Cool Moms & Cool Media: Returning To, Morgan Wallace
Cool Moms & Cool Media: Returning To, Morgan Wallace
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
I posit that contemporary fears about the effect electronic media has on us and our children is anything but new. Therefore, reminiscing about the "good ole days" and wanting to go back would not actually solve the problem. However, looking back to a time when there was also anxiety about electronic media and the shifting field of public and private may reveal new possibilities for relating to and with these media. Rather than flatly blame media as an apparently new cause of harm, it is essential to reveal media's historical and political conditions, only in this way can we better …
Eliminating The Uncertainty Of Hong Kong In 1990s: Tsui Hark’S Once Upon A Time In China (1, 2, 3), Zhanwen Peng
Eliminating The Uncertainty Of Hong Kong In 1990s: Tsui Hark’S Once Upon A Time In China (1, 2, 3), Zhanwen Peng
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
My argument is that the Wong Fei-hung film series, Once Upon a Time in China (Tsui Hark, Chapters 1, 2, 3), not only affirms the ideas of Confucianism but also criticizes them. Tsui Hark’s film series express Hong Kong’s tension of selecting eastern tradition and western modernity before it returned to mainland China in 1997, which represents the selection of entirely different values between East and West. Though the film series was made from 1991 to 1993, Hark started considering how to eliminate the uncertainty in selecting ideology after Hong Kong’s return. He provides his answer by combining eastern Confucianism …
The Revival Western And, Kevin Thomas Mckenna
The Revival Western And, Kevin Thomas Mckenna
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
I create a dialogue between films credited with reviving the Western film genre in the early 1990’s. I examine spatial representations in a group of films I label “the revival westerns”: Kevin Costner’s Dances with Wolves (1990), Clint Eastwood’s Unforgiven (1992), and George P. Cosmatos’ Tombstone (1993). Through the use of extreme long shots, characters demonstrating a confined sense of place, and continuity editing, the revival westerns erect a concentrically scaled conception of space and place and maintain a linear temporality. However, I offer Jim Jarmusch’s Dead Man (1995) as an intervention that reassembles these spatial and temporal notions. Dead …
Failing To Move Forward: Journalism, Media, And Affect In David Fincher's, Nicholas Orlando
Failing To Move Forward: Journalism, Media, And Affect In David Fincher's, Nicholas Orlando
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Zodiac (David Fincher, 2007) offers a critique of the mass media’s efforts to restore American valiance with heroic narratives of ordinary people in the aftermath of 9/11. Amending prior scholarly readings of Zodiac as a serial killer narrative, I reconfigure my analysis by taking Fincher at his word and treating it as a journalism film. Borrowing a term from political theorist Elisabeth Anker, I argue that, unlike other contemporary journalism films, Zodiac is constructed as a “melodrama of failure” that, rather than seeking mastery, unveils the instability of evidence and the obsessive uncertainty of procedure.
With his film sitting between …

Concerning Virtual Reality And Corporealized Media: Exploring Video Game Aesthetics And Phenomenology, Matthew Morales
Concerning Virtual Reality And Corporealized Media: Exploring Video Game Aesthetics And Phenomenology, Matthew Morales
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Since the birth of the New Hollywood blockbuster out of the Hollywood Renaissance in the 1970s, popular moving image media has continually exhibited an intense interest in play with Newtonian physics and tactile, immediate experience. As the entertainment industry has moved further away from analog and celluloid and deeper into a digital media space, we have begun to see new a new breed of media project that differently engages with our sensorium in order to newly use (and abuse) this interest. I term this digital media project “corporealized media.” Corporealized media, as I define it, refers to media that includes, …
El Arte De "Lágrimas En La Lluvia", Todd K. Mack
El Arte De "Lágrimas En La Lluvia", Todd K. Mack
Alambique.

"There's A Real Hole Here": Female Masochism And Spectatorship In Michael Haneke's La Pianiste, Morgan J. Jennings
"There's A Real Hole Here": Female Masochism And Spectatorship In Michael Haneke's La Pianiste, Morgan J. Jennings
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In this project, I examine the relationship between female masochism, performance, and spectatorship in Michael Haneke’s film La Pianiste (2001). The film stages a relationship to sexuality that structures the subject’s excruciating negotiations with the other as always mediated by the law, the letter, or the body as instrument, which is allegorized by the protagonist’s occupation as a piano teacher. In my analysis, I identify the ways in which the film paradoxically offers a critique of mediation’s effect on the feminine position while encouraging viewers to confront the possibility that desire is only possible through these mediations. Contributing to feminist …

This is a review of Göran Olsson’s Concerning Violence - Nine Scenes From the Anti-imperialistic Self-Defense (2014) - an unusual documentary, which, formally and thematically, probes the complex relationship between image, voice and history.
The Dislocated Spectator's Relationship To Enchanted Objects In Early Film And Modernist Poetry, Rachel Christine Ekblad
The Dislocated Spectator's Relationship To Enchanted Objects In Early Film And Modernist Poetry, Rachel Christine Ekblad
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In the early 1900s, industry and new technologies dislocated our sense of selfhood. Since the Industrial Revolution, the world had become increasingly crammed with material objects, leading up to when the invention of radio and the rise of electricity perpetuated and evidenced an interest in the immaterial. A similar fascination with magic as expressed in cultural forms such as the traveling show and the séance pointed to our new relationship to the object world: the self, dislocated from the body, could relocate in objects, forming a circuitous relationship akin to electricity. This phenomenon is encapsulated by the representation of enchanted …

"You Want It All To Happen Now!": The Jinx, The Imposter, And Re-Enacting The Digital Thriller In True Crime Documentaries, Brett Michael Phillips
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In this thesis, I outline the changing shape of the reenactment in the contemporary true crime documentary to illustrate a burgeoning crisis of epistemology and anxieties about the authority of evidence in the Digital Age. I examine two works—The Jinx and The Imposter—that deal with evidence in formally similar but ideologically opposite ways.
Logic in the Digital Age prioritizes an ever-widening collection of increasingly more precise artifacts and details, which supposedly paint a more complete picture but end up highlighting what is unknown more often. Key to this examination is the adoption of classic Hollywood thriller techniques (e.g., non-traditional narrative …
Playing-With The World: Toy Story's Aesthetics And Metaphysics Of Play, Jonathan Hendricks
Playing-With The World: Toy Story's Aesthetics And Metaphysics Of Play, Jonathan Hendricks
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Pixar’s Toy Story (John Lassiter, 1995) is not just a story about toys and the children that play with them, but a demonstration of how we interact with the world. This thesis looks at the way in which both main children, Andy and Sid, interact with their toys and how this interaction is one that is structured by way of what Martin Heidegger calls “Enframing.” In this modality of playing, toys and other things and entities in the world, and the world itself, appear to the children as on-hand resources for use at any time and can be molded, as …
Televisual Subjectivities In Pepe Rojo’S Speculative Fiction From Mexico: 1996-2003, Stephen C. Tobin
Televisual Subjectivities In Pepe Rojo’S Speculative Fiction From Mexico: 1996-2003, Stephen C. Tobin
Alambique. Revista académica de ciencia ficción y fantasía / Jornal acadêmico de ficção científica e fantasía
Pepe Rojo, a key author often tied to the Mexican cyberpunk movement of the 1990s, has been most effective in articulating a kind of visual dystopia in the country that focuses upon television as a key site for constructing dislocated subjectivities. His writing reacts to larger shifts occurring in the country’s field of vision that have been catalyzed by the neoliberal political-economic policy changes and have altered the way in which the mass media culture industry in Mexico functioned in the 1990s. This brought a multitude of changes in how the media industry functioned both internally and externally, ultimately becoming …
Intenciones Enmascaradas En La Pantalla Plateada. El Santo Y El Mimetismo Imperial, David S. Dalton
Intenciones Enmascaradas En La Pantalla Plateada. El Santo Y El Mimetismo Imperial, David S. Dalton
Alambique.
Heavy South: Identity, Performance, And Heavy Music In The Southern Metal Scene, Michael A. Mcdowell
Heavy South: Identity, Performance, And Heavy Music In The Southern Metal Scene, Michael A. Mcdowell
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The Southern Metal scene depends heavily on the performance of a Southern Identity. While considerable research has been done on other musical genres and scenes from the American South (country music, blues, gospel music), less attention has been given to the extreme metal scene of Southern Metal. Using scholarship of Nadine Hubbs, Philip Auslander, Jefferey C. Alexander, and Keith Kahn Harris, among others, I analyze two films, Slow Southern Steel (2010) and NOLA: Life, Death, and Heavy Blues from the Bayou (2014), and one song, Down’s “Eyes of the South” as cultural productions of this Southern Metal scene. In …
Digital Integration, Jacob C. Boccio
Digital Integration, Jacob C. Boccio
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Artificial intelligence is an emerging technology; something far beyond smartphones, cloud integration, or surgical microchip implantation. Utilizing the work of Ray Kurzweil, Nick Bostrom, and Steven Shaviro, this thesis investigates technology and artificial intelligence through the lens of the cinema. It does this by mapping contemporary concepts and the imagined worlds in film as an intersection of reality and fiction that examines issues of individual identity and alienation. I look at a non-linear timeline of films involving machine advancement, machine intelligence, and stages of post-human development; Elysium (2013) and Surrogates (2009) are about technology as an extension of the self, …

To Utopianize The Mundane: Sound And Image In Country Musicals, Siyuan Ma
To Utopianize The Mundane: Sound And Image In Country Musicals, Siyuan Ma
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Many consider music, songs, and dance performance as utopian signifiers for cinema, but few has entered the utopian discourse of country musicals, a small genre of cinema usually known as country music films. By closely scrutinizing Pure Country (1992), this thesis aims to reveal how country music—as music numbers and as background cues— integrate and connect the fragmented on-screen world for the country musicals so as to offer audiences a fullness of utopian experience, and how this utopian effect are culturally significant for American audiences due to country music’s unique mechanism of constructing utopia and nostalgia in its past-orientations, sentimentalities, …
Now, We Hear Through A Voice Darkly: New Media And Narratology In Cinematic Art, James Anthony Ricci
Now, We Hear Through A Voice Darkly: New Media And Narratology In Cinematic Art, James Anthony Ricci
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation explores the intersection of new media and narrative, as it is presented through a cinematic aesthetic. The narrative language of film is analyzed through the theoretical framework of Bakhtin’s concepts of Heteroglossia, Chronotope, and Dialogism. Bakhtin’s ideas of classifying language act as strong tools for demonstrating how cinematic narrative can inform and alter the perception of its spectators. Lev Manovich’s principles of New Media, specifically Variability, Modularity, and Automation are also utilized to demonstrate how cinema is a constantly evolving paradigm.
Chapter one focuses on the theoretical terminology, outlining the conceptual definitions and illustrating their relevance in precise …

Genre, Justice & Quentin Tarantino, Eric Michael Blake
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The films of Quentin Tarantino have held a significant influence on modern cinema, and therefore on cinema studies. As such, studies on the social and philosophical implications of his work have appeared over the years, mostly in regards to content. However, with the exception of references to his use of cinematic violence, studies of his technique—i.e., his cinematic style—have been rare, and rarer still have been studies of the social implications that arise from the patterns of his style as well as those his subject matter.
The following thesis seeks to use the concept of Auteur Theory—specifically, that Tarantino …
He_Rtland: The Violence Of Neoliberalism, Hector Sotomayor
He_Rtland: The Violence Of Neoliberalism, Hector Sotomayor
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Perhaps, under the consciousness of today, “neoliberalism” has defined our world during the previous and current centuries more than any other socioeconomic system. But the evolution of this ideology, which initially aimed to enhance, or rather, reinvent capitalism and individual freedom, has, in essence, induced an unrecognized problem. I argue that neoliberalism is the catalyst for much of the hostility in this globalized society where tensions and poverty are casualties of individual and corporate prosperity. Because of this revelation, I argue that neoliberalism inadvertently instills violence that is both unseen and gendered. In order to formulate my argument, I introduce …

On The Convergence Of Cinema And Theme Parks: Developing A Predictable Model For Creative Design, Ryan Luke Terry
On The Convergence Of Cinema And Theme Parks: Developing A Predictable Model For Creative Design, Ryan Luke Terry
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The goal of this research study is to develop a model of information that will enable media conglomerates and other companies, with theme park investments, to make informed and effective decisions based on scholarly and empirical evidences. In order to do this, the following research study uses historic, scholarly, journalistic, and focus group evidences to consolidate the information necessary to create a model to support concepts and designs. The paper begins with establishing why it is important for media conglomerates, with theme park investments, to integrate cinema into the park’s design. Then it looks back through the history of cinema …
Abjection, Telesthesia, And Transnationalism: Incest In Park Chan-Wook's Oldboy, Daniel L. Holland
Abjection, Telesthesia, And Transnationalism: Incest In Park Chan-Wook's Oldboy, Daniel L. Holland
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Many consider Oldboy be the defining film of the most recent wave of South Korean cinema, with scholars such as Terrence McSweeney and Kim Kyun Hyun arguing the film's representation of South Korean culture through collective memory, trauma, and Westernization. However, most of the current scholarship that surrounds the film does not adequately address the film's prominent theme of incest. My thesis explores the anxious implications of the film's incestuous imagery and reads it as a figure for the film's transnational presence. Specifically, in my project, incest is the nucleus on which I build each argument outward. First through abjection …
Auteurs At An Urban Crossroads: A Certain Tendency In New York Cinema, Rene Thomas Rodriguez
Auteurs At An Urban Crossroads: A Certain Tendency In New York Cinema, Rene Thomas Rodriguez
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Perhaps more than any other major American city in the 1970s, New York represented the decline of an urban existence. Job loss from factors related to deindustrialization and intense crime occupied local and national news, reflecting the increasing anxiety of America's future. New York City was positioned at the center of this frightening chaos. Films made during this period, known by film scholars and journalists as the "New Hollywood" captured the collective temperament of the people and the physical space they inhabit during its disintegration. The depiction of New York during the 1970s has been widely discussed in the writing …

Representations Of Gatsby: Ninety Years Of Retrospective, Christine Anne Auger
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Jay Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald’s most famous character, has starred in a variety of stage and screen adaptations in the ninety years since he was first introduced in The Great Gatsby (1925). This dissertation explores the Gatsby character as depicted in six important adaptations of the novel, including two Broadway productions, Owen Davis’ 1926 drama and John Collins’ 2010s play, Gatz, and four major motion pictures: Herbert Brenon’s 1926 lost silent film (starring Warner Baxter); Elliott Nugent’s 1949 black and white film (starring Alan Ladd); Jack Clayton’s 1974 color film (starring Robert Redford); and Baz Luhrmann’s 2013 3-D film (starring …
The Birth Of A Nation: The Case For A Tri-Level Analysis Of Forms Of Racial Vindication, Charles Fred Hearns
The Birth Of A Nation: The Case For A Tri-Level Analysis Of Forms Of Racial Vindication, Charles Fred Hearns
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Early American film scholars often critique the relative ineffectiveness of a single literary work, protest movement or silent film to achieve racial vindication following the release of The Birth of a Nation in 1915. Thomas Cripps, for example, examines a relatively ineffective isolated attempt to counter the notions of White supremacy promoted in the film. This study makes the case for applying a non-traditional tri-level analysis when measuring the effectiveness of such attempts. The paper focuses on efforts to redeem the image and the potential of African Americans after 1915 in the Black public sphere in three concurrent vehicles: the …
