Adaptation: Is The Book Really Better Than The...Television Series?, Jane F. Eberts Apr 2012

Adaptation: Is The Book Really Better Than The...Television Series?, Jane F. Eberts

Scripps Senior Theses

When the topic of ‘adaptation’ is brought up, more often than not the coupling of a novel and its most recent Hollywood hit come to mind. Although it may not be at the forefront of the general population’s mind, adaptation is something that we encounter often, and consciously or not, we all have our own theory on the subject. While it may seem that the evolution of book series, to film adaptation, to booming franchise may be recently trending with the acceleration of blockbusters such as Harry Potter, adaptation has been a fundamental part of the advancement of media. …

Fetuses Are People, Too?: How Images Of Sonograms In Popular Culture Affect Our Conception Of Fetal Personhood, Shayna L. Orent Apr 2012

Fetuses Are People, Too?: How Images Of Sonograms In Popular Culture Affect Our Conception Of Fetal Personhood, Shayna L. Orent

Scripps Senior Theses

This thesis explores the way popular culture imitates and reinforces a sentimentalized reading of sonogram images that has been established by the conservative Right as the proper way to view this image. It analyzes several popular culture texts to expose the way their use of sonogram images personifies the fetus. It aims to problematize the way this image has become a symbol of fetal personhood and initiate a discussion about our roles as consumers of popular culture and images. Finally, it connects the use of this image to recent legislation surrounding mandatory ultrasounds and personhood initiatives, and argues that the …

Defining Industry Expectations And Misconceptions Of Art And Technology Co-Creativity, Vanessa C. Brasfield Apr 2012

Defining Industry Expectations And Misconceptions Of Art And Technology Co-Creativity, Vanessa C. Brasfield

Department of Computer Graphics Technology Degree Theses

The primary purpose of this study was to establish whether or not students and industry professionals share the same views about what students should be learning in animation education, what skills are necessary, and whether or not students graduating with a bachelor’s degree would be adequately prepared for an entry level position. To establish where misconceptions lie, surveys were issued to three groups: undergraduate students, post-graduate students, and industry professionals. These surveys were then analyzed using paired t-test for validation and question relevance, and ANOVA models to establish whether or not groups shared viewpoints. These data established significance within the …

Research On The Relationship Between Story And The Popularity Of Animated Movies, Meng Wang Apr 2012

Research On The Relationship Between Story And The Popularity Of Animated Movies, Meng Wang

Department of Computer Graphics Technology Degree Theses

Over the past ten years, animated films have become increasingly more important to the movie industry. Their increasing popularity is evident when looking at box office hits like Shrek, Kongfu Panda, and Iceage, to name a few.

No one will deny that some animated movies are more attractive to audiences than others. Previous studies show that a film’s story is the decisive factor that makes a film a success or a flop. The story plays a central role in bringing in an audience and thus determing a film’s critical acclaim and financial success. The story concept ties …

Romance Novel Heroines Don't Judge Books By Their Covers, Do You?: Popular Perceptions Of The Romance Genre Investigated, Nicole Koschmeder '12 Apr 2012

Romance Novel Heroines Don't Judge Books By Their Covers, Do You?: Popular Perceptions Of The Romance Genre Investigated, Nicole Koschmeder '12

Honor Scholar Theses

With this thesis, I want to look at some of these stereotypes about the genre and question why it is necessary for the readers of this genre to constantly be on the defensive about their reading choices. It is not my intention to declare that the entire genre is worthy of beatification and deserves a place in the literary canon. I simply wish to reveal the almost instinctual prejudice espoused by society that this genre has no value. I believe that, a minimal exposure to the genre can demonstrate that it is not just fluff and porn, but fulfills a …

Satire And Dissent: A Theoretical Overview, Amber Day Apr 2012

Satire And Dissent: A Theoretical Overview, Amber Day

English and Cultural Studies Journal Articles

In an age when Jon Stewart tops lists of most-trusted newscasters and Michael Moore becomes a focus of political campaign analysis, the satiric register has attained renewed and urgent prominence in political discourse. Day focuses on three central contemporary forms: the parodic news show, the satiric documentary, and ironic activism. She highlights their shared objective of circumventing the standard conduits of political information and the highly stage-managed nature of current political discourse. In so doing, she argues, they provide fans with a sense of community and purpose notably lacking from organized politics in the twenty-first century.

Germaine Tailleferre's Film Score To Les Grandes Personnes, Jenna E. Moghadam Apr 2012

Germaine Tailleferre's Film Score To Les Grandes Personnes, Jenna E. Moghadam

Glenn Korff School of Music: Dissertations, Theses, Student Creative Work, and Performances

French female composer, Germaine Tailleferre (1892-1983) is well-known for her small chamber music compositions, but less known for her film score compositions, and her elusive film scores have not been a topic of discussion in music scholarship at the time of this writing. The aim of this thesis is to analyze one of thirty-eight films for which Tailleferre composed a score, Les Grandes Personnes (1961), and the information will be presented in three chapters. Chapter 1 provides information on Tailleferre’s life and compositional career, her inclusion in and the aesthetic endeavors of Les Six, and a background on French …

Journalism Training And Media Development, Daire Higgins, Michael Foley

Conference Papers

It is now 17 years since the collapse of the communist regimes in Eastern and South Eastern Europe and nearly 17 years since the first initiatives were put in place to train journalists and reform the media. In that time a vast amount of money has been spent on media training and development with thousands of journalists receiving some sort of training from Western journalists, trainers and educators. Today, with some exceptions, journalism throughout the region is still characterised by a lack of professionalism, little understanding of the need for accuracy, a willingness to accept bribes and a lack of …

Civil Rights, Labor, And Sexual Politics On Screen In Nothing But A Man (1964), Judith E. Smith Apr 2012

Civil Rights, Labor, And Sexual Politics On Screen In Nothing But A Man (1964), Judith E. Smith

American Studies Faculty Publication Series

The independently made 1964 film Nothing But a Man is one of a handful of films whose production coincided with the civil rights insurgency and benefited from input from activists. Commonly listed in 1970s surveys of black film, the film lacks sustained critical attention in film studies or in-depth historical analysis given its significance as a landmark text of the 1960s. Documentary-like, but not a documentary, it offers a complex representation of black life, but it was scripted, directed, and filmed by two white men, Michael Roemer and Robert Young.

This essay argues that the film’s unusual attention to labor …

Invitation To The Voyage: The Flight Sequence In Contemporary 3d Cinema, Sara Ross Apr 2012

Invitation To The Voyage: The Flight Sequence In Contemporary 3d Cinema, Sara Ross

Communication, Media & The Arts Faculty Publications

The soaring movement of the flight scene is a signature effect of the current 3D cycle, with a number of recent films centering on birds or dragon-like creatures. Simulated flight has long been used to display the latest in cinematic spectacle. Analysis of the use of flight in Wings (1927), Avatar (2009) and How to Train Your Dragon (2010) demonstrates how film producers have employed tried and true schemata to make the attractional power of flight serve a narrative master.

Busting A Gut: Portrayals Of Obesity In Popular Culture, Carly Babel Mar 2012

Busting A Gut: Portrayals Of Obesity In Popular Culture, Carly Babel

Annual Undergraduate Conference on Health and Society

Obesity is America’s number one leading health epidemic, affecting more than 93 million Americans today (OAC). From 1985 to 2010, obesity has gone from affecting an average of 10% of individuals in just about every state to today affecting 33.8% of people within each state. Children and adults alike all over the U.S. are being diagnosed with obesity and encouraged to change their lifestyles. Doctors are prescribing patients to lose weight, exercise, eat healthy, and in extreme cases, go under the knife, but none of these recommendations are making a dent in lowering the rate of obesity. Rather, the number …

Shaping Identity: Male And Female Interactions In Cinema, Jonette Lauren Lagamba Mar 2012

Shaping Identity: Male And Female Interactions In Cinema, Jonette Lauren Lagamba

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

ABSTRACT

Since the inception of cinema, women have been portrayed with the typical identities of emotionally and physically weak characters; this portrayal led to their subsequent dependence on men. Men were usually the protagonists and/or the heroes, following their archetypal journey. Thus, women's position in early cinema was to exemplify what men were not, placing the former in the diminutive position of the Other. One may conclude that men were often defined by what women lacked, and the women were defined by their relationships with these heroic men. As time progressed in the history of cinema, women's images retained part …

When Bad Things Happen To Good Mothers: Rethinking Motherhood Through The Single Mother Image In American Films From The 1930s To The 1970s, Tanna Alice Mancini Mar 2012

When Bad Things Happen To Good Mothers: Rethinking Motherhood Through The Single Mother Image In American Films From The 1930s To The 1970s, Tanna Alice Mancini

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

ABSTRACT

The single-mother figure shows up in myriad American film genres, and my thesis explores three of these genres, maternal melodrama, film noir, and horror. I argue there is a melodramatic mode that carries over from maternal melodrama to film noir and horror. This mode emphasizes emotional excess. In maternal melodrama, the emotional excess is pity. For film noir, the emotion is anxiety, and in horror, it is repulsion. Even though each genre has its own emotional excess, maternal melodrama still speaks to these other genres through its maternal sacrifice, non-heteronormative families and misreading of proper gender performances. For this …

Out Of Our Depth: Hyper-Extensionality And The Return Of Three-Dimensional Media, Justin Alan Brecese Mar 2012

Out Of Our Depth: Hyper-Extensionality And The Return Of Three-Dimensional Media, Justin Alan Brecese

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This work theorizes the contemporary attraction to three-dimensional media. In doing so, it reframes ongoing debates surrounding digital three-dimensional media in order to critique the neoliberal social relations such media engender. I argue that the contemporary interest in dimensionality, especially regarding digital media, is symptomatic of a broad cultural shift, wherein millions of lives are now essentially being lived through two-dimensional, "flat" media, which have consequently generated a lack of spatial relationships and a craving or desire for "depth." This "desire for depth" has arisen in contemporary society because people are being "spread too thin" through a combination of the …

La Noche De Los Mayas: A Misunderstood Film And Its Music, Abderrahman Anzaldua Feb 2012

La Noche De Los Mayas: A Misunderstood Film And Its Music, Abderrahman Anzaldua

The Hilltop Review

The intention of this study is to explore and evaluate the film La Noche de los Mayas. I will research the making of the movie and what surrounded production in 1939. In addition to this, I will seek a perspective of the music of Revueltas and its relation with the film. With this research I intend to acknowledge the importance that this film had in its time, and expectantly decipher the enigma that impedes its popularity today compared to other films of the 'Golden Age' of cinema in Mexico.
