A Deconstructive Reading Of Taoist Influenced Chinese And American Poetry, Hong Zeng Feb 2020

A Deconstructive Reading Of Taoist Influenced Chinese And American Poetry, Hong Zeng

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article “A Deconstructive Reading of Taoist Influenced Chinese and American Poetry” Hong Zeng attempts to deconstruct the logos status of "Nature" in Chinese natural philosophy and explore the tragic potentiality of such philosophy and poetry under its influence. It also analyzes its aesthetic strategies used to overcome historical tragedy, and how such tragic potentiality in classical Chinese philosophy and poetry break out into the imagery of death and fragmentation in modern Chinese and American poetry under its influence, including poetry by such poets as Hai Zi, Gu Cheng, Robert Bly and Wallace Stevens, and how it sometimes leads …

The Goddess Of Love In Sadomasochistic Costume: Roman Polanski's Venus In Fur, Alan P. Barr Feb 2020

The Goddess Of Love In Sadomasochistic Costume: Roman Polanski's Venus In Fur, Alan P. Barr

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

Throughout his career as a filmmaker, Roman Polanski has circled the subject of sex, its aberrations, its delights, and its risks. His twenty feature films are remarkably varied, yet characteristically probe the compelling, contradictory, and enchanting nature of human sexual behavior. He develops a cluster of images or tropes that appear across his films—from knives to claustrophobic settings—that advance his enquiry. Venus in Fur is Polanski’s most comprehensive portrayal of the intricacies of sexual conduct, employing a theatrical setting (rehearsing an adaptation of a notorious classic novel), amplified with cultural allusions and exploring the limits of role-playing. Normality and contentment, …

The Others (2001) By Alejandro Amenábar In The Light Of Valentinian Thought, Fryderyk Kwiatkowski Feb 2020

The Others (2001) By Alejandro Amenábar In The Light Of Valentinian Thought, Fryderyk Kwiatkowski

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

The article offers a Valentinian interpretation of the Hollywood film The Others (2001). A particular attention is paid to the ways in which cinematic motifs and narrative elements of the film draw on myths, ideas and symbolic imagery present in Valentinian works, especially in the Gospel of Truth (NHC I, 3) and the Gospel of Philip (NHC II, 3). In the course of the heuristic analysis, the paper argues that although the film employs Valentinian ideas, it depicts different understanding of the world. This issue is addressed in the last part of the article by situating the film within broader …

From Tragedy To Policy: Representations Of Muslims And Islam In U.S. Mainstream Media, Andrew Thompson Feb 2020

From Tragedy To Policy: Representations Of Muslims And Islam In U.S. Mainstream Media, Andrew Thompson

Augsburg Honors Review

As the wodd becomes more globalized, the lines dividing countries and cultures are increasingly blurred. Thc inter-connectedness of the globe brings people thousands of miles away together in a matter of seconds. However, as globalization has increased, other theories of dividing the world have arisen. One of the most prominent theories of dividing up the wodd was published in 1993 in Foreign Affairs by Samuel Fluntington. Huntington attempted to provide readers with a new term that described a long-standing, tnternalzed political myth: "The idea of a Clash between Civthzattons is a sort of electric spark that sets people's imagination alight, …

Bollywood Images: The Illusions And Realities Of Arranged Marriages, Weddings, Dowries, And Attitudes Toward The Girl Child In The Lives Of Women In India, Margaret Lundberg

Augsburg Honors Review

Offering audiences a romanticized interpretation of Indian life, the images in Bollywood films present the viewer with loving and supportive families, beautiful wedding rituals, and a "happily ever after" point of view that does not quite measure up to the societal realities of life for millions of Indian women. Juxtaposing themes and images from three popular Bollywood films against current attitudes towards women in Indian society, this paper will analyze the issues surrounding women's choice of marriage partners, the high cost of weddings and dowries, female infanticide, and the violence too often suffered by women and girls in India through …

The Mock Doc Film Series: History Of The Mockumentary Film, Victoria Napolitano Feb 2020

The Mock Doc Film Series: History Of The Mockumentary Film, Victoria Napolitano

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

As documentaries developed a more narrative approach to storytelling, filmmakers increasingly turned to scripted or fictional elements (events, characters, etc.) to depict or recreate “reality.” Robert Flaherty, John Grierson and other pioneering documentarians employed numerous fictional devices in their movies. These filmmakers, however, were relentlessly criticized by documentary film purists who steadfastly believed that the blending of fact and fiction was in many ways unethical and an unforgivable betrayal of the genre. Such critics feared that if truth, the key characteristic of the documentary film genre, were manufactured by filmmakers then the documentary genre would lose its uniqueness. More importantly, …

American Novels Amidst The Rise Of New Media: Emergent Publics And Forms, Sarah Ruth Jacobs Feb 2020

American Novels Amidst The Rise Of New Media: Emergent Publics And Forms, Sarah Ruth Jacobs

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation examines long-term shifts in the quantities and demographics (namely the race and educational attainment) of twentieth-century American literary readers alongside the rise and popular consumption of new media (namely television and the internet). The twentieth and twenty-first centuries are testament to a great expansion in the numbers and demographics of literary readers, and in turn an increase in the variety and intended audiences of literary publications. Examples include the rise of “middlebrow” readers and books in the 1940s and the rise of African-American, feminist, and countercultural small presses in the 1960s and 1970s. However, even as the variety …

Cinegrafia: Literatura, Espectadores Y Cinefilia Contemporanea En Latinoamerica, Rojo Robles Mejias Feb 2020

Cinegrafia: Literatura, Espectadores Y Cinefilia Contemporanea En Latinoamerica, Rojo Robles Mejias

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The arrival of cinema in Latin America quickly produced an intermedial cultural landscape. To this day, experimental authors in the Hemisphere and the Caribbean write cinegraphic fiction as a way to deal with film’s socio-cultural repercussions. My work addresses the question of how cinema transforms and subverts the creation of fictional narratives in the last five decades. By considering a corpus of post-1968 literary works in Latin America, I argue that contemporary cinegraphic fiction, a concept I coined, shed light on filmic discourses, platforms, and artifacts and transpose film language into literary texts. Intending to rethink polycentric film production and …

Binaural: Trauma And Disability Representation In Cinema, Joshua Grossberg Feb 2020

Binaural: Trauma And Disability Representation In Cinema, Joshua Grossberg

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

In the year 2019, the film business is undergoing profound change. Streaming services like Netflix and Amazon have become major distribution outlets, threatening the hegemony of traditional Hollywood studios and altering the kinds of movies that receive a theatrical release. Gone is the middle budget film, replaced by franchises like Marvel Cinematic Universe, The Fast and the Furious and Star Wars based on already popular intellectual property. But that's not all. In the wake of the fallout of the #OscarsSoWhite controversy and the #MeToo Movement, for the first time serious efforts are being made both outside and inside the industry …

The Cinematic Treatment Of Tableaux Vivants In D.W. Griffith’S Broken Blossoms, Sheikh Deen Feb 2020

The Cinematic Treatment Of Tableaux Vivants In D.W. Griffith’S Broken Blossoms, Sheikh Deen

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

D.W. Griffith's (January 22, 1875–July 23, 1948), one of the iconic American film directors of early silent cinema, felt his film Broken Blossoms (1919) to be his one art film and is considered to be an exemplary film in Tableaux Vivants[1] usage. When this Tableau skillfully employed, the effect can be dramatic, for it bridges the gap between theatre, sculpture, literature, and poetry. To better understand how Tableau works in Broken Blossoms, this study intends to analyze several scenes by showing how Griffith employs innovative film techniques within scenes through bodily gestures, motifs, and poetic stanzas to skillfully …

Lo Visible, Lo Invisible Y Lo Imaginable: Neoliberalismo Y Ciudad En Las Producciones Culturales De Posguerra En Centroamérica, Maria A. Leon Umana Feb 2020

Lo Visible, Lo Invisible Y Lo Imaginable: Neoliberalismo Y Ciudad En Las Producciones Culturales De Posguerra En Centroamérica, Maria A. Leon Umana

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This project researches the radical change that the peace treaty of the 1990s brought to Central American societies in connection with economic models. Specifically, it examines the way in which the implementation of neoliberal policies has transformed the cities concerning the spatial and the social; consequently, resulting in an important urban shift in regard to postwar cultural productions. I build a theoretical model organizes the investigation in three representative examples of Central American urban imaginaries (The Visible, The Invisible, and the Imaginable) so as to enlighten and/or enrich the analysis of the region’s urban social realities—examined in detail in a …

“Something Happened On The Day He Died”: How David Bowie Fans Transformed Brixton, Valerie Gritsch

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Following the death of David Bowie on January 10, 2016, his hometown of Brixton, South London, has become a pilgrimage and tourist destination for fans. On the 11th of January, the world discovered Bowie had succumbed to cancer and fans descended on Brixton to celebrate the life and legacy of their hometown hero, culminating in a spontaneous all-night street party attended by thousands. A mural of Bowie as his iconic character Aladdin Sane, originally painted in 2013, became the hub of memorialization in the wake of his passing and a crucial, enduring site for mourning fans seeking to connect …

Legend Has It: Tracking The Research Trope In Supernatural Horror Film Franchises, Deirdre M. Flood Feb 2020

Legend Has It: Tracking The Research Trope In Supernatural Horror Film Franchises, Deirdre M. Flood

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This study will analyze how information about monsters is conveyed in three horror franchises: Poltergeist (1982-2015), A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984-2010), and The Ring (2002- 2018). My analysis centers on the changing role of libraries and research, and how this affects the ways that monsters are portrayed differently across the time periods represented in these films. These franchises, which span a number of decades, and encompass sixteen films in total, offer a good wealth of information to study because they are all films centered around monsters that haunt. These monsters, while aesthetically in opposition to each other, are all …

“In The Same Figure, Like The King That’S Dead”: The Phantasmic Authorship Of The Other Side Of The Wind, Hunter M. Sawyer Feb 2020

“In The Same Figure, Like The King That’S Dead”: The Phantasmic Authorship Of The Other Side Of The Wind, Hunter M. Sawyer

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The release of The Other Side of the Wind calls into question some of the basic tenets of film theory and film academia in that it is a film that is essentially impossible to credit to a single auteur because of the death of its director decades before the film’s release. This thesis seeks to reconcile the fundamentals of the auteur theory, by returning to its origin in the pages of Cahiers du cinema and in the writing of Andrew Sarris, with this curious film object, credited by its distributor as a film by Orson Welles. Because an auteurist …
