Raised On Tv: A Queer Teen's Guide To Syndicated Sexualities, Francesca Petronio
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This thesis explores the contemporary landscape of LGBTQ adolescent television programming over the past decade. Applying a three-pronged approach to media content analysis—emphasizing a textual reading of the series, the networks’ political economy of production, and audience reception among scholars, culture critics and fans—the author provides both surface and symptomatic readings of Freeform’s Pretty Little Liars (2010-2017), MTV’s Faking It (2014-2016), and ABC’s The Real O’Neals (2016-2017). Thematically and chronologically, this period of programming spans the end of what has been called the gay-positive era, characterized by the politics of anti-bullying campaigns, and the emerging post-gay genre, born after the …

'Mary Poppins' And A Nanny's Shameful Flirting With Blackface, Daniel Pollack-Pelzner
Faculty Publications
In this piece originally published in the New York Times, Daniel Pollack-Pelzner discusses problematic racist imagery in both the 1964 and 2018 Mary Poppins films and argues that minstrelsy has long been Disney's mode of expressing topsy-turvy fun.

Sign language is the communication media among them. It is" a language which uses gestures instead of sound to convey meaning - combining hand shapes, orientation and movement of the hands, arms or body, facial expressions and lip-patterns. Signs are always part of daily communication among people, but for deaf it is the primary means. Communication among deaf community is easy through the sign language; however, the difficulty is when communicating with normal or vocal people.
Students Taking Social Action: Critical Literacy Practices Through School-As-Museum Learning, Genevieve Caffrey, Rebecca Rogers
Students Taking Social Action: Critical Literacy Practices Through School-As-Museum Learning, Genevieve Caffrey, Rebecca Rogers
Educator Preparation & Leadership Faculty Works
Inspired by critical literacy practices, sixth-grade students at Carter Elementary designed, curated, and publicly displayed a museum exhibit to expose and confront issues of social justice. Through this case study of one display within the exhibit, we analyze the ideas and stances represented in each of its artifacts and investigate how, together, the data sources create a discursive chain in regard to social action. We call on critically oriented discourse analysis (Gee, 2005; Rogers & Mosley Wetzel, 2013) to interpret the densely multimodal artifacts, considering how ideas and stances are embodied and intertextual. Our findings reveal how student-created museum learning …

Q2S Enhancing Pedagogy
SCIPP redefines and expands the existing notions about what makes for a vibrant and robust community of practice by partnering CSUSB students and professors with K-12 students, parents, and educators, along with committed community partners. SCIPP encourages curiosity in ways that leads to critical thinking, exploration, "risk taking", confidence building, open-mindedness, and other personal traits that equip them with the softskills to be active, critical, and creative contributors to our communities. SCIPP pedagogy embraces our students' collective wisdom and focuses on relational building where multi-directional communication is promoted and students are viewed as equal stakeholders in their own educations. SCIPP …

Dándoles Más De Lo Que Pidieron: La Justicia Epistemológica En El Abrazo De La Serpiente De Ciro Guerra, Ryan Bradley Pinchot
ETD Archive

Melodrama ‘à la française’: Feyder and French cinema of the 1930s
By the end of 1934, Jacques Feyder had led a distinguished career in French silent cinema, had directed a critically acclaimed adaptation of Émile Zola’s Thérèse Raquin (1928) in Berlin, had returned from a three-year contract in Hollywood, had brought Le Grand Jeu to the screen (the greatest box-office success of the 1933–34 season), and appeared to be virtually unstoppable as he proceeded to direct his next film, Pension Mimosas. The film was described by one critic as ‘sans aucun doute l’une des œuvres les plus attendues …

Storytelling And Self In Public Broadcast: A Visual Ethnography Of Rocky Mountain Pbs, Emily Baker
Storytelling And Self In Public Broadcast: A Visual Ethnography Of Rocky Mountain Pbs, Emily Baker
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Embodied storytelling in Denver's public broadcast media establishes how the intersectional identities of storytellers influence narrative practices in Denver's public sphere. Five approaches to communicating identity informed my theoretical background: embodiment, visual anthropology, the public sphere, practice theory, and phenomenology. Rocky Mountain PBS, a 60-year-old broadcast institution, served as my research site during the summer of 2018. In my thesis, I overviewed the history of RMPBS and observations of production activities performed by the creators of the show Colorado Memories. Using a phenomenological methodology, the research design and data collection included filmed participant observations, semi-structured interviews guided by a …

The Sky Is Clear And The Moon Is Full: Images Of Female Vampires In Music Video, Kathleen W. Taylor Kollman
Journal of Dracula Studies
Vampire imagery in art and entertainment
media can be used as metaphors for cultural issues
that shift over time. Many popular music genres have
used vampire imagery in much more allegorical
ways, particularly when discussing gender and
sexuality.
