Chaotic Angel, Nicole R. Pramik

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Chaotic Angel is a sci-fi/action screenplay that speculates the existence of persons with literal dual natures. Such people are called Doppelgangers – two selves, one person, opposite equals both vying for control. The film’s story focuses on Seraphina Striker, a vigilante, who battles her own personal dark side. Seraphina surrenders to her darker nature when Godric Raven, a notorious gangster, hires her as his personal hitman. But when Seraphina refuses to kill, she partners with a federal agent to hunt Godric down. But every step towards Godric is drenched in deceit; soon even trusted government figures are no longer be …

This Time He Moves! The Deeper Significance Of Hou Hsiao-Hsien's Radical Break In Good Men, Good Women, James N. Udden

Interdisciplinary Studies Faculty Publications

Following the recent success of Taiwanese film directors, such as Hou Hsiao-hsien, Edward Yang, Ang Lee and Tsai Ming-liang, Taiwanese film is raising its profile in contemporary cinema. This collection presents an exciting and ambitious foray into the cultural politics of contemporary Taiwan film that goes beyond the auterist mode, the nation-state argument and vestiges of the New Cinema.

Cinema Taiwan considers the complex problems of popularity, conflicts between transnational capital and local practice, non-fiction and independent filmmaking as emerging modes of address, and new possibilities of forging vibrant film cultures embedded in national (identity) politics, gender/sexuality and community activism. …

The characters are: Flor, Juan Carlos, Julia, Lupe, Isabelle, Dorothy, and Jenna. The script tells how low income families live and have to support for their families. The Immediacy Of Narrated Combat: Operation Iraqi Freedom As Public Spectacle, Jason Mcentee Jan 2007

The Immediacy Of Narrated Combat: Operation Iraqi Freedom As Public Spectacle, Jason Mcentee

English Faculty Publications

From the Vietnam War to Operation Desert Storm to Operation Iraqi Freedom, Americans have seen a dramatic shift in the ways they see combat - countless, and often dubious, images certainly impact how they interpret their warriors' actions. Iraqi Freedom presents an interesting shift in the immediate availability of numerous fiction and non-fiction narratives often stemming from the accounts of the soldiers themselves. I refer to this shift as the immediacy of narrated combat. Iraqi Freedom, unlike Vietnam and Desert Storm, has seen an almost immediate response in terms of the narratives we see and read, including movies, television programs, …

Another Look At Gender In Prime-Time Television, Jan Carolyn Kircher Jan 2007

Another Look At Gender In Prime-Time Television, Jan Carolyn Kircher

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Television has become an important agent of socialization in society today. Social interaction on prime-time television was examined 24 years ago by members of the Sociology Department at South Dakota State University. That study was similar to this research project that investigates gender roles on prime-time television. The earlier study used a modified version of the Bales Interaction Scale to code male and female behavior to assess the extent to which prime-time television presented traditional or nontraditional gender roles. This study used research methods similar to those of the previous study to see if traditional gender roles depicted on prime-time …

The Way We Live Now: Carlos Saura's Deprisa, Deprisa And The Documentary Mode, Julie Jones Jan 2007

The Way We Live Now: Carlos Saura's Deprisa, Deprisa And The Documentary Mode, Julie Jones

Foreign Languages Faculty Publications

The author explores the use of documentary film techniques in Carlos Saura's "Deprisa, deprisa," or "Hurry, Hurry." The movie was made in Spain in 1980 during a period of rising crime and was part of a genre of films that depicted "cops and robbers." The movie features young people in the outskirts of Madrid who felt it was easier to steal things than work for them. The author explores the historical context of the movie's time period and analyzes the effect of Spain's political uncertainty after Franco's death.

Producing A Short Film, John Wiedenheft Jan 2007

Producing A Short Film, John Wiedenheft

Honors Program Theses

One reason is that the project provides a creative outlet for all of the different skills and knowledge learned through my Electronic Media and Film Studies courses. Such learned skills include the process of adapting a previously written short story into a screenplay, directing actors and a production crew through the various stages of producing a short film, and researching various modes of film distribution. A large portion of my Film Studies minor incorporates theory on the aesthetics of filmmaking, i.e. how storytelling in film is different from poetry or novels. My project will elucidate some of those aesthetics, such …

The Body Of The Terrorist In Contemporary Cinema, Robert Duggan, Páraic Finnerty Jan 2007

The Body Of The Terrorist In Contemporary Cinema, Robert Duggan, Páraic Finnerty

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

This article will explore the presentation of the body of the terrorist in a range of British and American films with a particular emphasis on how these films combine political and romantic plotlines. As part of a broad consideration of how the terrorist is presented, this essay will concentrate in particular on Cal (1984), The Crying Game (1992), The Dancer Upstairs (2002) and The Quiet American (2002). Rather than fully engage with the more complex discourse of politics, often these films ask audiences to conceptualize the transgressive figure of the terrorist through the very familiar vocabulary of love and sexual …

中国大陆九十年代以来独立电影文化的构成与城市青年文化实践, Xiaodao Liang Jan 2007

中国大陆九十年代以来独立电影文化的构成与城市青年文化实践, Xiaodao Liang

Lingnan Theses

Locating The Bard: Adaptation And Authority In Michael Radford's The Merchant Of Venice Jan 2007

Locating The Bard: Adaptation And Authority In Michael Radford's The Merchant Of Venice

Faculty Publications

Michael Radford’s adaptation of The Merchant of Venice (2004) starring Al Pacino and Jeremy Irons returns feature film Shakespeare to period setting and costuming after roughly a decade of radicalized adaptative strategies such as those of Baz Luhrmann, Michael Almereyda, and Julie Taymor, strategies that threatened to overshadow the Kenneth Branagh approach to Shakespeare’s textual and cultural authority. Radford underscores this return to “authentic” Shakespeare with a heavy directorial hand that begins the film with superimposed text recounting the sixteenth-century Venetian context of the original play setting. The watery landscape of Venice, the brothels and courtesans that entertain the Christian …

Engaging The Eighties: Ethics, Objects, Periods, Kevin L. Ferguson Jan 2007

Engaging The Eighties: Ethics, Objects, Periods, Kevin L. Ferguson

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation examines a recent decade in American history whose unique notion of self-periodization generated important questions of ethical engagement and withdrawal. Situated during a time of an increasingly complex relationship between literature and theory, thinkers in the 80s self-consciously shifted towards making claims about their present moment which were based on the logic of rupture, and which thus created an either-or logic of pessimism or optimism in response to this rupture. These kinds of self-periodizing notions generally are collected under the rubric "postmodernism" and the first chapter deals with a transatlantic movement between theorists such as Fredric Jameson and …

Bomb Media 1951-1964, Tristan Edward Abbott Jan 2007

Bomb Media 1951-1964, Tristan Edward Abbott

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This thesis looks at nuclear films, commercial and governmental, that were released between 1951 and 1964. Special attention is paid to the recursivity that existed between the propagandic, often outrageously inaccurate Civil Defense films made by the United States government and the subversive popular films made by visionary dissidents.

The films are divided into three periods. The earliest period focuses on Samuel Fuller's Pickup on South Street and the Robert Aldrich 's Kiss Me Deadly (based on the novel by Mickey Spillane), along with some of the earliest Civil Defense films. Special attention is paid to the politically minded creation …

Lawrence Baron. Projecting The Holocaust Into The Present: The Changing Focus Of Contemporary Holocaust Cinema (Book Review), Kathrin M. Bower Jan 2007

Lawrence Baron. Projecting The Holocaust Into The Present: The Changing Focus Of Contemporary Holocaust Cinema (Book Review), Kathrin M. Bower

Languages, Literatures, and Cultures Faculty Publications

Projecting the Holocaust is a valuable addition to extant scholarship on Holocaust cinema and offers a refreshingly inclusive and positive take on how feature films contribute to our understanding of history. In contrast to other surveys of Holocaust cinema, Baron includes films that focus on stories of perpetrators, non-Jewish victims, the experiences of the second generation, and neo-Nazi groups. This inclusivity is also evident in Baron's position that the Holocaust is not the property of specific countries or peoples and that its representation speaks to universal concerns about human civilization as well as to particular questions about national identities.

God's Lonely Men : Bernard Herrmann's Musical Voice For The Lonely And Tortured Men Of Cinema, Clare Nina Norelli Jan 2007

God's Lonely Men : Bernard Herrmann's Musical Voice For The Lonely And Tortured Men Of Cinema, Clare Nina Norelli

Theses : Honours

Bernard Herrmann (1911-1975) has long been regarded as one of the most important composers of film music. Emerging during a time when the majority of film scores worked primarily with the physical action onscreen or what was immediately obvious in the dramatic narrative, Herrmann's innovative compositional style instead focused on the unconscious and the psychological states at work. The following thesis is a discussion of the key elements of Herrmann's unique film score style and, via case studies of the three lonely male protagonists in the films Citizen Kane (Welles, USA, 1941), Vertigo (Hitchcock, USA, 1958) and Taxi Driver (Scorsese, …

Cinematography And Choreography: "It Takes Two To Tango", Laura Boynes Jan 2007

Cinematography And Choreography: "It Takes Two To Tango", Laura Boynes

Theses : Honours

As a practicing dancer and choreographer with a developing interest in film, the lifelong struggle (where many have gone before) to capture and accurately depict choreography on screen, intrigues me.

Who should dance the camera or the choreography? These are questions that have been pondered by choreographers and theorists for centuries, with pioneers such as Busby Berkeley and Maya Deren each finding their own answers to success.

This thesis discusses the creation and production of dance film, and the importance of movement in front of and behind the camera lens. I believe experimentation and research are the most effective methods …

No Law: Deadwood And The State, Mark L. Berrettini Jan 2007

No Law: Deadwood And The State, Mark L. Berrettini

School of Film Faculty Publications and Presentations

Deadwood's final episode of season 3 opens with a monologue from theater operator Jack Langrishe (Brian Cox), a relative newcomer to the camp of Deadwood. Shown in a wide shot that spotlights him on the dark stage of his nascent theater, Langrishe ostensibly speaks to one of his companions, the actress Claudia (Cynthia Ettinger), shown in one medium reverse-shot. Yet Langrishe also speaks and performs beyond the theater to the residents of Deadwood and to the program's viewers extradiagetically as he sums up the tense state of affairs within the camp: This camp is in mortal danger. The man Hearst …
