Melodrama And The Aesthetics Of Emotion, E. Deidre Pribram Ph.D.
Melodrama And The Aesthetics Of Emotion, E. Deidre Pribram Ph.D.
Communications: Faculty Publications
Melodrama has long been associated with emotion, frequently in a pejorative sense due to its apparent emotional excesses. Conversely, scholars have argued that the melodramatic mode expresses “forces, desires, fears which... operate in human life," for which we have “no other language” (Gledhill tool, 31,37). In this chapter I explore how emotionality serves melodrama as an alrernarive “language" precisely to express forces, desires, and fears that operate beyond cognitive or ideological explanation.
Media Censures: The Hutchins Commission On The Press, The New York Intellectuals On Mass Culture, Stephen Bates
Media Censures: The Hutchins Commission On The Press, The New York Intellectuals On Mass Culture, Stephen Bates
Hank Greenspun School of Journalism and Media Studies Faculty Research
Around the middle of the 20th century, two groups of American intellectuals turned their attention to the mass media. The scholars on the Commission on Freedom of the Press, chaired by University of Chicago president Robert Maynard Hutchins, assessed the American news media. Dwight Macdonald and his fellow New York intellectuals assessed the American entertainment media and other forms of mass culture. On the whole, both groups were appalled. Hutchins et al. and Macdonald et al. inhabited different worlds—the intellectual establishment and the intellectual antiestablishment—yet the two groups developed parallel critiques. Comparing them reveals important aspects of the role of …
"It Came In Little Waves": Feminist Imagery In Chantal Akerman's Je, Tu, Il, Elle +, Staci C. Dubow
"It Came In Little Waves": Feminist Imagery In Chantal Akerman's Je, Tu, Il, Elle +, Staci C. Dubow
Honors Theses
Chantal Akerman writes, “she who seeks shall find, find all too well, and end up clouding her vision with her own preconceptions.”[1] This thesis addresses the films of Chantal Akerman from a theoretical feminist film perspective. There are many lenses through which Akerman’s rich body of work can be viewed, and I would argue that she herself never intended for it to be understood in just one way. I wish to situate Akerman’s films, in particular her 1974 Je, Tu, Il, Elle (1h 30m), within a discourse of other feminist film theorists and makers that were further rooted in …
Little Trees, Maxwell Kane
Little Trees, Maxwell Kane
Honors Theses
I believe in the power of film as a medium of storytelling. My desire to head a year-long production as well as create a moving story that underlined my interest in sibling relationships motivated me to create a short film as my honors thesis. My film, Little Trees, emphasizes themes such as alienation and growth within a broken household. My ultimate goal is to become an artist who creates meaningful cinema by telling deeply personal stories, and creating Little Trees was a successful first step in that process.
The Power Of Queer Representation In The Media, Jack Harris
The Power Of Queer Representation In The Media, Jack Harris
Audre Lorde Prize
This paper examines the lack of representation of the queer community in today's film and television productions. Recent work such as The CW's The 100 and Nickelodeon's The Legend of Korra are used to create an intersectional analysis of the tropes associated with queer characters and the effect that queer representation has on viewers. The intersectionality of queer rights and feminism is mapped out in an effort to understand the root of the issue and, in that discovery, find solutions for the future.
Too Intimate To Speak : Regional Cinemas And Literatures, Victor Fan
Too Intimate To Speak : Regional Cinemas And Literatures, Victor Fan
Journal of Modern Literature in Chinese 現代中文文學學報
In this essay, I look back at a moment in Chinese literature and cinema, the 1930s and 1940s, when writers, filmmakers, and critics were driven by a series of political crises to conceptualize the relationship between “mother language” and “national language” from a very different perspective than Song’s. I do so by scrutinizing film and literary criticisms from this period. A national language, literature, and cinema are not static, unified, and internally coherent entities that naturally subsume their regional counterparts under them. While Putonghua 普通話 (literally, common language) required—and still requires—an ongoing process of putong hua 普通化 (communalization), regional topolects, …

Transnational Film Production And The Tourist Gaze : On Hou Hsiao-Hsien’S Café Lumière And Flight Of The Red Balloon, Shr-Tzung, Elliott Shie
Journal of Modern Literature in Chinese 現代中文文學學報
This article attempts to reexamine the multiple forms of displacement in and of the film to which the new historical era gave rise, and thereby critically engage with the questions of transnational capital flow, global tourism and spectatorship, and textual migration in the case of intertextuality.
Lost At Home : Jia Zhangke’S Journey Toward Modernity, Wei Menkus
Lost At Home : Jia Zhangke’S Journey Toward Modernity, Wei Menkus
Journal of Modern Literature in Chinese 現代中文文學學報
In this essay, I take a close look at three of Jia’s films that have prominently engaged the topic of home in relation to place, identity, and nation: Still Life 三峽好人 (2006), 24 City 24城記 (2008), and A Touch of Sin 天註定 (2013). Set at the turn of the twenty-first century, these films employ various modes of representation concerning the reality of space. Still Life, a quiet and contemplative cinematic essay on change and obsolescence, tracks two strangers’ separate journeys to the Three Gorges city of Fengjie as they look for their missing spouses in the disappearing land. 24 City …
"Can You Still Feel It?": A Visual Poem, Aubrey Bang-Guerin
"Can You Still Feel It?": A Visual Poem, Aubrey Bang-Guerin
Whittier Scholars Program
Aubrey Bang-Guerin's "Can You Still Feel It?": A Visual Poem is a short, visual poem that will artistically depict the lingering struggles of a bully victim, and how those experiences continue to plague her 7 years later. The visual poem is a combination of Slam Poetry with a heavy imagery based short film on the detrimental long-term effects of bullying in adolescence. The combination of Slam poetry's popularity and film's timelessness creates an easily digestible format of extremely heavy information. "Can You Still Feel It?": A Visual Poem utilizes Bang-Guerin's own experiences and poetry to make a powerful piece of …
Disney’S Magical Moments: Animated Vs Live Action, Mauricio Romero
Disney’S Magical Moments: Animated Vs Live Action, Mauricio Romero
Whittier Scholars Program
What I hope to accomplish within my senior project is the actual progress within the Disney company. Will these changes to these films actually bring a different perspective to the audience about the Disney company. Or will they create new problems that they will be branded for once again. By looking at the originals critics and choices within the actual film and the advertisement I will see which has more critical success to the general public and if they were successful with the changes they tried to make. Specifically looking at their Princess films since those are most of the …
Like Me: Generation Z, Instagram, And Self-Branding Practices, Emily Longley
Like Me: Generation Z, Instagram, And Self-Branding Practices, Emily Longley
Scripps Senior Theses
The newest generation, raised and immersed in today's hyper-consumer culture, has learned to define the self within a neoliberal and capitalist framework in which self-branding and ascribing to hegemonic principles appears imperative to one’s personal success.
Rape Culture In Disney Animated Princess Movies, Patricia Paulson
Rape Culture In Disney Animated Princess Movies, Patricia Paulson
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
Gender stereotypes, rape myths, and rape culture are perpetuated in U.S. media, including media aimed at young people. Previous research in the areas of gender, gender stereotypes, portrayals of gender in movies, Disney movies, rape myths, and rape culture are all examined. Prior to this research, no study had been conducted to determine if the characteristics of rape culture are portrayed in Disney animated princess movies. For this research, an ethnographic content analysis is conducted on all thirteen of the Disney animated princess movies to determine if the characteristics associated with rape culture are portrayed in these movies. The findings …
Rape, Revenge, Reclamation: An Analysis Of Female Agency In American Rape-Revenge Films, Marissa Connell
Rape, Revenge, Reclamation: An Analysis Of Female Agency In American Rape-Revenge Films, Marissa Connell
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
In this thesis, I will analyze five films that have a rape-revenge narrative: Ms. 45 (1981), M.F.A. (2017), I Spit on Your Grave (1978), I Spit on Your Grave (2010), and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011). I will argue that the violent actions taken by the female protagonist during her revenge against her rapist(s) serve to allow her to reclaim her agency that was stolen from her during the rape(s). I will show that the rape-revenge narrative is more diverse than it might seem, as the five films I analyze deal with rape, and responses to rape, in …
Queer Slashers, Peter Marra
Queer Slashers, Peter Marra
Wayne State University Dissertations
Queer Slashers argues that slasher films invite queer engagements by staging collisions between a sexually deviant outsider, the "slasher" figure, and icons of American normativity: heterosexual teenage couples, suburbia, the prom, and summer camp, among others. To do so, Queer Slashers draws on horror and slasher scholarship along with queer theory and LGBT history. Slasher scholarship has already considered the ways in which gender plays an important role in the construction of the slasher formula. Much of this work has focused on the representation of women, especially patterns of violence against women. Queer Slashers seeks to make additional observations about …

My Eyes Due See, Johannes J. Barfield
My Eyes Due See, Johannes J. Barfield
Theses and Dissertations
My Eyes Due See is a multidimensional examination of the “black experience” in America. The installation is composed of a single-channel video, a music composition that utilizes music samples and live instrumentation, and sculptures made up of car parts and broomsedge grass. Each of these elements arranged in space share a nuanced and complicated view of blackness through the lens of a black man decoding personal history and American history simultaneously. Autonomy is the overarching theme throughout the work as it pertains to race, identity, urban and rural environments, and the relationship between generational trauma and nostalgia.
Wonder Woman: A Case Study For Critical Media Literacy, Adriana N. Fehrs
Wonder Woman: A Case Study For Critical Media Literacy, Adriana N. Fehrs
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
To better grasp the messages Wonder Woman is sending to its audience, a Critical Media Literacy (CML), ideological, and feminist framework is used to examine whether, and if so how, Wonder Woman succumbs to stereotypes that are often portrayed in the media. These theories will be used in the ensuing project to build a curriculum aimed at high school students. The curriculum positions students to examine the hegemonic ideologies that are represented in pop culture, specifically Wonder Woman.
New Day Films: Collective Aesthetics And The Collection, Elizabeth Coffman, Erica Stein
New Day Films: Collective Aesthetics And The Collection, Elizabeth Coffman, Erica Stein
School of Communication: Faculty Publications and Other Works
New Day Films was founded in 1972 - on the cusp of sweeping changes in documentary and feminist filmmaking practice - by four documentarists who were unable to gain distribution in the bottleneck of the New York nonfiction filmmaking scene (Figure 1). Despite these challenges, their films abot1t the everyday texture of women's lives were in demand with audiences as the women's movement grew across the country.' Today, New Day is one of the most financially stable nontheatrical distribution collectives in North America, boasting more than 165 members and $1rn in yearly revenues.2 Films distributed by the collective have been …
The First But Hopefully Not The Last: How The Last Of Us Redefines The Survival Horror Video Game Genre, Joseph T. Gonzales
The First But Hopefully Not The Last: How The Last Of Us Redefines The Survival Horror Video Game Genre, Joseph T. Gonzales
Senior Independent Study Theses
For this study, I applied generic criticism, which looks at how a text subverts and adheres to patterns and formats in its respective genre, to analyze how The Last of Us redefined the survival horror video game genre through its narrative. Although some tropes are present in the game and are necessary to stay tonally consistent to the genre, I argued that much of the focus of the game is shifted from the typical situational horror of the monsters and violence to the overall narrative, effective dialogue, strategic use of cinematic elements, and character development throughout the course of the …

A Teacher Goes Gothic: Walter White, Heisenberg And The Dark Revenge Of Science, J. Patrick Mcgrail, Ewa Mcgrail, Alicja Rieger
A Teacher Goes Gothic: Walter White, Heisenberg And The Dark Revenge Of Science, J. Patrick Mcgrail, Ewa Mcgrail, Alicja Rieger
Research, Publications & Creative Work
Much has been written on the natures and personalities of teachers in educational research and publications (Carter, 2009; Beck, 2012; Bulman, 2015; Dalton, 2013; Gillard, 2012; Kelly & Caughlan, 2011). However, mass media can have a powerful influence on how people see teachers. The television series Breaking Bad (Gilligan, 2007-2013) and its representation of teachers, has contributed a unique – if warped -perspective on the subject of teachers and teaching in America. In this article, we argue that three important Gothic and mythic fables from literature are harbingers of Walter White and his transformation – the Faust legend, as told …
I Am An Author: Performing Authorship In Literary Culture, Justin R. Greene
I Am An Author: Performing Authorship In Literary Culture, Justin R. Greene
Theses and Dissertations
Authorship is not merely an act of putting pen to paper or fingers to keyboard; it is a social identity performance that includes the use of multiple media. Authors must be hyper- visible to cut through the dearth of information, entertainment options, and personae vying for attention in our supersaturated media environment. As they enter the literary world, writers consciously create characters and narratives around themselves, and through the consistent and believable enactment of these features, authors are born. In this dissertation, I analyze the performance of authorship in U.S. literary culture through an interdisciplinary framework. My work pulls from …
Good Game, Greyory Blake
Good Game, Greyory Blake
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis and its corresponding art installation, Lessons from Ziggy, attempts to deconstruct the variables prevalent within several complex systems, analyze their transformations, and propose a methodology for reasserting the soap box within the display pedestal. In this text, there are several key and specific examples of the transformation of various signifiers (i.e. media-bred fear’s transformation into a political tactic of surveillance, contemporary freneticism’s transformation into complacency, and community’s transformation into nationalism as a state weapon). In this essay, all of these concepts are contextualized within the exponential growth of new technologies. That is to say, all of these semiotic …
The Mall: A World-Building Speculation On The Future Of Privacy, Hazem Asif
The Mall: A World-Building Speculation On The Future Of Privacy, Hazem Asif
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis is a science fiction exploration of a future dystopian world where privacy becomes a dominant currency that is distributed according to social class and ranking mechanisms. It utilizes speculative world-building to study the unanticipated implications of technology on personal privacy, surveillance and social inequality on future societies. The project introduces The Mall, as a highly efficient and hyper-connected world, but also exposes its downfall as a society with heightened cultural and socio-political disparities. Inspired by past civilizations, the development of the modern nation-state as well as contemporary society, the design adapts, appropriates and reformulates existing cultures into new …
Ultrasound—Re:Viewing Bodies, Minjee Jeon
Ultrasound—Re:Viewing Bodies, Minjee Jeon
Theses and Dissertations
A medical evaluation of physical impairment imposes the additional burden of “labeling” the patient with the condition. The binary nature of the normal versus abnormal label emphasizes difference and can lead to trauma. Understanding differences, however, can lead to the generation of new forms and thus, more sensitive differentiation and representation. Tension is created by exploring different bodily forms—a dialectic between form and essence. I am designing a space that visualizes and illuminates difference as a source of trauma and amplifying the tension by comparing figures that represent varying degrees of normalcy. This forms a critique of idealized form and …

The Player’S Journey: Ludology And Narratology In Modern Gaming, Angelica Fuchs
The Player’S Journey: Ludology And Narratology In Modern Gaming, Angelica Fuchs
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines the evolution of gaming criticism (specifically ludology and narratology) and games as a medium of expression through the use of case studies. These case studies look at some of the core aspects of four major titles (The Last of Us, Horizon Zero Dawn, various BioWare games and Journey) and survey how these games work to effectively employ a narrative while maintaining an immersive, intuitive system for the player to interact with. Through these titles, the thesis suggests that in order to gain a full scope of a game’s intentions, studies should analyze more than …
Laminated Paint, Travis R. Austin
Laminated Paint, Travis R. Austin
Theses and Dissertations
Though we may not perceive it, we are surrounded by material-in-flux. Inert materials degrade and the events that comprise our natural and social environments causally thread into a duration that unifies us in our incomprehension. Sounds reveal ever-present vibrations of the landscape: expressions of the flexuous ground on which we stand.
Blurred Lines And Shifting Boundaries: Copyright And Transformation In The Multimodal Compositions Of Teachers, Teacher Educators And Future Media Professionals, J. Patrick Mcgrail, Ewa Mcgrail
Blurred Lines And Shifting Boundaries: Copyright And Transformation In The Multimodal Compositions Of Teachers, Teacher Educators And Future Media Professionals, J. Patrick Mcgrail, Ewa Mcgrail
Research, Publications & Creative Work
The rapid proliferation of better quality “prosumer” equipment and powerful yet inexpensive editing software have helped erode the long-standing distinction between professional media producers and amateurs. Today’s aspiring young artists can take existing film, musical works, and other audiovisual material and transform them in varying degrees to create new work that comments on the world around them and that rivals in quality much of what Hollywood and professional musicians produce. However, this assessment is from the point of view of content. The looming specter of aggressive copyright policing by a litigious creative industry still divides the haves from the have …
“Disability Is An Art…”: Disability As Discourse/Counter-Discourse, David Adelman
“Disability Is An Art…”: Disability As Discourse/Counter-Discourse, David Adelman
Theses and Dissertations
This is a multipart thesis focused on the intersection between disability and art. What does it mean as an artist to engage the topic of disability? Relatedly, how do artists, art objects, and various aspects of culture contend with or confront disability? It is my contention that many disability artworks work to produce mediations of embodied, lived experience for their audiences. In other words, this kind of art takes the concept of disability, which we might otherwise experience only intellectually, or at a remove, and make that concept material, corporeal, and sensuous – creating an object which makes power relations …
