America is a land of immigrants, and the Ticino Swiss immigrants
share many of the characteristics found in other immigrant groups.
The first American immigrants were the English in the 17th century,
who founded the country. They were followed by the Scots-Irish from
Northern Ireland in the 18th century, and then in the half century after
America's Civil War, the years 1865 to 1920, masses of immigrants
came from all parts of Europe.

The Swiss have made many valuable contributions to the development
of the United States, including the westward expansion, and people
from Switzerland participated in some of the most significant events
and activities in the development of the American frontier. They were
involved in treks to the West, were found in many mining camps and in
pioneer settlements, and served in the US Army. Among the most celebrated
Swiss soldiers was Ernest Yeuve, from Neuchatel, who received
the Congressional Medal of Honor for driving off an Indian warrior in
1874 after brief hand-to-hand combat. His citation commended him for

This article offers a historiographical interpretation of an exceptionally rich personal archive; namely, fond Number 6: “Tŭrgovska kŭshta [Commercial Company] ‘Khristo P. Tŭpchileshtov’”, kept in Bŭlgarski istoricheski arkhiv (Bulgarian Historical Archive), Narodna Biblioteka (National Library) “Sv. Sv. Kiril i Metodiĭ” in Sofia. The analysis is organized around three issues: the biography of the archive’s founder; the acquisition of the archive by the National Library; and the ways the archival material has been interpreted in the Bulgarian historiography. Restoration and Ambiguity: The Male in Post-Wall German Film
As the programmatic, if diverse tenets of the Neuer Deutscher Film began to lose their hold on German film-making in the eighties, filmic narratives and cinematography emerged which on the one hand draw on this tradition, especially in seemingly postmodern narratives of subversion, minority and subjectivity, but on the other combine these with conventional, even restorative film language and narrative construction. Myths of gods, legends of battles, and folktales of magic abound in the heroic narratives of the Middle Ages. Mythology in the Middle Ages: Heroic Tales of Monsters, Magic, and Might describes how Medieval heroes were developed from a variety of source materials: Early pagan gods become euhemerized through a Christian lens, and an older epic heroic sensibility was exchanged for a Christian typological and figural representation of saints. Most startlingly, the faces of Christian martyrs were refracted through a heroic lens in the battles between Christian standard-bearers and their opponents, who were at times explicitly described in demonic terms. …

Reconciling The Controversy Of Animal Cruelty And The Shoah: A Look At Primo Levi's Compassionate Writings, Ilona Klein

Is it ethically admissible to compare the suffering of Jews during World War II to the general suffering of animals in the Western world? Who considers this parallel to be morally obscene, and who supports the comparison? Based on the historical evidence of Nazis insulting Jews with animal verbiage and herding them into the gas chambers of concentration camps, this study looks at a few textual examples by the Italian Jewish author Primo Levi, finding a conciliatory position in his poetry and prose.

This article contains the first four chapters of Arnold Bodtker' s autobiography. When preparing the autobiography for publication we decided that these chapters offered a significant piece of local history which deserved to be printed independently of the complete work. It tells a "coming of age" story that is an insightful and valuable contribution to the understanding of rural life in general, and Junction City, Oregon, in particular, from Arnold's birth in 1904 until his high school graduation in 1923.

Christian Hansen is a name known to many who are familiar with the original Danish colony of Danebod, in Tyler, in southwest Minnesota. Founded in 1886, the congregation now in 2011 celebrates its 125th anniversary year. Eventyrmanden-the Fairy Tale Man, as he was known, was associated with Danebod during the first fifty years of the settlement. During the research for my master's thesis in history at the University of Copenhagen, I was fortunate to be able to visit the Danish Immigrant Museum in Elk Hom, Iowa, and the Danish American Archive and Library in Blair, Nebraska. My quest was made possible by the Bodtker Grant from the Danish American Heritage Society, which I was lucky to receive. This article captures the essence of the purpose of my thesis: to examine the assimilation of four Danish women by using their private letters.
