stated in my proposal, the overarching goal of this research is to assess how investing time, energy, and talents in improving the physical attributes of a special needs childcare institution in Russia will help art education student teachers become more well rounded, and sensitive educators and artists. I was able to accomplish this by examining my previous trip there, and taking that experience and turning it into a humanitarian effort to help enrich the lives of others, thereby enriching my own life and enhancing my ability to make meaningful art. During my trip to Russia last year I met …

Preservation Of Culture: Documentary Of Ethnic Contrast In Ecuador, Brandon Farmer, Jonathan Frioux, Dr. Mark Magleby

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Cultural diversity and its preservation are greatly influenced by today’s ever-changing world. With advances in technology, content and information from the more rapidly changing modern world can reach nearly any culture on the globe. Each and every community experiences changes over time, but the idea of globalization and modernization is now reaching many more communities than ever before, and consequently is causing more rapid change than ever before. Some of these more specific external influences are pop culture, tourism, and mass media. Our main purpose was to explore the importance of culture and its preservation. We were also interested in …

Recreating And Simulating Digital Costumes From A Stage Production Of Medea, Anuradha Pinisetty Aug 2013

Recreating And Simulating Digital Costumes From A Stage Production Of Medea, Anuradha Pinisetty

All Theses

This thesis investigates a technique to effectively construct and simulate costumes from a stage production Medea, in a dynamic cloth simulation application like Maya's nDynamics. This was done by using data collected from real-world fabric tests and costume construction in the theatre's costume studio. Fabric tests were conducted and recorded, by testing costume fabrics for drape and behavior with two collision objects. These tests were recreated digitally in Maya to derive appropriate parameters for the digital fabric, by comparing with the original reference. Basic mannequin models were created using the actors' measurements and skeleton-rigged to enable animation. The costumes were …

3d Fractal Flame Wisps, Yujie Shu

All Theses

This thesis presents a method for integrating two algorithms, fractal flames and wisps, to create visually rich and interesting patterns with 3D volumetric structure. Twenty-one single 3D flame variations are described and specified. These patterns were used to produce an aesthetically designed animation, inspired by both Hubble Telescope photographs and data from a simulation of a predicted collision between the Milky Way and Sagittarius galaxies. The thesis also describes Python tools and a Houdini pre-visualization pipeline that were developed to facilitate the animation design and production.

Pronoun Production Order In A Gender-Neutral Language: A Single Case Study Of A Typically Developing Indonesian Child, Bernard A.J Jap

Paradigma: Jurnal Kajian Budaya

Research in children with normal language development has shown that there is a certain order in the production and learning of pronominal forms. To one’s knowledge, there has yet to be a study on the pronoun development of Indonesian speaking children whose native language do not distinguish between the nominative-accusative form (e.g. in English, I/me – Indonesian, saya/saya) and at the same time being gender neutral (e.g. in English, he/she – Indonesian, dia/dia). The present study follows the personal pronoun development of a (Jakarta) Indonesian-speaking child from 24 months to 46 months of age.

Code-Mixing Among Students Of English Literature 2009 In Universitas Indonesia, Andari Ditya Jul 2013

Code-Mixing Among Students Of English Literature 2009 In Universitas Indonesia, Andari Ditya

Paradigma: Jurnal Kajian Budaya

People today are more globalized than before, and most of them are now able to speak more than one language. It also happens among the English Literature students 2009 in Universitas Indonesia who are able to speak English in their daily conversation. This may lead to the phenomenon called code- mixing. However, this code-mixing focuses more on written communication in their social media’s status. There are two major points that this paper attempts to make. First, the description of code- mixing itself according to the theory given by Wardhaugh (1986) and Hoffman (1991) and how it can be reflected into …

Fulla conveys some values about Eastern culture and about the new concept of women’s beauty which are different from Barbie. Fulla’s appearance here is thought can emphasize the cultural differences among the society, but it can give another choice to shape people’s new thought about the beauty …

More, Sihoon Kim Jul 2013

More, Sihoon Kim

Theses

Most people desire to succeed. Even though every person may have a different standard of success, it is necessary to succeed in order to be satisfied with our lives. We also need to value our experiences. For example, a concept called the "10,000 hours rule" has been introduced in a book titled Outlier. According to this concept, anyone can excel at something if he or she chooses to spend 10,000 hours on it. Actually, one should not just spend this time but use it to be passionately and actively involved. The Beatles embodied such commitment. Before they became famous, they …

Andrew Bae Interview, Richard Park Jul 2013

Andrew Bae Interview, Richard Park

Asian American Art Oral History Project

Bio: While Andrew Bae is situated in Chicago, he has clients from all over the globe. Born and raised in Seoul, South Korea, Andrew Bae picked up on the business of galleries after attending school and studying chemistry and worked as a chemist for several years. Although his gallery is in one of the more desirable locations of River North, he doesn't seem to carry that many artists. He prefers a limited selection of artists (around 10) as he feels there is more personal connection with his artists especially as a gallery owner. Though the business is changing, Andrew Bae …

Goldfield Studies, Dawn Roe

Faculty Publications

The dialogue within this essay serves as a response to the series, Goldfield Studies, a work itself prompted by the history and landscape of this eponymous region of Victoria, Australia. The imagery produced takes the form of paired and multiple still photographs and a digital video sequence, displayed in triple-projection. The discussion is framed by the artist’s introduction, which defines the project as a critical consideration of cultural memory in relation to the opposing perspectives of indigenous and colonial settler narratives, pastoral landscape representations, folklore and myth. A collaborative dialogue between an artist and art historian who share common research …

The Face Of Autism, Sarah Alger, Paul Adams

Journal of Undergraduate Research

I believe the best documentary photographs are those that evoke emotion and motivate people to take action. Although the Face of Autism project has only been displayed a few times so far, it has done both of these things. Furthermore, a website is currently being created to display the photographs and I am working on displaying the prints in more public galleries in the future.

Perception Of Forgery According To The Role Of Art, Courtney Mcwhorter, Dr. Martha Peacock Jun 2013

Perception Of Forgery According To The Role Of Art, Courtney Mcwhorter, Dr. Martha Peacock

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Originally, when I set out to begin this project my intent was to show ‘Art Forgery as an Art Form’, as the title of this project was originally called. However, the intent of my research was very broad, as I intended to discuss forgery’s role, its creation, the forger, and the merits of forgery. I soon realized that there was too much that needed to be said. Therefore, I decided to concentrate my efforts on the role of forgery, or its perception within the art world. In my research, I began noticing that the reception of forgeries has changed over …

Small Utah Towns, Christine Armbruster, Dr. James Swensen Jun 2013

Small Utah Towns, Christine Armbruster, Dr. James Swensen

Journal of Undergraduate Research

While obtaining my Bachelor of Fine Art, I spent a lot of my time during those six years of school running away. First finding the need to get out of Provo, then Utah, and eventually America. It resulted in a lot of adventures, stories, and long drives. It was during these long drives that I consistently ran into each one of these small Utah towns, classically consisting of a corner store, a post office, and a child being pulled on a radio flyer. One after another after another. Slow down to 30 and watch the old signs from shops past …

Portrait Of A Tree: Exhibit A, Hannah Wertz, Sunny Taylor Jun 2013

Portrait Of A Tree: Exhibit A, Hannah Wertz, Sunny Taylor

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Exhibit A is an explanation in four parts, of my attempt at knowing more about the Populus Tremulus (Aspen Tree). Eighteen months ago my experiments started shallow by painting portraits of the tree as seen in “Level One”. After six months the results were not leading my beyond surface physicality so I decided to try science. I represented this period by a white board, “Level Two”, covered in with written information about the tree collected over the last year from books, lectures, articles, professionals, botany, and environmental literature classes.
