Star As Genre: Actors And Their Externalities In Popular Tamil Cinema, Ganga Rudraiah Mar 2011

Star As Genre: Actors And Their Externalities In Popular Tamil Cinema, Ganga Rudraiah

Research Day (Arts & Humanities, FIMS, and Education)

The star machinery of Tamil cinema presents itself as a nearly unfathomable system that produces stars out of actors and fans out of audience on a grandiose scale. The study is invested in determining a specific mode of star films in Tamil cinema as a unique genre by itself. These films from the southern state of Tamil Nadu in India typically frame and deify the male actor as a star. The star’s image prevails over the narrative, thereby organizing the entire film for the star and not vice-versa. The stars in Tamil cinema are not icons for a genre; rather …

Promoting A Benefit Concert With Digital Media, Aubrea Felch Mar 2011

Promoting A Benefit Concert With Digital Media, Aubrea Felch

Graphic Communication

The introduction of digital media in mass communication and advertising had a powerful impact on the event planning industry, specifically in the promotion of benefit concerts. Not only can digital media promote an event, but it can also help event coordinators establish an image for themselves, be used as a means of benefiting those who have donated to the cause, and enhance the event itself. All digital media can be put into several different classifications: digital audio, digital video, digital photography, Internet technology, and interactive Internet applications. This study asks the question: In what ways can an event planner use …

A Study Of The Effect Of Globalisation On The Malaysian Film Production Industry., Herwina Rosnan Mar 2011

A Study Of The Effect Of Globalisation On The Malaysian Film Production Industry., Herwina Rosnan

Student Works (2010-2019)

Studies on the effects of globalisation are extensive. However, the existing literature concerning the effects of globalisation on the film production industry has been largely the interest of scholars from cultural studies, media and/or communications fields of study. Much of their concerns pertain to the spread of cultural homogeneity and the effects of culture, particularly that of film consumption, on citizens or local audiences. Although cultural industries have become one of the most dynamic emerging sectors in world trade studies, many developing countries have not given fair attention to their film industries due to the priority given to other sectors. …

Planning document for the future of Heartbeat. Proposes that Heartbeat create an alliance with one or more universities to continue its work. A second scenario proposes a more active role for Saunders, who does not want to retire. Saunders would teach future leaders in small seminars and have an assistant to help him recast his past work in today's language …

Not Seeing The Joke: The Overlooked Role Of Humour In Researching Television Production, Edward Brennan Jan 2011

Not Seeing The Joke: The Overlooked Role Of Humour In Researching Television Production, Edward Brennan

Articles

This article argues that humour can provide researchers with a unique access point into the professional cultures of media producers. By reconsidering an earlier case study, and reviewing relevant literature, it illustrates how humour can fulfil several functions in media production. Importantly, humour is a central means of performing the ‘emotional labour’ that increasingly precarious media work demands. For production research, the everyday joking and banter of media workers can provide an important and, heretofore, overlooked means of accessing culture, meaning, consensus and conflict in media organizations. The article argues that humour’s organizational role should be considered as a sensitizing …

The Last Two Years Of David Brachman: The Case For Slow Cinema As A Microbudget Production Model, Marcos Casilli Jan 2011

The Last Two Years Of David Brachman: The Case For Slow Cinema As A Microbudget Production Model, Marcos Casilli

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Last Two Years of David Brachman is a feature-length digital film directed, written and produced by Marcos Casilli in pursuit of the Master of Fine Arts in Film & Digital Media from the University of Central Florida. This is a very personal film that presents a sometimes-humorous approach to the following question: what makes life worth living? The film was made on what is categorized as a microbudget, but following the studio production model for the most part. This thesis presents a critique of that combination, advocating for a "slow cinema" model instead.

When Predator Becomes Prey: The Gendered Jargon Of Popular Culture, Melissa R. Ames Jan 2011

When Predator Becomes Prey: The Gendered Jargon Of Popular Culture, Melissa R. Ames

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

Throughout the first decade of the twenty-first century the vernacular of popular culture has been bombarded by sexualized terminology. Although these terms are often formed with humorous intent, their staying power and use as cultural descriptive categories is both intriguing and disturbing. Also troubling is the fact that the majority of these new terms, such as puma (a thirty-something female “dating” a younger male), cougar (a forty-plus female “dating” a younger male), and MILF (“mother I’d like to fuck”), are restricted to the female gender alone. This article analyzes the etymology of these terms, their use in popular culture (ranging …

The Ister: Between The Documentary And Heidegger’S Lecture Course Politics, Geographies, And Rivers, Babette Babich Jan 2011

The Ister: Between The Documentary And Heidegger’S Lecture Course Politics, Geographies, And Rivers, Babette Babich

Articles and Chapters in Academic Book Collections

The Ister, the 2004 documentary by the Australian scholars and videographers, David Barison, a political theorist, and Daniel Ross, a philosopher, appeals to Martin Heidegger’s 1942 lecture course, Hölderlins Hymne «Der Ister»and the video takes us «backward» as the river flows: beginning from the Danube’s delta where it ends in the sea and «journeying» with it to its source in the Alps.

the value of the Barison/Ross documentary for both political theory and philosophy is its illustration of the technological incursions or assaults on the river itself, that is to say: its representation of the ‘uses’ and hence …

Love Through A Wide-Angle Lens: A Mythic Narrative And Feminist Critique Of The Reality Competition Dating Show More To Love, Amy Leann Zsohar

More to Love was the first reality competition dating show to afford fat women a chance at reality show love. The purpose of the study was to look at how fat women are portrayed on reality competition dating shows. The purpose of this study is to understand how the mythic narrative of love through a feminist lens informed by LeBesco, Bordo, Hill Collins, and hooks are in conversation with each other in More to Love. From American Bandstand To Total Request Live: Teen Culture And Identity On Music Television, Kaylyn Toale Jan 2011

From American Bandstand To Total Request Live: Teen Culture And Identity On Music Television, Kaylyn Toale

American Studies Senior Theses

Because television succeeds or fails based on its ability to attract an audience large enough to entice advertisers, this project will operate under the assumption that popular television conveys some important cultural attributes of both its creators and its audience. American Bandstand and Total Request Live (TRL) each presented the most popular music of the day in ways that drew massive audiences from America’s youth, between 1952-1989 (Bandstand) and 1998-2008 (TRL.) I will treat these and related shows as venues through which to view American youth culture. The music itself adds an exciting component to the project: as music changed, …

Download This: Artist Development And Interconnectivity In The Internet Age, Geoffrey Johnson Jan 2011

Download This: Artist Development And Interconnectivity In The Internet Age, Geoffrey Johnson

American Studies Senior Theses

The advent of internet media distribution has profoundly changed the way most people consume music and experience artists. Outlets such as Myspace, YouTube, Twitter, and peer-to-peer downloading networks have made music and artists more accessible than ever before. These changes have come largely at the expense of the traditional music industry model of distribution. My thesis proposes that these new media have radically redefined what it means to be a developing artist. Specifically, these media empower artists with the ability to circumvent music industry oversight while providing them with tools of self-promotion to autonomously construct a fan-base. My thesis will …
