The Friday, December 7, 1984, issue of the London Times Literary Supplement was devoted in good part to works about Switzerland and its unique literary and historical traditions. During the War of 1812, Swiss mercenaries were part of the British army which fought against the American forces. The most important figure among these soldiers in the service of the British Crown was undoubtedly Sir George Prevost, Governor-General and military commander of British North America from 1811-1815. He was a descendant of a prominent Geneva family, several members of which had attained high ranks in the British forces; Augustin Prevost, for example, Sir George's father became Major-General under General Wolfe. Augustin Prevost had also been a friend of Frederick Haldimand, Governor-General of Canada during the American Revolution.

For several months, five French-Swiss journalists travelled in other continents to meet and interview Swiss emigrants, to see how they lived and to explore their views on Switzerland and their emigration. Deliberately, the reporters chose countries far away from Europe, i.e. the United States, the Republic of South Africa, Singapore, Brazil, Argentina, and Australia. As their enterprise was not designed to be either scholarly or encyclopedic, the authors interweave impressions and information, historical facts and personal anecdotes. It presents the story of two intertwined lives, that of Amalia Thurkauf-Braun who was born in the 1880s and that of her son Ernst Albert, born in 1907 at Liestal, the capital of Canton Basel-Land, in Switzerland. The lives of Ernst's father Emil Thurkauf, in contrast, and of Ernst 's three siblings come only occasionally into view from the perspective of Amalia Thurkauf's reports or of her son's autobiographical reminiscences. My passion for travel, geography, history, railroads, maps, is inherited. Among the family papers on my father's side I found a little yellow book titled "Expenses during the travel in Italy" and dated 1799. Recently a major contribution to the field of knowledge of California's diverse population was published in Switzerland by Dr. Maurice-Edmond Perret, with the title Les Colonies Tessinoises en Californie.1 Unlike most studies of a similar nature, Perret had access to source materials in the Swiss archives as well as to those in California libraries.2 But he went further: he conducted his study by means of actual field investigation both in Switzerland and in California, and it is this which gives his work particular interest to historical geographers.

The topic of my paper is involved and multifaceted. It deals with well-known organizations and names such as the Rote Kapelle, Dulles and the OSS, Schellenberg, and the Abwehr, but it concentrates on the role that Switzerland played in the field of intelligence during World War II. Due to the volume of materials on almost every aspect of my topic it will not be possible to present more than an overview of the main themes and a glimpse at the issues that have challenged historians over the last forty years.

Under this heading I would like to bring together two different emphases in the study of industrialization that too often have remained separate: (a) the historical measurement of economic growth, undertaken by economic historians who have looked at industrial output and similar indicators in order to gauge a country's economic performance; and (b) the study of social policy measures such as workers' protection and social insurance, to which social and political historians have paid major attention in assessing a nation's reaction to the ups and downs of economic growth in the course of industrialization.

On June 18, 1983, more than forty persons from the United States and Switzerland met for the whole day at the Restaurant zur Aeusseren Enge in Bern.
