So You Think You Know Dance?: Popular Dance And Cultural Identity On Television, Eleni Koutroumanis Jan 2011

So You Think You Know Dance?: Popular Dance And Cultural Identity On Television, Eleni Koutroumanis

American Studies Senior Theses

Dancing has reached new levels of popularity in America due to its publicity in new television shows over the past seven years. These shows have changed the image and ways of dance world, but more importantly the shows have brought dance into the Public Sphere and allowed the excluded to comment on, and in a way join, the dance world. Furthermore, these shows are bringing forward commentary on subaltern counterparts of two levels. One is dance culture, and those who make dance what it is today, being acknowledged in a greater public. The other refers to subaltern counterparts of a …

Migration And Intercultural Cinema In Ireland: A New Contemporary Movement?, Agnes Kakasi

Migration and Intercultural Cinema in Ireland: A New Contemporary Movement?

‘Accented cinema’ (Naficy, 2001) is a transnational cinematic genre shaped by the personal exilic and diasporic experience of the filmmaker, and the thematic and stylistic aesthetics of the film. Much as Third Cinema, it subverts the practices of classical (Hollywood) cinema and auteur (European) cinema by depicting the interstitial positionality of the exiled/diasporic/migrant/ethnic film, filmmaker, and production practice. In places where filmmaking belongs to a quasi-homogeneous privileged circle, representations of the ‘accented’ subject can be highly indicative of national ideologies, power relations, and cross-cultural interactions. This paper will introduce the …

Peak Oil And Transition: The Making Of A Documentary Video, John A. Duvall Jan 2011

Peak Oil And Transition: The Making Of A Documentary Video, John A. Duvall

Collected Faculty Scholarship

Many scientists and academics have raised serious concerns regarding the depletion of fossil fuels—especially the peaking of oil production—and its impact upon society. According to these researchers, oil for transportation and production will soon become expensive and scarce, and known alternative sources of energy will be insufficient to make up the difference within the required time frame. Therefore, world civilization (and the United States in particular) will soon undergo a crisis in energy supply that will have significant impacts on the structure of community life, economic wellbeing, political organization, and individual lifestyles.

One response to these threats is to attempt …

To Speak Or Not To Speak: The Implications Of Silence In Shakespeare's Hamlet, Margaret Rose Jones Jan 2011

To Speak Or Not To Speak: The Implications Of Silence In Shakespeare's Hamlet, Margaret Rose Jones

Theses Digitization Project

This thesis explores the function and importance of silence throughout William Shakespeare's play Hamlet. Along with analysis of Shakespeare's text, this thesis also reviews and analyzes three film versions of the play: Laurence Olivier's 1948 production, Kenneth Branagh's 1996 production, and Michael Almereyda's 2000 production. All of these showcase various depictions of silence while working with the same Shakespearian text and plotline. Throughout the text and film analyses this thesis explores three areas in which silence plays an important role: refusal to join a conversation, emotional distress rendering someone silent, and societal limitations placed on the individual. This thesis attempts …

An Ethico-Politics Of Subaltern Representations In Post-9/11 Documentary Film, Joseph D. Parker

Pitzer Faculty Publications and Research

The World War Without End (WWWoE), formerly known as the War on Terror,ii is one of those rare occasions when a gendered subaltern population comes to the attention of the nation-state. If the subaltern is understood as something akin to illiterate rural women from the global South, then she now has the full attention of the White House and Downing Street, the US State Department, CNN and Time magazine.iii In official state positions and in media coverage, interest in the subaltern is often expressed in humanitarian attention to the rights or freedoms of these subaltern women in order to justify …

Estimating The Effects Of Integrated Film Production On Box-Office Performance: Do Inhouse Effects Influence Studio Moguls?, Daniel M. Polyakov

CMC Senior Theses

Each year well over one billion movie tickets are sold to an audience who knows very little about what they are getting themselves into. Why is it that despite the uncertainty, people return to the theaters to see what Hollywood has in store for them? In efforts to provide answers regarding the driving forces behind Hollywood’s blockbuster hits, this study takes into account the integration levels of the studios. Specifically, does a movie produced in-house at a large studio have a better chance of being a blockbuster hit than one which is outsourced to an independent production company? Further, I …

Isp Thesis, Joseph Michael David Jan 2011

Isp Thesis, Joseph Michael David

Wayne State University Theses

Abstract

AN INTERDISCIPLINARY PERSPECTIVE ON TRANSFORMATIONAL LEADERSHIP

By: JOSEPH DAVID

December 2010

Advisor: Dr. Richard Raspa

Degree: Master of Interdisciplinary Studies

Many people in today's world often submit to broad assumptions, generalizations and faulty reasoning in determining what constitutes a competent leader. Qualities such as high energy, positive attitude and charisma are unfortunately the sole traits that elect leaders. While positive thinking does help to produce compelling visions to inspire people, high energy is necessary for leadership given the workload and charisma needed to win people over. These are components for election not successful leadership.

Such narrow sighted values for …

The Fortas Film Festival, Brian L. Frye Jan 2011

The Fortas Film Festival, Brian L. Frye

Studio for Law and Culture

The story of Jack Smith’s film Flaming Creatures and the “Fortas Film Festival” illustrates the dialectic of obscenity. The obscenity doctrine expresses the conventional wisdom that the First Amendment actually protects art, and protects pornography only by extension. But Flaming Creatures and the Fortas Film Festival suggest that obscenity is dialectical. The obscenity doctrine provides the thesis: art protects pornography, by justifying the protection of sexual expression. Flaming Creatures and the Fortas Film Festival provide the antithesis: pornography protects art, by normalizing sexual expression. The history of obscenity law provides the synthesis: art and pornography protect each other. In other …

Inside And Outside Southern Whiteness: Film Viewing, The Frame, And The Racing Of Space In Yoknapatawpha, Peter Lurie Jan 2011

Inside And Outside Southern Whiteness: Film Viewing, The Frame, And The Racing Of Space In Yoknapatawpha, Peter Lurie

English Faculty Publications

Though neither film nor film viewing is ever named in As I Lay Dying, both the apparatus of cinema and what we might term its sociohistorical effects are evoked powerfully by and in the novel. These include the passing before the reader’s “gaze” of the discrete, separate “frames” of the various characters’ monologues, as well as, in particular section, a fascination with watching machinery that resembled the interest of early film biewers in the cinematic apparatus (see Doane 108).

If Vardaman and his family are not explicitly depicted as film viewers, they nevertheless show signs of what has been …

Translating The Language Of Film: East Asian Films And Their Hollywood Remakes, Julia Yu Jan 2011

Translating The Language Of Film: East Asian Films And Their Hollywood Remakes, Julia Yu

CMC Senior Theses

Hollywood remakes of East Asian films clearly change more than just the language of a film, and the choices that producers and directors make in order to tailor a foreign film so that it better appeals to American audiences creates an entry point that allows for a more direct comparison of aesthetic styles, cultural tastes, and narrative conventions. An analysis of two case studies, South Korean hit film My Sassy GIrl (2001) and Hong Kong's Infernal Affairs trilogy (2002, 2003, 2003) remade into My Sassy Girl (2008) and The Departed (2006), explores the principles of Korean and Hong Kong commercial …

Does An Academy Award Affect Stock Return?, Kelli M. Maltsbarger

CMC Senior Theses

This study examines the affect of winning an Academy Award on the stock price of parent companies.  On average, receiving an Oscar has no significant impact on the stock of parent companies during the few days surrounding the broadcast of the Academy Awards.  The findings of this study introduce questions of external interference and possible limitations on this type of research.  However, my study sheds light on future topics of investigation for analyzing the effects of televised award shows on the stock market.
