Feature Films For Communication Courses: A Bibliography, Russell F. Proctor Ii, Scott D. Johnson

Once upon a time, the only way to answer the question was informally; that is, by offering an opinion or directing the inquirer to someone who had experience in the area. Recently, however, the process has been formalized and expanded through various written materials. Rather than keeping lists of films in our heads, we can now refer people to articles, textbooks, and documents. The new trick is remembering the references for these works in circulation. This article is an attempt to remedy that problem. We offer here a list of resources for those who want ideas for using feature films …

Seduction, Control, & The Search For Authenticity: Madonna's Truth Or Dare, E. Deidre Pribram Ph.D. Jan 1993

Seduction, Control, & The Search For Authenticity: Madonna's Truth Or Dare, E. Deidre Pribram Ph.D.

Communications: Faculty Publications

Maddonnas' 1991 film Truth or Dare, based on her 1990 “Blond Ambition” tour—itself a combination of pop music and performance art— defies easy categorization. It is a “docudrama” of sorts: part documentary, part concert film, part dramatic enactment. By combining various filmic styles and traditions. Truth or Dare recreates certain long-standing cultural dichotomies between, for instance, onstage and offstage, public and private, reality and appearance, or truth and artifice. The film replicates such oppositions only to then question their continuing validity. Binary distinctions in Truth or Dare prove more apparent than real, more fleeting than differentiating. Ultimately, I believe, …

Female Spectators (14.1), E. Deidre Pribram Ph.D. Jan 1993

Female Spectators (14.1), E. Deidre Pribram Ph.D.

Communications: Faculty Publications

This introduction to Female Spectators gives a concise account of the major feminist debates in film studies and argues for more work to be done in incorporating filmmaking practice, spectatorship and textual analysis. All the contributors to this book share a concern to emphasis women’s presence in, rather than absence from, the “cinematic experience”

The Garifuna Journey Study Guide, Andrea E. Leland, Kathy Berger

Documentary Study Guides

Garifuna tradition bearers, artists, and technicians collaborated with filmmakers Andrea E. Leland and Kathy Berger to produce The Garifuna Journey, a documentary focused on the story of resistance and continuity of culture. The National Garifuna Council of Belize also worked on the project with the goal of cultural retrieval, as little had been documented and collected for its own archives.

With direction from tradition bearers in Belize, video footage and audio taped oral histories were collected, transcribed, and returned to the Belize community. The documentary was produced from these materials, focused on the Garifuna experience in Belize.

Media Images Of Boston's Black Community, Kirk A. Johnson Mar 1990

Media Images Of Boston's Black Community, Kirk A. Johnson

Trotter Review

In their efforts to report on the forces that affect Boston's racial climate, the local media have typically focused on the more obvious institutional actors: businesses, city hall, school boards, churches, the courts, neighborhood groups. Rarely have the media themselves been subjected to the same scrutiny. This study represents one such effort. It is an analysis of the images of Boston's black community that are conveyed through the local news media. It asks the question: If a Bostonian relied solely on the local news for information about local blacks, what impressions would he or she be left with, and how …

Reel Blacks: A Kinder, Gentler Fbi, Patricia A. Turner

Trotter Review

Revisionist interpretations of the Federal Bureau of Investigation's (FBI) role in enforcing civil rights legislation and its monitoring of black activists have proliferated during the last decade. Agents of Repression: The FBI's Secret Wars Against the Black Panther Party and the American Indian Movement by Ward Churchill and Jim Vander Wall, Racial Matters by Kenneth O'Reilly, and The FBI and Martin Luther King, Jr. by David Garrow are just a few of the numerous books to chronicle the FBI's somewhat embarrassing record on race-related issues. Given this wealth of documentation in print, it is even more startling that in the …

Tainted Glory: Truth And Fiction In Contemporary Hollywood, Patricia A. Turner Mar 1990

Tainted Glory: Truth And Fiction In Contemporary Hollywood, Patricia A. Turner

Trotter Review

In the earliest days of cinema, the image of the African American on screen matched the off-screen image. When a 12-minute version of Uncle Tom's Cabin (1903) was filmed, "Tom" shows were the most popular stage shows, the Stowe novel was still a top-seller, and the notion that white southerners were the real victims of the peculiar institution was gaining increasing acceptance in academic circles. When D.W. Griffith's epic and revolutionary Birth of a Nation (1915) depicted a set of stock African-American movie characters — the subservient overweight domestic servant; the indifferent, coquettish mulatto; the savage, sexually driven buck; and …

Introduction, Wornie L. Reed Mar 1990

Introduction, Wornie L. Reed

Trotter Review

The mass media can be a positive or negative force in the struggle for racial progress. Unfortunately, the black community faces media that provide many negative influences. Consequently, there is a continuing need to address this issue.

In the articles in this issue of the Trotter Review we examine the current representation of blacks in the news media and representations of blacks in history through the entertainment media.

Consequences Of Racial Stereotyping, Wornie L. Reed Mar 1990

Consequences Of Racial Stereotyping, Wornie L. Reed

Trotter Review

What are the consequences of negative portrayals of blacks? As mentioned in the previous articles, the media help to provide definitions of social reality, of social situations. Attendant upon such definitions is an implicit action orientation, a recommendation as to action appropriate to the situation.

The media are a significant factor in the ongoing battle for racial progress. While some of the battles take place in official forums (i.e., governmental institutions), other battles take place in unofficial forums such as newspapers, television, radio, movies, books, and magazines. These should not be taken lightly; there is ample evidence that individuals act …

Media Images And Racial Stereotyping, Kirk A. Johnson Jun 1987

Media Images And Racial Stereotyping, Kirk A. Johnson

Trotter Review

To better understand how the local media portray Boston's black community, I monitored news reports from a sample of newspapers and radio and television stations for one month during the summer of 1986. I noted the roles blacks played, the activities blacks were shown to be engaged in, and the events that brought blacks into the news. By comparing the portrayal of blacks in Boston's major media with portrayals in the black media, I sought to understand the criteria that reporters and editors use to judge the newsworthiness of items relating to the black community, and to determine whether (and …

Animals In Film And Television, D. B. Wilkins Jan 1981

Animals In Film And Television, D. B. Wilkins

Sports and Entertainment Collection

People have always had a fascination for large, "exotic" types of animals and as a result many zoos were set up all over Europe and North America. For many years there was a great deal of money to be made from exhibiting animals, and very little regard was paid to their welfare.

With the advent of cinema and television we have come to appreciate these animals in their own environment. Some modern zoos have attempted, therefore, to reproduce a type of natural surrounding for the larger species of animal, but the compromise between providing an animal with its natural environment …

A Study Of Selected Walt Disney Screenplays And Films And The Stereotyping Of The Role Of The Female, Jerry P. Houseman Jan 1973

A Study Of Selected Walt Disney Screenplays And Films And The Stereotyping Of The Role Of The Female, Jerry P. Houseman

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Given this large involvement that children have with motion pictures, an educator is moved to inquire into the possible effects that movies might have upon them. It, therefore, seems appropriate that an educational dissertation be undertaken concentrating on Disney Production films, since as indicated by the foregoing, they are so universally viewed by American children.

Statement of the problem:

This study attempted to (1) analyze the five screenplays listed on page 6, (2) show two Disney films based on the screenplays analyzed to groups of children and administer a questionnaire to them. The investigator used the obtained data to determine …
