Comprehensiveness Of Product Placement Study In Hollywood And Bollywood Movies, Nikita A. Subba

Merge

This research study is a detailed content analysis focused on finding a relationship between product placements found in Hollywood and Bollywood movies that share similar plotlines with one another from the year 2006 to 2015. The researcher examined twenty movies, ten movies from each movie industry. It was found that both Hollywood and Bollywood movies use a lot of brand integration as well as long durations of brand exposure. However, the detailed log produced through the coding sheet indicated that between the years of 2006 to 2015, Bollywood used a slightly higher number and duration of product placement than the …

Depictions Of Genetic Research In Film Across Film Genres, Jennifer Lund Jan 2019

Depictions Of Genetic Research In Film Across Film Genres, Jennifer Lund

Undergraduate Honors Theses

When people do not have personal experience to draw on, the experiences of characters in film can serve in the mind as a substitute. This research sought to determine what kind of impression films depicting genetics research leave on the audience. These genres were romance (Code 46, 2004), horror (Splice, 2009), thriller (Children of Men, 2006), and drama (Gattaca, 1997). Scenes from the films were analyzed to determine their likely effect on the audience perception of genetics. The researcher hypothesized that the drama and romance films would portray genetics research as neutral, but the science …

Don't Worry: A Personal Documentary Of My Grandmother And An Exploration Of Themes Of Motherhood, Loneliness, And Later Life, Olivia A. Wilson Jan 2019

Don't Worry: A Personal Documentary Of My Grandmother And An Exploration Of Themes Of Motherhood, Loneliness, And Later Life, Olivia A. Wilson

Honors Undergraduate Theses

The intent for this thesis is to to explore the ideologies of my grandmother and to learn from them. I do so by filming and editing a documentary with Grandma serving as my subject. She is a woman who has been very present in my life and who has lived and bestowed so much upon me that I still remain wanting more. I wish to know much more of her mind now than I did as a child of simpler times and ponderings. I have spent close to a year shooting and assembling this film that explores the nature of …

A Geocritical Approach To Coloniality And Aesthetics: Mapping The Spatial Narratives Of The Amazon Basin, Michael Wang Jan 2019

A Geocritical Approach To Coloniality And Aesthetics: Mapping The Spatial Narratives Of The Amazon Basin, Michael Wang

CGU Theses & Dissertations

Coloniality, or the living legacies and practices of the 500 years of European colonization, has produced racial, political, and cultural hierarchies around the colonial difference dividing East from West, center from periphery, civilization from the Global South. This dissertation examines a particular strand of coloniality in the Western narration and aesthetics of the Amazon basin, particularly the consequences of travel writing, science fiction and cinema of Amazon’s tropicality and its enduring effects on spatial cartography. In addressing Western representations of the jungle terrain, this paper focuses on the dichotomous relationship between the metropolitan center and the colonial outer-periphery exemplified by …

Ideological Analysis Of Colorblindness In Get Out, Danielle Goldstein Jan 2019

Ideological Analysis Of Colorblindness In Get Out, Danielle Goldstein

OUR Journal: ODU Undergraduate Research Journal

This ideological analysis of the horror film, Get Out, directed by Jordan Peele investigates three major ideological aspects that are poignant to the film. The main ideology that will be examined is “colorblindness” also known as colorblind racism, which is the belief or attitude that denying the existence of race will cure racism and achieve racial equality. The two other sub-ideologies that will be examined are multicultural racism and post-racism, as they are both facets of colorblindness and work together to reinforce one another in society. Colorblindness is apparent in the film’s dialogue that reveal attitudes regarding interracial dating …

Everyday Transcendence: Contemporary Art Film And The Return To Right Now, Aaron Pellerin Jan 2019

Everyday Transcendence: Contemporary Art Film And The Return To Right Now, Aaron Pellerin

Wayne State University Dissertations

“Everyday transcendence” names a style of filmmaking exemplified in recent works by Terrence Malick (The Tree of Life), Richard Linklater (the Before series and Boyhood), Ari Folman (Waltz With Bashir), and Douglas Gordon and Philippe Parreno (Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait). In each of these films, time operates on two interrelated levels: time as we experience it and understand it in our daily lives, and time as an overarching big picture. This big-picture temporality varies from film to film and is often ambiguous: for Malick, it appears as divine eternity; for Linklater, as a secular concept of an eternal Now; …

Globalization Tropes In Films: A Focus On Crazy Rich Asians, Nikhilesh Dholakia, Deniz Atik Jan 2019

Globalization Tropes In Films: A Focus On Crazy Rich Asians, Nikhilesh Dholakia, Deniz Atik

Marketing Faculty Publications

Learning from and encouraged by the impacts of film film-based windows into globalization phenomena, in this issue of MGDR, we have focused on the film Crazy Rich Asians. In the popular press, the movie has been hailed as a major cultural point of departure for Hollywood as well as panned as just an Asian Asian-themed romantic comedy that celebrates the super-rich of Asia. The buzz around this movie does, however, indicate a slight bend in the curve of the geopolitics of the globalization discourse – and hence our decision to feature a number of academically insightful reviews of this movie …

Teaching Visual Literacies: The Case Of The Great American Dust Bowl, Mary F. Rice, Ashley K. Dallacqua Jan 2019

Teaching Visual Literacies: The Case Of The Great American Dust Bowl, Mary F. Rice, Ashley K. Dallacqua

SANE journal: Sequential Art Narrative in Education

Teachers and students require a range of tools to engage with visual texts. Using The Great American Dust Bowlby Don Brown (2013) as an exemplar text, we outline four conceptions of visual literacy: rhetorical, instructional, industrial and visuo-spatial and discuss their use in our literacy education practice. In addition, we provide a brief model of a second text, The Arrival (Tan, 2013) and a list of suggested texts for students at different levels (elementary, middle, and high school). We argue that these tools have the potential to deepen conceptions of visual literacies and empower teachers and students to understand …

Black Feminist Articulations Of Race & Gender Within The Horror Film Genre, Katherine M. Ortiz Jan 2019

Black Feminist Articulations Of Race & Gender Within The Horror Film Genre, Katherine M. Ortiz

Honors Undergraduate Theses

The intent of this paper is to explore a black feminist perspective within the film horror genre. A black feminist perspective investigates how black women are portrayed within cinematic horror. It serves as a method to further articulate the particularities of race & gender within cinema. If we leave the cinematic space without a structural model of intervention, then we are left with film that remains unchallenged for ostracizing black women. The paper argues that black women become articulated through themes of motherhood, death, and sexuality.

Star Wars And Franchising: Emotional Ownership And Tensions In The Digital Age, Claire A. Pukszta

Scripps Senior Theses

This paper unpacks the franchise system and the often-tumultuous relationship between Producers and Consumers, especially around the release of new films by the Producers. Star Wars represents far more than just a corporate product. There is a thriving ecosystem around pieces that have touched fans lives personally.

The reaction of fans to new media texts in existing franchises is in constant flux. Tumultuous emotions of betrayal come in waves from fans immediately following the release of new content. Specifically focusing on reception to prequel films, Episode 1: The Phantom Menace (1999) and Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018), reveals …

Retail Tales And Tribulations: Transmedia Brands, Consumer Products, And The Significance Of Shop Talk, Avi Santo Jan 2019

Retail Tales And Tribulations: Transmedia Brands, Consumer Products, And The Significance Of Shop Talk, Avi Santo

Communication & Theatre Arts Faculty Publications

This article challenges media studies scholars to pay closer attention to retail spaces as sites that mediate how entertainment franchises engage consumers. Examining retail through a media industries lens, it argues that retail is a site of struggle among retailers and brand owners over how brand stories are told, if at all. The article explores both the storytelling devices used in telling Frozen and Sesame Street stories at Target and how shop talk among retailers, brand owners, and manufacturers shapes the kinds of stories that entertainment properties can tell at retail, especially as those stories intersect with retail imaginings of …
