Maurice's Love, Peggy Wood Dec 2016

Maurice's Love, Peggy Wood

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

“By linking their love to the past he linked it to the present” (Forster 745).

E. M. Forster’s Maurice is a widely read and taught text that features homosexuality in Edwardian England. The focus of this thesis is an in-depth analysis of Maurice’s character, with a specific emphasis on the character’s coming out process. The coming out process is still a significant issue in today’s world. Hate crimes, ostracism, and many other negatives can be associated with the coming out process that is not entirely different from what Maurice Hall faced. This statement is easily supported by historical accounts and …

“I Can’T Relate”: Refusing Identification Demands In Teaching And Learning, Ian Barnard Jan 2016

“I Can’T Relate”: Refusing Identification Demands In Teaching And Learning, Ian Barnard

English Faculty Articles and Research

In literature, composition, and other areas of English Studies, relateability can be an important tool to inscribe marginalized subjects as academic citizens. However, its larger arc reproduces ethnocentric and individualistic ideologies at the national and personal levels that foreclose the true understanding of and engagement with Otherness that defines learning. What are the particular intellectual and other challenges, pleasures, and rewards of refusing the pedagogical imperative to engage and understand through identification? I conclude the article by deploying theorists of difference to ask what it means to understand difference as difference, how this understanding might be facilitated, and what the …

Creating Trans-Inclusive Schools: Introductory Activities That Enhance The Critical Consciousness Of Future Educators, Kris T. De Pedro, Christopher Jackson, Erin Campbell, Jade Gilley, Brock Ciarelli Jan 2016

Creating Trans-Inclusive Schools: Introductory Activities That Enhance The Critical Consciousness Of Future Educators, Kris T. De Pedro, Christopher Jackson, Erin Campbell, Jade Gilley, Brock Ciarelli

Communication Faculty Articles and Research

The Lawrence King murder and other tragedies surrounding transgender youth have prompted a national discussion about the need for schools to be more supportive and inclusive of transgender students. In this multi-authored reflection, the authors describe a series of three introductory activities in an undergraduate educational studies course aimed at cultivating critical consciousness about transgender students. The instructor and students discussed their viewing of televised interviews featuring transgender individuals and participated in a gallery walk and a role-playing activity. These activities cultivated students’ critical awareness of the experiences of transgender students and strategies for creating trans- inclusive classrooms and schools.

What Influences Opposition To Gay Marriage?, Nick Fernandes Dec 2014

What Influences Opposition To Gay Marriage?, Nick Fernandes

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

There has been a lot of discussion in news media about religious opposition to gay rights. To test these claims, I set out to compare religiosity (as defined by how frequently a given respondent attends religious services) with support for gay rights (in this case, defined as support for gay marriage or civil unions). I also sought to compare the effects of religious denomination on support for gay marriage. In comparing all these variables, I found that religiosity does have a strong impact on support for gay marriage. However, I found that religious denomination (with the exception of moderate Protestants …

Same-Sex Marriage And Religion: An Inappropriate Relationship, Brittney Baker Sep 2014

Same-Sex Marriage And Religion: An Inappropriate Relationship, Brittney Baker

e-Research: A Journal of Undergraduate Work

The debate over same-sex marriage has been a prominent issue in our society over many years now, appearing in several ballot initiatives such as California's Proposition 8. The idea of allowing two people of the same gender to enter into the institution of marriage has brought out drastic emotions and reactions from many different groups of people. Those who engage in the debate believe strongly in their convictions; the two loudest voices tend to come from the gay community and the religious community, the former arguing in favor of same-sex marriage and the latter against it. Religious groups, predominantly from …

Religious Views As A Predictor Of Vote Choice, Erienne Plotkin Sep 2014

Religious Views As A Predictor Of Vote Choice, Erienne Plotkin

e-Research: A Journal of Undergraduate Work

This is a study of the relationship between the religious beliefs of people in the United States and their voting patterns. It is also a comparison between such results and that of more traditional voting predictors such as economic status or education level of voters. In general, there has been an apparent separation of church and state. More common predictors of voting behavior that have been used in the past are traditional demographics such as education levels and economic status. Although these traditional predictors are often accurate, religious belief and churches may play a greater, if insufficiently recognized role in …

Empathy, Open-Mindedness, And Political Ideology: Conservative And Liberal Trends, Dani Cosme, Chrissy Pepino, Brandon Brown Sep 2014

Empathy, Open-Mindedness, And Political Ideology: Conservative And Liberal Trends, Dani Cosme, Chrissy Pepino, Brandon Brown

e-Research: A Journal of Undergraduate Work

This study hypothesizes that the religious variables will be superior to the predictive power of other demographic measures of the same population. This study will compare the results of religious questions to those of "To what economic class do you belong?" and "What is the highest level of education you have completed?" that are often used as reliable predictions of voting behavior.

Elite Leadership Of Opinion And The Public Polarization: The Same Sex Marriage Debate In The United States, Patricia Victorio Sep 2014

Elite Leadership Of Opinion And The Public Polarization: The Same Sex Marriage Debate In The United States, Patricia Victorio

e-Research: A Journal of Undergraduate Work

The California Supreme Court made a landmark decision with the court case In re Marriage Cases (2008), legalizing same sex marriage within the state, and overturning the California Defense of Marriage Act (Proposition 22). With a swift decision the supreme court put the controversial issue of same sex marriage back in the media spot light. Outside of California, states such as Arizona also reopened the debate of same sex marriage. The Arizona legislature put this issue up for a vote in the Fall 2008 election. The Arizona ballot measure, Proposition 102, wanted to define marriage between one man and one …

The Effects Of Proposition 8 In The Lgbt Rights Movement In Orange County, Maria Claudia Brena Sep 2014

The Effects Of Proposition 8 In The Lgbt Rights Movement In Orange County, Maria Claudia Brena

e-Research: A Journal of Undergraduate Work

Proposition 8 was a California ballot initiative that banned same-sex marriage in November of 2008. The issue of same-sex marriage is usually framed in the media as a political and cultural battle where the two opposing sides argue about the legal and cultural repercussions of the recognition of same-sex unions for same-sex relationships and society. Rather than focusing on the legal implications of the Proposition 8 campaign and its outcome, this paper addresses the campaign's effects in the LGBT Rights Movement in Orange County. During the campaign many LGBTs became politically active for the first time in their lives, but …

Transgender Patients: Communication Pearls For Pharmacists, Emmanuelle Schwartzmann, Thomas Kleyn

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

Understanding the unique communication needs of transgender patients is critical in order to minimize health disparities and patient barriers to care. Disciplining Queer, Ian Barnard Jan 2009

Disciplining Queer, Ian Barnard

English Faculty Articles and Research

This article analyzes a particular set of disciplinings by students and colleagues that coalesced around my teaching of a university course in ‘Queer Theory.’ I use these regulatory discourses and practices as a springboard to investigate how academic and other disciplines (English, in particular) enable and reproduce certain stylizations, epistemologies, and methodologies, and what they implicitly and violently conceal and demonize; how style functions as politics and what the politics of style are; how queerness—queer inquiry and intervention, queer methodologies and epistemologies, queer activisms and insubordinations—might activate, exacerbate, and expose some of these questions and mechanisms. The form of the …

The Racialization Of Sexuality: The Queer Case Of Jeffrey Dahmer, Ian Barnard Jan 2000

The Racialization Of Sexuality: The Queer Case Of Jeffrey Dahmer, Ian Barnard

English Faculty Books and Book Chapters

"In this article I read media and subcultural representations of Jeffrey Dahmer, the white male U.S. serial killer who gained notoriety in the late 1980s for having sex with and then murdering and dismembering men of color in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. My aim is to show the extent to which the degree of Dahmer's homosexualization in a particular representation determines Dahmer' s thinking and actions in the sphere of race, and to suggest how spiraling efforts to separate race from sexuality in the Dahmer case only further intricate the two analytic axes."

Joseph Conrad And The Ghost Of Oscar Wilde, Richard Ruppel Apr 1998

Joseph Conrad And The Ghost Of Oscar Wilde, Richard Ruppel

English Faculty Articles and Research

"Conrad walks a similar tight- rope in his exploration of the homosocial continuum--pushing out the boundaries a little and then pulling back to accommodate a conventional audience that would have been hostile to a more overt exploration. In other words, Conrad could only press his artistic investigations of the potential relationships between men so far because those investigations were threatened by the ghost of Oscar Wilde."

Antihomophobic Pedagogy: Some Suggestions For Teachers, Ian Barnard Jan 1994

Antihomophobic Pedagogy: Some Suggestions For Teachers, Ian Barnard

English Faculty Articles and Research

Too often as teachers we feel that we are doing the right thing by assigning our students "open-ended" essay topics or by inviting students to argue "both" sides of a controversial current event. The ideologies and institutions of liberal pluralism tell us that this is the way to promote "free speech," "democratic" argument, etc. But these kinds of topics and discussions have the effect of privileging dominant power relations and of further silencing our queer students. For example, if we ask our students to debate whether homosexuality is "wrong" or not, we are expecting our queer students to justify their …
