Shaping Identity: Male And Female Interactions In Cinema, Jonette Lauren Lagamba
Shaping Identity: Male And Female Interactions In Cinema, Jonette Lauren Lagamba
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
ABSTRACT
Since the inception of cinema, women have been portrayed with the typical identities of emotionally and physically weak characters; this portrayal led to their subsequent dependence on men. Men were usually the protagonists and/or the heroes, following their archetypal journey. Thus, women's position in early cinema was to exemplify what men were not, placing the former in the diminutive position of the Other. One may conclude that men were often defined by what women lacked, and the women were defined by their relationships with these heroic men. As time progressed in the history of cinema, women's images retained part …
Narrative In Live Visual Performance, Henry Lenz
Narrative In Live Visual Performance, Henry Lenz
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
For purposes of this thesis, live visual performance is defined as the accompaniment of music using projected or televised visual stimuli to achieve a supplemental interpretation of the music to tell its 'story' in a visual way. In my research I have found that, while complex narrative in a song can be conveyed through various means, the attention span of those listening and watching in a club setting is not conducive for patrons to sit down and engage in watching the visuals for a protracted period of time. Most patrons are dancing and socializing and do not choose to watch …

“I Hope You Never See Another Day Like This”: Pedagogy & Allegory In “Post 9/11” Video Games, Marc A. Ouellette
“I Hope You Never See Another Day Like This”: Pedagogy & Allegory In “Post 9/11” Video Games, Marc A. Ouellette
English Faculty Publications
Although critics and scholars have considered the extent to which the terror attacks of 11 Sept. 2001 influenced subsequent media productions, video games comprise a largely unexamined form. This oversight also applies to related forms of media production and among those who study video games is in part attributable to the ongoing debate regarding the relationship(s) between narrative and play. Even so, as early as 1997, JC Herz was investigating the role of video games in the military-entertainment complex. That said, the focus of this paper will not be the obvious games which draw settings and plots directly from the …
A Prototype For Narrative-Based Interactivity In Theme Parks, Kirsten Kischuk
A Prototype For Narrative-Based Interactivity In Theme Parks, Kirsten Kischuk
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this thesis is to look at the potential for interactive devices to enhance the story of future theme park attractions. The most common interactive theme park rides are about game-based interaction, competition, and scoring, rather than about story, character, and plot. Research into cognitive science, interactivity, narrative, immersion, user interface, theming and other fields of study illuminated some potentially useful guidelines for creating compelling experiences for park guests. In order to test some of these ideas, an interactive device was constructed and tested with study subjects. Each study subject watched a video recording of an existing theme …
Review Of Screenplay: Cinema/Videogames/Interfaces, By Geoff King And Tanya Krzywinska, Marc Ouellette
Review Of Screenplay: Cinema/Videogames/Interfaces, By Geoff King And Tanya Krzywinska, Marc Ouellette
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
[First paragraph]
Recognizing the growing importance (at least for consumers) of video games as a popular form of narrative fiction, Geoff King and Tanya Krzywinska situate their collection, ScreenPlay: cinema/videogames/interfaces as a text which is corrective, informative and explorative. In the first case, the editors sought essays which would move the critical discourse on video games away from the more familiar but reductive debates surrounding the "effects" of video games (especially on children) and their modes of representation (especially of the female form and violence). Indeed, these have become the sine qua non of video game criticism and one feeds …
Making Sense Of Matter In Deleuze's Conception Of Cinema Language, Roger Dawkins
Making Sense Of Matter In Deleuze's Conception Of Cinema Language, Roger Dawkins
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
[First paragraph]
Writing in the 1960s and early 1970s, Christian Metz's work on the cinema favoured systematic exactitude, and was concerned with uprooting film theory from what he saw as the generalized approach of the early twentieth century (Andrews 213). Metz thought that a more scientific approach to the cinema was to be found with the question of language, and although this question was metaphorically present since the 1920s [1], Metz was the first to apply modern linguistic models to this problem (Guzzetti 292). What resulted was a methodology of analysis based on the formalism inherent to …
Newark Noir: A Study Of Film And Architecture, Tom Mcinerney
Newark Noir: A Study Of Film And Architecture, Tom Mcinerney
Architecture Senior Theses
"Through the investigation of the filmic narrative and the semantics of the visual style inherent in film noir, I intend to establish a precedent that can be used to construct an architectural product in Newark that serves to investigate the city's past, present, and anticipate the future."
