Co-Learning Pedagogies In The Media Literacy Education Classroom, Erika Hill
Co-Learning Pedagogies In The Media Literacy Education Classroom, Erika Hill
Theses and Dissertations
This qualitative research project describes the experiences of students in BYU's Hands on a Camera Project as they were introduced to co-learning pedagogies. Hands on a Camera is a media literacy service-learning project where university students are placed in public schools to teach K-12 students documentary production and media literacy. The project consists of a preparation phase and a teaching phase. In the research project, students were required to complete peer-learning and peer-teaching assignments during the preparation phase as in order to prepare for the teaching phase. This ethnographic study describes student experiences—positive and negative—with peer learning during both phases …

Race, Gender, And Research: Implications For Teaching From Depictions Of Professors In Popular Film, 1985-2005, Mari Dagaz, Brent D. Harger
Sociology Faculty Publications
When students enter college classrooms for the first time they inevitably have preconceived images of professors. According to research on student evaluations of teaching, these preconceptions have important implications in college classrooms. This study explores one avenue through which these preconceptions are perpetuated – popular film. Using content analysis we examine popular films released between 1985 and 2005 that contain professors in either primary or secondary roles. Our findings show stereotypical depictions beyond glasses, bow ties, and tweed jackets. Specifically, we find stereotypical images of race and gender as well as an emphasis on the importance of research, sometimes at …

Rationalising Public Service: Scheduling As A Tool Of Management In Rté Television, Ann-Marie Murray
Rationalising Public Service: Scheduling As A Tool Of Management In Rté Television, Ann-Marie Murray
Doctoral
Developments in the media industry, notably the increasing commercialisation of broadcasting and deregulation, have combined to create a television system that is now driven primarily by ratings. Public broadcast organisations must adopt novel strategies to survive and compete in this new environment, where they need to combine public service with popularity. In this context, scheduling has emerged as the central management tool, organising production and controlling budgets, and is now the driving force in television. Located within Weber’s theoretical framework of rationalisation, this study analyses the rise of scheduling as part of a wider organisational response to political and economic …
From Here To InFinnerty: Tony Soprano And The American Way, Terri Carney
From Here To InFinnerty: Tony Soprano And The American Way, Terri Carney
Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS
As fellow critics have pointed out in a myriad of published studies on the series, The Sopranos challenges the traditional gangster genre formula and brings the mob closer to all of us: Tony and his gang inhabit a recognizable world of Starbucks, suburbia, and SUVs. They discuss issues of the day, the same ones we discuss when we turn off the TV after the episode. In short, they inhabit a quotidian reality that is continuous with our own, and we are prevented from drawing the neat lines that allow us a comfortable remove from the horror of the “criminal world,” …

Lady Libertines, Female Fops, And Lady Julia Fulbank: Aphra Behn's Extraordinary Female Characters., Sarah Audine Amundsen
Theses and Dissertations
Aphra Behn has, throughout her life and subsequent years, been both demonized as a writer of bawdy and licentious plays and poetry as well as being hailed as the forerunner of female writers. She was a woman writing in a man's world, and not only survived the experience, but was exceptionally successful in her efforts. While so little is known about her background, the numerous plays she has left behind demonstrate a skilled author in many forms, as well as a creative and innovative storyteller. This thesis will examine how Behn used the traditional theatrical forms of the time and …
Cry The Beloved Media: New Media And Student Perceptions In A World Literature Classroom, Timbre Janiece Newby Greenwood
Cry The Beloved Media: New Media And Student Perceptions In A World Literature Classroom, Timbre Janiece Newby Greenwood
Theses and Dissertations
This qualitative action research project addressed the infusion of media literacy and new media into a standard secondary English language arts curriculum. In examining students' perceptions of South Africa as they interacted with new media texts in conjunction with the traditional literary text Cry, the Beloved Country, this study also explored the manner in which students' media interactions informed their reading of the novel. As a result of the research data, the author asserts that media literacy education can, in fact, play an effective role in teaching literature within the world literature classroom.
A Country Of Immigration? Situating German Multiculturalism In The New Europe, Julia Khrebtan-Hörhager
A Country Of Immigration? Situating German Multiculturalism In The New Europe, Julia Khrebtan-Hörhager
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation addresses a complex cultural and social phenomenon: German multiculturalism in the framework of the European Union in the century of globalization and global migration. I use selected cinematographic works by Fatih Akin, currently the most celebrated German and European filmmaker, as cultural texts. This project illuminates cultural controversies, political complexities, and the discriminatory nature of German multiculturalism. Specifically, I show how and why the German society eagerly accepts and successfully integrates Italian immigrants, yet, culturally marginalizes and socially excludes the Turks. My work illuminates how complex historical and political processes of the past, guided by the principle of …

Beyond This Point Are Monsters, Roxanne M. Carter
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Beyond This Point Are Monsters is a creative work which establishes a fluid, unstable space between the mediated image and the written word. It addresses issues of repetition and difference in the TV melodrama and the inscribed surface of the house in the Gothic novel, performing the romantic and sensational tropes of the Gothic formula in order to subvert them. The project investigates and inhabits the soap opera Dark Shadows which aired daily on ABC from 1966 to 1971, and examines the manner in which the show defies its own genre conventions. I chose Dark Shadows as the foundational source …

From Where I Am Standing: Indigenous Narrative And Photo Documentary, Nestor R. Veloz Passalacqua
Ethnic Studies
Latin American Indigenous Peoples (LAIP) are a marginalized segment in Latin America. They inhabit a sub-America and are forced to migrate due to socio-political struggle and cultural coercion. LAIP experience a transnational and transborder migration that reflects the quality of cultural hybridity and of regional, ethnic, and cultural crossings. The purpose of this study is to research LAIP ways of reclaiming and reproducing cultural practices that elicit Indigenous awareness, knowledge, and ethnic identification in a transnational setting. The study examines through interviews and photographs transborder experiences and the lives of the participants. As a result, the project reveals that LAIP …

Kazoku Cinema, Chunhyang And Postmodern Korean Cinema, Hyangsoon Yi
Kazoku Cinema, Chunhyang And Postmodern Korean Cinema, Hyangsoon Yi
Journal of Global Initiatives: Policy, Pedagogy, Perspective
This article examines the salient characteristics of two representative postmodern Korean films from the late 1990s: Park Chulsoo's Kazoku Cinema (1998) and Im Kwon-Taek's Chunhyang (2000). Im and Park are veteran filmmakers who developed their directorial careers in the mainstream commercial film and television industries. In the 1990s, however, they decided to turn from the conventional mode of cinema to a more experimental form of film. These shifts resulted in a series of self-reflexive films. Kazoku Cinema is structured in terms of a film-within-a-film. Park's metacinematic treatment of the movie-making process for a dysfunctional Korean-Japanese family showcases his effort to …
The Femme Fatale And The Exotic Queer Within Shinya Tuskamoto's Tetsuo: Gender As Narrative Tool Within An Allegory For Post Wwii Japan's Industrialized Identity Crisis, Nickolus Walters
Anthós
Within Shinya Tsukamoto’s seminal independent horror masterpiece Tetsuo, the viewer’s perceptions of reality and the present are distorted within a temporally disjointed blend of horrific fantasy and banal existence; this instability reflects the vocal and subconscious critiques of historical ontological truths exhibited within the emergent transnational genres of Japanese cyberpunk and American Avant-pop ideologies of the late 1980’s. Author Takayuki Tatsumi uses Shinya Tsukamoto's Tetsuo to illustrate the emergence of the "Japanoid," a technologically driven fusion of American and Japanese post-war identity best understood as a manifestation of Donna Haraway's socio-political "cyborg." Tatsumi strongly advises avoiding interpretation through a "queer" …

Empowering And Engaging Teen Girls Through Media From The Perspective Of A Practitioner And Producer, Marie Celestin
Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection
Mainstream media plays an important part of our lives. For teens today, often labeled the “digital generation,” media sources affect the way they read, understand, and interpret information and are a critical influence on the way they see themselves. I have been a media critic since I was a teenager, but the Critical and Creative Thinking program allowed me to articulate my vision for a fairer representation of women and girls while tapping in my creative toolbox to produce original and bolder images of real girls through the G.I.R.L.S. (Growing Individuals Reacting to Life's Struggles) Project and GIRL TV—in short, …

Ground Zero: Tourism, Terrorism, And Global Imagination, Maxwell E. Loos
Ground Zero: Tourism, Terrorism, And Global Imagination, Maxwell E. Loos
International Studies Honors Projects
At Ground Zero, the transnational phenomena of tourism and terrorism intersect. In this thesis, I introduce the concept of global imagination, and analyze how tourism and terrorism affect this process of global imagination for Americans, arguing that tourism plays an important role in constructing a globe, while terrorism – particularly the 9/11 attacks – works to interrupt imaginative process itself. I then explore how tourism of terrorism at Ground Zero influences global imagination, containing the events of 9/11, allowing for the construction of only a very specific globe in which the U.S. is an innocent, benevolent actor in world history.
(Don't) Stop Playing That Game: A Rhetorical Analysis Of The Video Game Addiction Stereotype, Chet Daniel Breaux
(Don't) Stop Playing That Game: A Rhetorical Analysis Of The Video Game Addiction Stereotype, Chet Daniel Breaux
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The growing popularity of game addiction discourse has necessitated study of how video game critics rhetorically construct addiction. In the following thesis, I analyze contemporary examples of texts that link game addiction to drug abuse. I use Robert Cover’s analysis of how game addiction stereotypes form in conjunction with Aristotle’s rhetorical principles to isolate the persuasive appeals used by authors to rhetorically construct game play as addictive. These addiction arguments, however, are rooted in a larger historical context, and I present examples of game guidebooks and comic books published in the late 1970s and early 1980s to illustrate their rhetorical …
Do Marketing Media Have Life Cycles? The Case Of Product Placement In Movies, Ekaterina Karniouchina, Can Uslay, Grigori Erenburg
Do Marketing Media Have Life Cycles? The Case Of Product Placement In Movies, Ekaterina Karniouchina, Can Uslay, Grigori Erenburg
Business Faculty Articles and Research
This article examines the economic worth of product placement in movies over a time span of 40 years (1968-2007). The authors find an inverted U-shaped relationship between the year of the movie release and the returns associated with product placements. In addition, a similar inverted U-shaped relationship characterizes the economic worth of tie-in campaigns associated with product placements. These findings are consistent with the habituation tedium theory used to explain the inverted U-shaped pattern in response to novel advertisements and suggest that the same mechanism could be influencing the response to an entire marketing medium. Overall, the results reinforce the …

For my honors thesis, I created a documentary film about my experience in India this past summer.
What We Dreamed To Become depicts the journey of two people of the same African heritage: Dr. Pashington Obeng, an African Studies Professor at Harvard, and a native of Ghana; and a young Siddi boy named Budhesab Hussein.
The Siddis are an Indian ethnic group descended from African slaves. Pash has worked extensively with the Siddis for more than a decade, and hopes to create self-sufficiency within the group.
The young Budhesab has severe vision problems, and happens to join Pash on a …

“The Lotus Flower” is an animation based on the epic story of Shimchong, a girl who overcomes her poverty due to her devotion to her family and later marries into the royal family. This Cinderella story is a famous Korean tale that has been told and re-told for centuries. By bringing this story to an international audience, I hope to bring at least a small awareness of the cultural and historical value of Korea.
The script was adapted and written by me, taking various versions of the folktale into account as well as putting my own details and embellishments to …

American Political Satire: The 20th Century Onward, Michael Contino
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
Political satire is an implied freedom enumerated in the first amendment of the Constitution. As a form of political speech, it falls under the category of the most protected form of expression. Now that I’ve got your attention, I can go ahead with the rest of my project. This is a journalistic study of the people who used their freedom of speech to openly criticize the government. More specifically, it’s about the people who openly criticized the government and then became famous for it. Of course, there’s many ways to criticize, many platforms, many audiences, many influences as well.

Partings—A Short Film, Alicia Atterberry
Partings—A Short Film, Alicia Atterberry
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
Love is a powerful force, but the inability to give love to the fullest extent can be an influential force as well. For my capstone, Partings—a Short Film, I wrote a short film centered on the theme of unreciprocated love. Within the context of the film, unreciprocated love means not being able to return the sincerity or the full extent of the love felt, and my short film shows the consequences of a friendship that lacks mutually-expressed love.
Partings, depicts the end of a friendship between two characters: Frank and Angie. Frank is an independent, young woman; she …
