Saving "Cinderella": History And Story In Ashpet And Ever After, Elisabeth Rose Gruner Jan 2003

Saving "Cinderella": History And Story In Ashpet And Ever After, Elisabeth Rose Gruner

English Faculty Publications

An orphan is mistreated by a cruel surrogate family. The orphan is special, however, and with the intervention of kind and magical parental substitutes, rises to dizzying heights and achieves a happy ending. It’s a familiar tale, from “Cinderella” to Harry Potter —the difference is all in the details. In two fairy tale films of the 1980s and 1990s, those details remove the Cinderella story from the realm of fantasy. Ashpet and Ever After take pains to “realize” Cinderella—to remove almost all elements of magic and fantasy and to imagine, instead, what might make such a story real. Both incorporate …

Have Lamb Will Martyr: Samson As A Rustic Christ-Figure In Cecil B. Demille's Samson And Delilah (1949), Anton Karl Kozlovic

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

Cecil B. DeMille [1] (1881-1959) was a seminal founder of Hollywood who helped turn a Californian orange grove into a world class centre that became the synonym for film making (DeMille & Hayne, 1960; Edwards, 1988; Essoe & Lee, 1970; Higashi, 1994; Higham, 1973; Koury, 1959; Ringgold & Bodeen, 1969). Not only was the affectionately known C. B. an important film pioneer, producer and director, but he also became known as the master of the American Biblical Epic, and was variously tagged King of the epic Biblical spectacular (Finler, 1985, p. 32), the high priest of the religious …

Making Sense Of Matter In Deleuze's Conception Of Cinema Language, Roger Dawkins Apr 2002

Making Sense Of Matter In Deleuze's Conception Of Cinema Language, Roger Dawkins

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

Writing in the 1960s and early 1970s, Christian Metz's work on the cinema favoured systematic exactitude, and was concerned with uprooting film theory from what he saw as the generalized approach of the early twentieth century (Andrews 213). Metz thought that a more scientific approach to the cinema was to be found with the question of language, and although this question was metaphorically present since the 1920s [1], Metz was the first to apply modern linguistic models to this problem (Guzzetti 292). What resulted was a methodology of analysis based on the formalism inherent to …

Breaking The Mimetic Contract: Notes On Ideology, Intersubjectivity, And Film Theory, Giorgio Bertellini, C. Paul Sellors Jan 2002

Breaking The Mimetic Contract: Notes On Ideology, Intersubjectivity, And Film Theory, Giorgio Bertellini, C. Paul Sellors

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

In this essay we would like to sketch out a few notes outlining historical and theoretical trajectories of the confusing, and often confused, relationships between ideology, history and subjectivity in Marx, Marxism and post-Marxism. Marx and Engels' approach to ideology in The German Ideology (1845-46), spawned and influenced a variety of interpretations and philosophical positions from not only the numerous schools of Marxism proper, but also structuralism, semiotics and psychoanalysis up to the very raison d'être of discourse theory and new historicism. This reaching influence occurs only at the cost of contradiction, however, between Marxist factions -- disagreements …

Film Review: The House Of Mirth, James Morrison Jan 2001

Film Review: The House Of Mirth, James Morrison

CMC Faculty Publications and Research

Catharsis, said Aristotle, is the goal of drama. You'd never know it from The House of Mirth, an adaptation of Edit Wharton's 1905 novel by the great British filmmaker Terence Davies. Its intensity is distilled in its uncompromising restraint, and though there are passing moments of anger in the film, and rare, sudden swellings of grief, there's not a second of real release in this grim anatomy of a socialite's inexorable decline. Yet the film's relentlessness does not feel cruel. It feels like the piercing expression of a boundless pity.

Book Review: Hitchcock's Notebooks, James Morrison Jan 2001

Book Review: Hitchcock's Notebooks, James Morrison

CMC Faculty Publications and Research

Everyone knows movies are collaborative, polyvalent, and multiform; it's only in our stubbornly powerful experiences of them that they can seem autonomous, homeostatic, or singly begotten. Hitchcock's Notebooks—a tantalizing, frustrating glimpse through a narrow chink in the thick door of a hallowed vault—will not doom the myths of the auteur to their final resting place, but the book tellingly reveals the many negotiations, improvisations, sleights-of-hand, and slipknots that went into the crafting of Hitchcock's exacting, austerely precisionist films. To that extent, it contributes some compelling new information to both he meanings of the films and the image of …

Film Review: The Thin Red Line, James Morrison Jan 1999

Film Review: The Thin Red Line, James Morrison

CMC Faculty Publications and Research

In Malick's new film, his first in 20 years, this tension is gone. The Thin Red Line, based on James Jones' 1962 novel of World War II, pursues the strains of ardent feeling of the director's earlier work but, without seeming to renounce it, forsakes the irony. The core of the film follows an American battalion's fight against the Japanese for a hill at Guadalcanal, and although this core provides dramatic grounding for the movie, it is flanked at both ends, beginning and end, by stretches of storytelling so fragmentary, so mercurial, they're nearly abstract.
